Disclaimer: I`m not interested in the discussion on the life and acts of a particular Jubber or his legal case (Please, avoid referring to him or his case on this thread).

The main point of this thread is to discuss some preventative strategies, particularly those applying to an Internet forum as JUB. I’d like to agree on a concept of pedophilia before raising a few questions.

Is pedophilia a disease? A good number of Jubbers seem to reject this idea. The scientific evidence says otherwise. Pedophilia is both a disease and a criminal behavior according to experts. Pedophilia is recognized as a disease by the World Health Organization and Psychiatric Associations worldwide. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) defines pedophilia as a mental disorder (paraphilia) and a criminal behavior. A recent APA statement (2003) clarifies the diagnostic criteria. We can disagree with this view but mental health professionals work within this framework. For details see APA statement [Note 1]

Questions for discussion:
JUB has 100,000 members. Is only one Jubber affected by this disease/criminal behavior?? Probably not. The actual prevalence of pedophilia is unknown “because few pedophiles voluntarily seek treatment and because most of the available data are based on individuals who have become involved with the legal system. It is unknown how many individuals have pedophilic fantasies and never act on them or who do act but are never caught” [Note 2] Similar cases of pedophilia are expected among us.

How we -as a public forum- protect potential victims? Demonizing pedophiles is just an initial emotional response -understandable in cases like this- but hardly effective in the long term [Note 3] What can we do in order to protect victims and avoid the sexualization of children?

Pedophiles are savvy Internet users. Are we providing, in some degree, windows of opportunity for pedophiles? One of many strategies some pedophiles use is to post stories involving children or childhood memories (“How old were you when you first had sex?” etc) Those threads are not uncommon at JUB and in some cases are the perfect strategy for networking among pedophiles (via PMs or others). Are threads like this a risk in itself?? Ideas don’t kill people, but what about facilitation of potential networks behind the scene?

Note 1:

AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION (APA) STATEMENT
DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR PEDOPHILIA

June 17, 2003

Pedophilia, included in the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, continues to be classified as a mental disorder. The DSM is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals and provides clear, objective descriptions of mental illnesses, based upon scientific research. Pedophilia is categorized in the DSM-IV-TR as one of several paraphilic mental disorders.

The essential features of a Paraphilia are recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors that generally involve nonhuman subjects, children, or other nonconsenting adults, or the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one’s partner.

An adult who engages in sexual activity with a child is performing a criminal and immoral act and this is never considered normal or socially acceptable behavior. The American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
Fourth Edition Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria for Pedophilia (302.2) are:
A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual
urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children
(generally age 13 years or younger);
B. The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked
distress or interpersonal difficulty;
C. The person is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in
Criterion A.
Pedophilia generally is treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy. The therapy may be prescribed
alone or in combination with medication. Some examples of medications which have been used
include anti-androgens and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Relapse prevention is
also emphasized. However, the outlook for successful treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with Pedophilia is guarded.

I'm not a pedophile.........................everyone who sodomizes children should be punished by being fucked by a horse. ...............................

Thank you for that clarification of your sexual preferences. Though you are certain that you are not a sexual deviant I can't say much for your strange desires in social punishment for criminals.

I can't honestly believe that this is a punishment that you would like to see put into practice. You are just trying to be cool and make people notice you aren't you?

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

I wish all the threads about pedophilia would just go away.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

Can't this thread just disappear?

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

No matter how many threads we have, no matter how many times Oprah or Dr. Phil discuss rape and pedophilia.

It will continue to exist. As does everything.

If you see someone shady, then stand up and be the better person. That's all you can do.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

:goodevil:

The subject opens up a can of worms. By mentioning it, it keeps in the spotlight the unpleasant aspect of the subject.

By sweeping it under the carpet, one could be accused of trying to ignore the issue.

But this is a gay site, which has an archived message system, and which can be referenced from google and other indexing search engines. Thus it is possible to link JUB and paedophilia through this thread, even though it is a serious discussion about trying to prevent users like the recently deleted member.

As a matter of free speech, a lot of people have voiced their opinions in the recently closed thread. I think we have to leave it up to the mods to remove those people from this forum who are a threat to decency. As members who genuinely care about the JUB community and forums, we are the eyes and ears. The Report Post on the bottom left of each message is a notification system to alert the moderators to problems.

On the topic about past sexual experiences when individual members were younger, then I think this depends on the context of the thread question, and the answers received. Many a paper printed survey about sexuality have data gathered about people's earliest sexual encounters, and this in and of itself is not directly related to the abhorrent practice. For instance The Hite Report on Male Sexuality, or the well known Kinsey Report.

People should read and understand the Code of Conduct, and attempt to post within those guidelines. No doubt recent events will have caused a rethink behind the scenes on how to deal with such matters.

And I don't really believe pedophelia is a disease, it's just a bizarre fetish. Some guys are into extreme massive monstercocks, some guys are into vore, some guys are into autoerotic affixiation, and some guys are into young people. Still though, pedophelia is totally disgusting, and everyone who sodomizes children should be punished by being fucked by a horse. That'll show him what it's like.
We really need more creative sentancing like that.

Not an expert but I think pedophilia is a mental illness. The abused kids becomes the abuser.

Also people into eating shit, having sex with animals , extreme bondage is a mental issues too.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

They need to fix the age of consent in the usa

I seen millions of 18-20 year olds around here dating 16 year olds i don't see a problem with that. But i don't think pedophiles have a mental illness i mean they can still interact with people and stuff. I just think they have a sick twisted fetish and they need some kind of help

Same with people who are into eating shit, having sex with animals , extreme bondage its just a sexual fetish

They had a thing about a guy who dated a 16 year old and the father reported the guy and made the Daughter turn against the guy and he is a registered sex offender

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

People aged at different speed so a 16 year old may look 20.

i think the age of sexual maturity should be depends on how the person look at the time. If they look like an adult, they can make their own decisions for having adult fun.

I totally agree with this. As much as I'd like there to be some kind of magic bullet, there isn't much more that can be done here at JUB. I'm afraid we're stuck with eternal vigilence.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

Yes...let's all play the label war. Everything is better when you attach a label to it.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

This, being the internet, there is no way to screen for that kind or any kind of shall we say undesirable. For instance, my name here is 2 gayguys. What's to say I'm not 85 year old woman who happens to like gay porn.
Good luck.

Re: OT: Pedophilia - Preventative strategies at JU

Mentally ill = having an ILLNESS.

Illness = being SICK.

Being sick = having a DISEASE, no?

I think that mental illnesses, in general, are a form of disease. Think of the word DISEASE itself, in its most basic form. dis-EASE. Something's out of balance - something in the body is out of kilter. I didn't look up the derivation of the word, but I remember being told that "disease" derived from "being at DIS-ease."

I think it would have to also mean that the problem is chronic or long-term, OR that it has a predictable pathology (such as a cold). Paedophilia doesn't cause the body to break down, or tissue to atrophy or become infected, but on the other hand I think it usually causes stress which can make the body more susceptible to "catching something."

Everybody in this site will agree that having AIDS is indeed a disease. However, nobody gets sick dies directly from HIV/AIDS - the problems are caused because the body's immune system is weakened. Illnesses which would have normally been fought off are instead allowed to run rampant. If somebody gets sick from AIDS or dies from it, the medical pathology reports will instead say something like Kaposi's sarcoma, or some form of pneumonia, tuberculosis, cirrhosis of the liver, etc.

I don't think that medical reports ever say that the person died from AIDS, though it is probably mentioned as a contributing factor. A mental illness such as paedophilia (or biploar, or others I mentioned, etc.) can certainly contribute to stress, which can break down the body's resistance to cancers, etc. almost as much as HIV can.

I have a friend who is severely schizophrenic, and he freely believes that it is indeed a disease. The treatment involves pharmaceuticals, and though the treatment for paedophilia is the "blunt instrument" of "chemical castration" (removal of all sexual urges), there is indeed a drug treatment for it as with other treatable diseases...
