a discussion thread for those who would rather talk about the new Nic Cave or Black Keys records instead of Britney or Paula.

a few of my favorite releases of the recent past =
Consolers Of The Lonely - The Raconteurs
Attack & Release - The Black Keys
Accelerate - R.E.M.
The Odd Couple - Gnarls Barkley
Twenty One - Mystery Jets

You forgot Mariah and Madonna.

(!) (!) (!) (!)

The Raconteurs is tough. Sort of impenetrable. I have to sort of WORK at it to listen to it. I'm not saying music should be all surface and no substance, but I can't really seem to enjoy it on a casual level.

The REM I like. Lean and mean, all meat no filler, catchy.

yeah, i was really impressed with the new R.E.M.

i can't get enough of The Raconteurs though. and i also miss-spell it a lot. i feel the opposite about it though, it seems really accessable to me, and the more i listen the more i realize how damn good it is. i love the guitars. Branden & Jack are just perfect together.

yeah, i really like the new Gnarls album. i like that it seems darker and more focused. it's not just about being really catchy. not that i think they were trying to make something just really catchy with St. Elsewhere, but it seems they focused more on making all around better songs on this record.

i'm really into the new Black Keys record right now. i love it. i'm really impressed with how high the quality on it is.

i want to get Amerykah, but i haven't yet.

new Tapes 'N Tapes and Nick Cave come out on Tuesday! and a new Spoon EP!

I've got the Tapes'n'Tapes and Spoon. Both are pretty good. Spoon is mainly all remixes of the same song ("Don't You Evah") but it's still pretty fun. T'nT needs to grow on me some more.

I'm finding as I age that I have less interest in full-length albums, and just care about the "singles". Maybe because I've got so many damn albums that I really don't need another one cluttering up the rack. :)

I don't think it's mainstream so much as just overload.

I got an iPod a few months ago, and I've been working on loading it up. So far, all I've gotten in there is my older stuff - 1955-1985. I have earlier stuff, and tons of later stuff. I've got jazz, classical and world music still to go through, and I even have more 80s stuff to get in there yet, but 1955-1985 is what I've managed so far.

Song count right now: 7854.

I love hearing new music (or music that's new to me), and love coming across another great new song or band. But I don't need two "fantastic" songs and ten more "pretty good" songs cluttering up the stack. I'll just take the two fantastic ones. The singles are often (but not always) the best of the bunch, so I usually start there, then scan the rest of the disc. Sometimes there's something else worth keeping there, but quite often there isn't.

the new R.E.M. is pretty good. i haven't listened to it a lot, but if you like R.E.M. you'll probably dig it.

i am still a fan of the album as a whole, it's not very often that i like just one song from a band or artist. and if that's the case it's usually a pop song.
