Hey, y'all-

Today the new Mac OS x Maverick was released. What do you think? Should I download it?

What are the differences between Maverick and Mountain Lion?

DEFINITELY download it -- also upgrade your iPhone and iPad to the NEW IOS 7.0.3 to take advantage of all of the features…

I'm only 1/2 way through with the download -- but time is NOT of the essence as I've been instructed to do the following…

After I download -- I need to launch an installer to put it on a thumb drive…

I need 2 separate back-ups of my current computer…

THEN -- I can install the new OS…

Seems a little silly -- but, oh well…

ENJOY IT!!!

FREE is GOOD!!! ..|

:):):)

^My partner is ALSO almost ready to replace his iMac…

I'm thinking that he MIGHT want the Mac Pro instead…

It seems like WAY MORE computer than you could POSSIBLY need -- yet, the base model is in the same price range as the iMac...

It's free. And Apple claims all OS X updates/new releases henceforth shall be free.

It is the influence of FOSS.

And it is not good news for Microsoft.

So am I now free to download it and install it on compatible, non-"mac" hardware?

^^ ^ Of course not. The EULA for OS X does not allow installation on anything other than Apple hardware. It never has, and never will. Moreover, Apple goes out of its way to try to insure that its software will not run on non-Apple hardware.

But an expectation is being established that operating systems (and perhaps software in general) should be free.

The revenue model is changing. Linux, Android, iOS, and now OS X are all free. The remaining holdout is Microsoft. At one time, 47% of profits at Microsoft came from the sale of Windows licenses. Today, that number is 25%, and falling.

I just upgraded - was painless, the thing I was concerned about was Microsoft Office for Mac (I need these for work since PC is used) seems no worries all works ok.
Now to discover all it will do.

MS prices however have significantly dropped for the consumer. Even Visual Studio is a steal at the moment. On the other hand, there is the new MS licencsing model for companies. It's called "CAL" and beyond fucked up ..

I noticed that. I think Microsoft is under pressure to keep consumer prices down.

All Linux software is free. iOS and Android apps are typically free, or cost only a few dollars. Consumers no longer expect to pay hundreds of dollars for software. I don't think Microsoft can sell copies of MS Office for $800 each any more, and expect people to buy it.

CAL made me

It is so Microsoft. Ridiculously complicated and expensive.

I'm not sure how long Microsoft is going to be able to maintain these schemes. The monopoly is beginning to crumble. At some point, MS is going to have to compete.

Luckily, I only have to deal with licenses rarely. But the guys at whom corporate tried to drop CAL, all told central buying to get another deal with MS or figured that shit out on their own. Even oracle licensing is easy compared to this.

I updated the evening of the announcement. Everything went smooth except for the time. Long download .. long installation.

I don't really notice much new in a usable way however, I do have a problem -- Safari no longer blocks pop-up windows. I've googled to find out why -- nothing. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I upgraded and but have no idea what new things they added to it.
