Since my sunflower seedlings were nibbled to bits by some creature a week or so ago, fellow Jubbers were offering suggestions for deterrents and capsaicin was mentioned. I had cayenne pepper here and someone mentioned I should try it as the animals don't care much for it.

I've been sprinkling it on the flower beds since then and, this afternoon, I was filling the shaker (an empty herb bottle) and a gust of wind caught the pepper and blew it right into my face. . . and my eyes.

If I may borrow from the Mythbusters:

Do Not Try This At Home!

I said it would probably work. If you recall, I suggested crushed red pepper. Those don't blow around quite so easily. And I was thinking of putting it in a bird feeder, not sprinkling it it on the ground with a shaker bottle.

Had I mentioned that contact lens solution dissolves capsaicin? Good for an eye rinse.

I don't have any of those in the house. I had an unopened package of ground cayenne pepper tucked in the back of a cupboard and decided to give it a try. It seems to work but I have to reapply it after it rains.

I wouldn't do it on a windy day though.

It wasn't a windy day. Just the occasional gust, one of which happened to gust at a very inopportune time. ..|

Get a ScareCrow. I had a problem with my neighbors dogs peeing all over the grass and ruining it. I tried all kinds of things, including cayenne pepper, that didn't work until I stumbled across this wonderful device. It is a motion activated sprinkler. When something comes near it, it activates and sprays water. The dog would not go near it nor would any other animal. But I do admit to forgetting it was there and getting myself soaked a few times. This is one of best things I've ever bought.

Now you know how my hash browns feel when I drench them in Tabasco Sauce.
