Osama Bin Laden killed!

^
They threw him in the sea.

He's now ruined the Oceans for me too.

On behalf of my friend Aaron who was killed in the WTC attack, I hope the sea barfs him back out.

And Jesus Chance.

Any chance of just giving it a rest?

You've become a ridiculous caricature on all these threads.
When ur happy with me I will know it's time to go

Not before

No big words ?

One of President Obama pledges if elected President was to go into Pakistan if conditions dictated it. I thought that sort of risky idea at the time, however I agree with those here who also point out that Bin Laden has always been in Pakistan. It was safe haven. I felt he was always sleeping on the tarmac under one of Pakistans 30 or active Nukes.

Aside from Pakistan not being a friend of the USA its leaders are also not a friend of Al-Qaeda. There have been numerous assassinations and attempts on its leaders. Along side the terrorist hell of 9-11 and in other Country's nightmares or the attack on the USS Cole Al-Quada waste many more times in horrible murders upon other Muslims

Pakistan is certainly involved with knowing all the time where he was and allowed safe harbor. But the reasons are complicated, and Paskstan is a dangerous place. They also shelter the developer of the Nuclear weapons program that North Korea, Iran, & Iraq looked into.

The CIA covert actions that located Bin-laden and using the Seals was a great move compared to the extreme cost in life and money used in Iraq or Afghanistan. But perhaps it forced him to stay in Pakistan where as Bin Laden would have had more options to hide had that not occurred.

President Obama is the commander and Chief this of this success-, his achievement. No doubt he didn't do the nasty stuff and that praise can be given to the brave military and CIA operatives that risk there lives with hard work. But sadly the glory all goes to the top, and usually a good leader will share in that success with the ones who made it possible.

But President Obama is much more deserving of a pat on the back then the CEOS of the banks or BP who all received hefty ridiculous bonuses for. Such as BP executives earlier this year even though they weren't the ones cleaning the Gulf or being blown up and burned to death on a oil rig. That sort of bonus program for the CEOS seems acceptable to some here who don't want to give the commander in chief the same respect for a job well done.
Had the Bin-Laden capture been a failure with USA casualties in Pakistan who can bet these same hacks would be calling him out as a failure. Much as Jimmy Carter found out when the military crashed helicopters in a sand storm trying to rescue the Iranian hostages in 1979.

Bin-Ladens death is a high point for President Obama and won't be forgotten. of course it won't take out the extremist murdering thugs but it will set them back.
He is more than a figure-head. He was the money and you can't plan even basic terrorist attacks without logistics. He was the 25 million plus bank that could transfer funds from Saudi legally or do it where it would be hard to trace. It is very hard to execute terrorism plans involving multiple fronts without a steady cash flow and its not hard to trace large sums of money coming from third world hell holes or Countries with terrorist activity without a good rich backer such as Bin Laden.

Looks like everything was handled smartly

And the effort prior to during and after with great care

I imagine the urge to move in quicker was real

As for Pres. Obama - it's not about HIM - as it would not have been about GWB

It's about the military - the men and women who risk their lives to defend us

Like Mazda

Sorry for my unwielding objection to Pirate's all too transparent attempt to make this another Political sideshow

But it sucks

Plain and simple

Let's get the rest of the fucks that perpetrated 911 and those who would do it again

Well, I'm a bit late joining the party. Watched the Borgia's last night and hit the rack. Saw it on MSNBC in the AM.

Wonderful news, no doubt and the president is to be congratulated. It's very much like Harry Truman being the first president fighting the cold war and George H.W. Bush being the final one. It's an effort over time. This information was developed over a four year span and over two administrations. That's called continuity and it works. Obama got the "K" so he gets the kudos.

Mazda is exactly right. Somebody on MSNBC made the comparison that even though Colonel Sanders is gone, KFC is still an operational franchise. It's much the same with the terrorists. Bin Laden had no real ability to run day to day operations given his situation. We've now got lots of little cells out doing their own thing. It's just a matter of some idiot now heading to a crowded mall with an AK-47 or an explosive laden vest. We're no where out of the woods yet.

It feels good, for sure. I do have a certain amount of envy for the SEAL who put that round into his coconut right between his running lights. That's called job satisfaction!

And to carry that one point further, I have been hearing this morning that Clintons efforts against Bin Laden started the focus on Bin Laden after the 1993 WTC bombing. So we have really been hunting this guy for two decades, not one, and thats twenty years of concerted effort over three administrations, to understand and track the bastard.

Obama as C in C decided to cut pakistan out of the intelligence loop and gave the planning for the killing of Osama to the CIA with joint support from the military intel and special ops.

This cross agency sharing of info was problematic and both Bush and Obama have contributed to creating a gov't apparatus and process that forces these agencies to works together.

Obama had a choice between a smart bombing or a covert operation. His choice to use the covert operation insured us of getting the dead body as proof. It was a good choice.

The fact that the seals had the skills to take a CIA contrived mission that entails using stealth to sneak into pakistan By night and kill only four people, just fifty miles from one of Pakistans biggest military base, and return with the target body is beyond impressive.

That is an impressive culmination of all the abilities of the agencies of the United states, and I am glad that they finally became managed effectively enough to pull such an impossible mission to fruition.

Its taken the USA twenty years to get up to speed, and alot of people contributed to us getting here.

who knew one mans death could create so much fuss....i will say my fb news feed is much worse...but honestly how do you tell the contingency in kandahar...bastion...etc that ultimately osama being dead means nothing

From Germany: Thank you very much and congratulations, Mr. President and Mr.Panetta!
Well done!

on gawker - even better one with Obama says "He's Dead" then walks off and kicks in the side door (like a real man would) ;)

it's a gif file and i'm challenged

Bin Laden's body is being "treated with respect" by the US, reports say, and will be buried within 24 hours, as is islamic custom.

To avoid his gravesite becoming a shrine, it's been suggested that his burial be at sea? Probably the best option.

Thoughts?

Excellent: we show ourselves to be better Muslims than he was, giving him the respect he wouldn't give the weak and innocent.

I wonder if some cult will spring up along the coast of the Arabian Sea.

dumped in the sea ?
What if it floats back and someone found his body?
They should make sure the shark eat the body first.

Heh. Burial at sea is an old art: wrap the body, weight it so it will lie flat when it gets to the bottom (assuming it's flat down there), with more weight at the feet so the body goes feet first. It goes down faster than a diver can swim, and when it hits the bottom, it stays there. Depending on where in the Arabian Sea they buried him, it could be two miles down.

Though on one of the shallower shelves would be better -- at six hundred feet depth, there are critters that will remove all trace but the bones within just days.

But the man that killed thousands has met his maker. I hope there is a special place in hell for Osama.

I already suggested it would be appropriate for him to be sent to gay Muslim heaven -- as one of the perpetual virgins available to some gay Muslim stud.

Does it?

War in Iraq
estimated civilian deaths : 98,380–107,369

War in Afghanistan

estimated civilian deaths: 14,000-34,000

I wonder how many of those were buried with the respect, because you are different.

While I often consider some notices of death relieving, I don't wish death upon anyone. It probably was impossible to capture him alive .. or at least very difficult .. nobody knows (for now) what exactly has been going on in this building. But the public reaction to this somewhat makes me uncomfortable.

By the way (as rareboy said) he was supposedly already "buried in the sea". = dumped into the water.

Your right we cant run around burying every person who loses their life. One would assume that local society would then do its part to ensure the dead are treated with the respect due.

Odd that in WWII 62% of the casualties were civilian and in Vietnam the number rose to 75%. That was the US assaulting a foreign land with impunity. Now we assess collateral damage with every mission plan.

We of course continue to lose less and less personnel as technology and protection improve. Using your numbers the civilian to US casualty looks like around half a percent to 5% of the total depending on whose data you believe or account for since it varies incredibly over these last ten years.

What should seem indisputable are two facts. 1) War is hell and casualties occur. 2) The number of dead civilians would be ten times higher if we simply carpet bombed our way over these two countries (or three if you include Pakistan)

Is it great? Hell no and if your family member died then that is all that counts to you. However we have gone to great lengths to understand and account for local requirements for the treatment of the dead. That is why we are out of Iraq well before the 25 years we spent in Germany and they still have a damn good chance to prosper. The same will be said of Afghanistan in another two years when we stop combat operations and simply train the security forces.

Please explain to me the demonstrated actions of any other country at war who had these goals in mind. You will find none.

I digress though. Point is that NOTHING is gained by succumbing to our base anger and making any dead body into a reason to fight harder. That should be simple to see.

wonder what the life span of this story will be on eve news/cable news/digital etc.

lindsay lohan might have a new issue

charlie sheen could find god

another athlete could make a gay slur

i wonder

thinking a week is all

just the way it is

I already suggested it would be appropriate for him to be sent to gay Muslim heaven -- as one of the perpetual virgins available to some gay Muslim stud.

LOL!!

Osama was not an attractive man. Those weird black lips and light skin. It would be a punishment for a gay man to have to fuck him.

This was the right thing to do for a number of reasons.

It Americans pissed on it, posed with the body laughing and showing disrespect, that would have been used by Al Qaeda as another recruiting tool.

Also, as Kuli mentioned we're supposed to know better, so we respected Islamic tradition with bodies.

Buried at sea solves the problem quickly and completely. No shrine, no Al Qaeda propaganda.

Quick, clean, efficient. Damn, those Navy SEALS are good! Just don't get them pissed off at you!

Former Vice President Dick Cheney:

"The death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of American forces is a victory for the United States and a tremendous achievement for the military and intelligence professionals who carried out this important mission. Their tireless work since 9/11 has made this achievement possible, and enabled us to capture or kill thousands of al Qaeda terrorists and many of their leaders. I also want to congratulate President Obama and the members of his national security team. At this moment when bin Laden has been brought to justice, we especially remember the sacrifice of the young Americans who've paid the ultimate price in defense of the nation, as well as the nearly 3000 Americans who lost their lives on 9/11. Al Qaeda remains a dangerous enemy. Though bin Laden is dead, the war goes on. We must remain vigilant, especially now, and we must continue to support our men and women in uniform who are fighting on the front lines of this war every day. Today, the message our forces have sent is clear - if you attack the United States, we will find you and bring you to justice."

^ once a hawk, always a hawk

you may not agree with Cheney, his politics, etc.

but he did what he thought was right

and tracking down/hunting (haha) enemies of the U.S. probably is better than sex for him

Conservatives will NOT be giving Pres. Obama or his admin anything but kudos - as it would be inconsistent with their the best defense is a strong offense philosophy

ironic that you quoted him - and did not follow with a remark about him being better off dead or in jail

British Prime Minister David Cameron:

"The news that Osama bin Laden is dead will bring great relief to people across the world. Osama bin Laden was responsible for the worst terrorist atrocities the world has seen - for 9/11 and for so many attacks, which have cost thousands of lives, many of them British. It is a great success that he has been found and will no longer be able to pursue his campaign of global terror. This is a time to remember all those murdered by Osama bin Laden, and all those who lost loved ones. It is also a time too to thank all those who work round the clock to keep us safe from terrorism. Their work will continue. I congratulate President Obama and those responsible for carrying out this operation."
