Oscars 2007

Re: Oscars

^Brilliant is an exaggeration. I didn't feel her angst in Dreamgirls. I didn't want to stand up and cheer for her success at the end. Her vocal skills are amazing, but she wasn't the best actress in the category. Now in my opinion, Rinko Kikuchi SHOULD have won that category. That girl wore her pain in the movie, and she didn't have to sing about it to give me a knot in my throat. She was most definately robbed. I hate hype.

Re: Oscars

Wow, Jennifer Hudson was the only character in Dreamgirls I felt anything towards. And her pain, sincerity, anger and everything else as Effie White was definitely appreciated

Yes, Kikuchi was awesome, especially considering that her character in Babel was all body language. It takes great skill to act without saying anything. Did you see her face when Hudson won? She was fucking pissed.

Edit: Jenny Lewis ROCKS!

Re: Oscars

Ellen was good...especially when compared to the likes of Chris Rock (Jude Law joke) and Dave Letterman (Uma-Oprah...Oprah-Uma).

I LOVE Jennifer Hudson. Her dress wasn't as bad as everyone has made it out to be.

Eddie Murphy deserved to win, especially since Alan Arkin was only in HALF of Little Miss Sunshine.

Helen Mirren was deserving, as was Forest Whitaker, but I couldn't help for an upset in both categories by Kate Winslet/Penelope Cruz and Ryan Gosling/Peter O'Toole.

I was surprised that The Departed won for Best Pic. I figured that Babel or LMS would get the top honor.

THANK GOD Marty Scorsese won. It's long overdue.

Yea! Kikuchi is quite an actress. Character filled even off screen. Hudson is a little vanilla for me.

P.S. Yes, Jenny Lewis does rock! :)

Re: Oscars

Bring back Jon Stewart, or Jerry Senfield, Ellen bombed, so not funny, and those mimes, what a boring show, 3 hours and 45 minutes of slow torture, remember when the Oscars were exciting? One of the best years for movies and the worst Academy Awards show! Thank God for Jennifer Hudson and the Dreamgirls medley, Eddie Murphy was robbed...

I was in agreement with you up until the Eddie Murphy comment. Alan Arkin is a GREAT actor, and has been giving great film performances for 41 years. He's LONG deserved the Oscar. And Eddie showed all the maturity of a 5 year old by leaving as soon as he lost. Bad, bad form.

Could someone please shoot Celine Dion, before she kills more music?

Re: Oscars

^ Yes, if they could just cut-out those acceptance speeches. Well, most of them, anyway.
The WHOLE POINT of the Oscars is to honor the winners, but you think the people being honored should just shut up and go home? I hate the way they cut off the winner's speeches. It is so rude! It's like they're saying: "We love you. You're brilliant! We worship your genius! Now shut up and go away!"

Re: Oscars

I thought Adranna Barazzo should have won for "Babel"--She was truly great!!

Re: Oscars

Acting truely is a matter of opinion (clearly as we can see in this discussion). The academy is very politicaly driven in terms of who is "worthy" of the award. I thought Helen Mirren and Martin Scorcesse was long overdue for an oscar. Whether or not the winners deserved their awards is arguable but having watched the oscars for years I found this years award show very predictable.

The only critism I have in terms of the whole voting prosess is I believe people should take into account the actors body of work. How can you award someones acting....in their debut?...how would you even know they're acting if that actor as only ever played one character?

I have a hard time criticing an actors skill when I've only seen that actor in ONE role because then I do not know how much of themselves is in that role and how much is character driven.

Remember the award is for the year's best PERFORMANCE in each category. The Lifetime Achievement Award honors a body of work. (Well, it's really sort of a consolation prize after the honoree's been passed over several times, as was the case this year with Morricone--or has become a legend little or no Academy recognition, eg, Cary Grant.)

The much-discussed Supporting Actress Oscar has always been a one-off prize. Jennifer Hudson joins 27 others who won on their only nomination, many of whom never produced a voluminous body of work, let alone one worth honoring. (Mira Sorvino? Donna Reed? Miyoshi Umecki?)

On the other other hand, in the past 25 years or so, the Supporting Actor prize has often doubled for the Lifetime Achievement Award. On merit alone, the award belonged to Jackie Earle Haley, then perhaps Murphy, followed by Hounsou. (Wahlberg's nod still puzzles me.) But, given the category, Arkin was bound to win. Ask Gielgud, Ameche, Palance, Landau, and Coburn: if you hang around long enough and give a solid performance in a decent movie, you get the bling. It started with George Burns in 1975, actually. But around here we didn't start calling it the "Dead Man Walking" award until Ameche won 10 years later.

Re: Oscars

I did not see the Japanese girl's face, but what I did see was Peter O'Toole's face expression. He looked like he did not believe it that he did not win.

I don't get it. I thought most of the indicators (the earlier critics' awards and so on) would have given the nominees some clues. Ok, Eddie Murphy deserved to be surprise when he did not win. Or Pan's Labyrinth's Producers and so on.

But for the Japanese girl, and Peter, they should have known what would be coming.

Re: Oscars

Lifetime Achievement Oscar for O'Toole next year, then. ;)

Re: OMG!!! The REAL Queen at the oscars afther party!

Thanks a lot for these great pix and for the link ..|.She's absolutely gorgeous. The hair remind me the "Shangai Surprise" look. Good memories for you, I suppose, Sean Penn!!!

Re: OMG!!! The REAL Queen at the oscars afther party!

I was just telling a friend last night how great Madonna looked in these pics. Think she had wk recently? She hasn't looked this great in years.

Re: OMG!!! The REAL Queen at the oscars afther party!

That ho is SMOKIN HOT! Hard to believe she's going to be 49 years old in less than six months. She's probably got a portrait in her attic that's aging. Either that, or she's sucking the lifeforce out of Guy to rejuvenate her youth -- he's been looking a little old and haggard lately.

Re: OMG!!! The REAL Queen at the oscars afther party!

Does anyone else think she looks like she did in the Pepsi "Like A Prayer" commercial from 1989 -- but with blond hair and without the stupid streak?

Re: Oscars

I do not feel that Jennifer has paid her dues to Hollywood and therefore should not have won. Her dress was way too tight for a girl her size. She does have an incredible voice, acting skills need more fine tuning.
Beyonce made me want to puck. Her voice was terrible
