Outlook 2007 Playing Up

Hi, so I have my email account linked to my BlackBerry and also my Outlook 2007. When I am at home, and I have an email come through on my BlackBerry I go onto my Outlook 2007 to read and reply to it.

However, today I have had four emails come through onto my BlackBerry but none of which are showing up on my Outlook. I have exited Outlook, rebooted the PC, then reopened Outlook, but it is still not showing up...

When I check my mail through www.hotmail.com all my unread emails appear perfectly, but I can't see them through Outlook 2007 (this includes my Junk email folder).

When I open up Outlook, my last email showing is one that I received on Tuesday. I hit 'Send/Receive' and the little box pops up and then disappears. Then, in the bottom right hand side of Outlook, a little error message that reads 'Send/Receive error - click here'.

So, obviously, I click there. The little box pops up again and then another error message reads:

'Access to the account was denied. Verfiy that your username and password are correct. The server responded 'Forbidden'.'

My course of action was: Tools --> Account Settings --> Hotmail --> Repair

And then I would retype all my relevent information for that email account (name, email address, password, etc.) and then click 'Next'. It then moved on to the 'configuring' page which then showed me another problem:

There was a tick next to 'Establish Network Connection' and also 'Search For Server Settings'. BUT, there is a big red cross next to 'Log On To Server'.

Why is this? My internet is working fine, I am able to search the internet etc., I just can't 'log on to the server' for my Hotmail account for Outlook 2007.

Any advice?

Hmm. I'm wondering if when you used the "Tools --> Account Settings --> Hotmail --> Repair" option, you somehow lost the configuration surrounding the "Microsoft Outlook Connector" (or lost that component itself). I'm just taking a stab. You can read about that component and download it (if you need it again) here from Microsoft. Maybe you don't need to do a full-blown "repair" and retype all the info.

There's also some tips from Microsoft here, including more connector explanation. Also check this and this out.

Again, not sure if your issue is "Microsoft Outlook Connector" related, but at least confirm if that is installed for you and its status - might be an okay place to start. Good luck!

Actually, you raise a good point Corny - I was curious if that was still the case and found this from earlier this year. So perhaps the original poster doesn't need the "Connector", but can try those settings directly and do the POP3/SMTP thing.

Well I have 1,400 contacts all linked to my Hotmail account. It's simple, it's easy, it's effective.

I have never had a problem with Hotmail and have been using it for 9 years now.

Why do I need to change? What difference does it make? No matter what server I use, I will still read the messages in my Outlook. So there shouldn't be a problem.

OK, it turns out that Hotmail have moved from DAV protocol to POP3 (I don't know what all of this means).

So I have had to delete my Hotmail type HTTP from my Outlook and, then, re-create, through much fiddling etc. a Hotmail type POP3 account for Outlook.

The new emails then show up in my local 'Inbox' folder. However, how do I get all my emails that are on my Junk email folder on my Hotmail server to appear in my Junk email folder on my Outlook client?

This is all a massive learning curve for me. Evidently, as it is now 03:13am and am still fiddling around with this.

/\ i was just going to say. as of sept 1 hotmail changed their email service. you should have gotten an email on it about a month ago. i did. of course i forgot until it stopped working.

Quick question. I deleted all my old mail accounts from Outlook. So now I have no showing.

I then follow the instructions through the link that you provided on how to set up my Hotmail POP3 account which is all fine, everything is synced with www.hotmail.com server which is great.

My question is, my Outlook does not stop downloading my messages from the server. I went to bed as it started syncing (and I have 931 messages on my Hotmail server after culling) but after it finishes downloading all those messages, it starts again, so I woke up with almost 7,000 email messages downloaded into my Outlook client...

Why is this?

OK, I can't seem to find the edit button for my previous post, thus I will simply do another post to update the situation:

I removed my Hotmail type HTTP account from Outlook so now I have no email account attached to Outlook 2007.

I then proceeded to create my Hotmail type POP3 account to be linked into my Outlook 2007 client following the instructions provided in the above link.

I then go back to my Personal Folders, and Outlook 2007 proceeds to download my 940 messages on my Hotmail server. That's all fine.

So now I have my 940 messages on my Outlook 2007 client AND also on my Hotmail server.

I need and want my email messages to stay on both my Hotmail server and on my Outlook 2007 client because sometimes I need to access my email account from various computers and my email messages also get forwarded to my BlackBerry (which wouldn't happen if I UNcheck the box 'leave messages on server).

After all the messages have been downloaded to my Outlook 2007 cleint, I have 940 unread messages in my Outlook 2007 (naturally), so I then click the option to 'Mark All as Read'.

Then, after the next Send/Receive begins (either automatically or if I click it myself), it begins to re-download all of the 940 email messages from the Hotmail server that it has just downloaded to Outlook 2007.

I don't want Outlook to re-download the messages that it has already downloaded to my Outlook 2007 client; I simply want it to download the new, unread messages that I get.

Why is this happening? Have I screwed a time stamp? My Send/Receive interval is set at every 20 minutes.

I would try starting from scratch, delete accounts and data files and trying again.

What you really want though is to do it with something called IMAP, just about every other free email account offers this. Of course, Microsoft doesn't.

What IMAP does is synchronise a client (Outlook, Blackberry) with the server. So if you delete a message in Outlook it will delete it off the server. Read it on your Blackberry and it will mark it as read in Outlook.

I was having all sorts of problems accessing my Hotmail account through Outlook. A friend suggested I should try a different browser, so I downloaded Firefox. Problem solved. Also, the internet generally is quicker on Firefox and the security is better.

Outlook is an email client, Firefox is a web browser. Not the same thing, unless by Outlook you mean Internet Explorer or Firefox you mean Thunderbird.
