I'm young, only 19. I've been having stomach problems for quite a while now, I suffer from my problems on a daily basis and it is extremely uncomfortable and affects my life majorly. It's like my stomach is constantly hurting and I constantly feel the need to use the restroom even sometimes not even really having to. I suffer from diarrhea more than anyone I know and it's all really to the point where it's outrageous. I've been to the doctor for it about two times where nothing was really done but a blood test that came back clean. Some months ago a hard lump developed in my chest and I immediatly went to the doctor, I was then given a mamogram to test to see if it was breast cancer, which it wasn't, after that I heard nothing else from the doctor. This bump now often hurts and sometimes it hurts the most only when my stomach is really hurting, I now believe they are related somehow. If I don't take anything such as immodium ad my stomach just gets worse throughout the day. Any idea of what this issue is?

I have a similar problem although I'm not in pain. I must take Immodium every day in order to control my bowels. I've been to the doctor 4 times over a year and he says that it just takes time for these things to cure themselves. I'm seriously considering trying another doctor which you might do as well. I also know that in my case, much of the problem is due to stress. That could be your issue as well.

See another doctor or ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist.

ya, sounds like an odd issue. i had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done when i was 15. it's a rather invasive procedure, but the best thing in diagnosing digestive ailments. see a specialists, and maybe he'll recommend that.

wow well I am not sure about the lump on your chest but the stomach problem sounds much like IBS. I have suffered from IBS since I was 7 but it hasn't been nearly as bad as you are describing and its been much much more controllable over the past 3 years now. Go to a specialist b/c there are things that can help you out in that department other than immodium.

I checked your profile, but you didn't say where you live. Could it be you live in a tropical climate? I do, although it is a very high altitude climate, tropical none the less. A lot of people here suffer from your description of the problem, and usually it is either amoebic or bacterially related. If we get it we just take a pill for it and it goes away in a few days.

OMG, I am sorry you are going through this. It is awful to have unresolved medical problems. Of course it is impossible to do anything on an internet board but make suggestions. Since I suffer from food allergies and have done a lot of reading about it that was the first thing that occurred to me. This is not my allergy but what you describe sounds like it could be Celiac disease; the inability to digest gluten (wheat and related products). It causes major stomach problems. I have no idea about the lump but it wouldn't hurt to do a little research on Celiac to see if it fits you. A place to start: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/
Doctors can do all kinds of tests but a gluten free diet apparently is the only treatment. There's no way to know if its this or one of the other suggestions or none of them so far. You could however try a gluten free diet for a week or two and see if it helps. It's something you could try on your own, for free, and it won't hurt you other than being a pain in the ass. You must not eat anything with the slightest amount of gluten. Research carefully, wheat and related products are in all kinds of stuff. You may even find gluten listed on labels. If the diet helps you then you can go to the doctor with the information for further diagnosis. If it doesn't help, well at least you've eliminated one thing. Good Luck.

I was in your situation for about 5 years or so - it started in my Freshmen year of high school. Symptoms identical to yours took over my life - it was horrible. I know what it feels like and I know the pain, both physical and emotional, that comes along with it. I went to doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist, and had just about every test related to stomach and gastrointestinal problems done.

I'm not sure what the lump on your chest was about - perhaps a swollen lymph nod? Honestly, the probability of them being related is fairly low. Still, I definitely encourage visiting as many doctors as you can - it just takes the right individual to help you get back to feeling better.

I honestly can't say I did one thing or another to alleviate any of the symptoms. I did focus on what I ate and when I ate - I avoided high-fat foods, anything with grease or oil, etc. I've since become a vegetarian and must admit that my diet is the healthiest its been since before Freshmen year of high school. I've also de-stressed my life dramatically, realizing that stress more often than food was my trigger.

Educate yourself on your diet and your body - ask your doctors questions - do your own research - figure out what element in your life, whether food or stress or something else, contributes to your symptoms...

EDIT - Oh, and take it easy on the Immodium. That kind of medicine isn't intended for long term use...and its possible to build up some form of resistance. I used Immodium heavily the first year - we're talking once a day, sometimes two - and now the medication is not an option for me. Immodium is okay for extreme emergencies, man, but maybe you can find a more natural means for alleviating your symptoms?

I had really bad stomach pains my sophmore year of college(now about 5 years ago)...I hadn't noticed but I dropped 20lbs...and really hadn't been eating...cause my stomach always hurt and I was going to the bathroom a lot...once night I just started throwing up for about 7 hours straight finally went to the ER....they just hydrated me and said drink some gatorade when I get home....I got home started throwing up again(this time it was black which freaked my mom and myself out) called an ambulance cause after I laid in my bed I started hyperventalating...went to the hospital and they were putting me in a room and were gonna do a colonoscopy in the morning..my aunt who's a nurse said absoltuely not transfer him to my hospital riht now(Children's Hospital in BostoN) about an hour later I was in surgery because I had a blockage in my small intestine...I had a bowel resection and was diagnosed w/ Chron's disease. I'm fine now...i apparently have a really mild case...unlike many people with Chron's i'm not on any meds except for the occasional Immodium.....but I'd def go get it checked out...cause you don't want it to get to as bad as I was....cause believe me it was hell...never been in so much pain

oh yeah and I saw three doctors before that night....all said something different...none of them said Chron's disease.....and so three doctors...three hospitals in one night....it definitly doesn't hurt to get a second opinion or third or fourth

A lot of doctors dont understand stomach issues and how debilitating it can be. 4Doctors 3 hospitals before I found someone to look. My sons problem was initiated by antibiotics, and when they did colonscopy it "cleaned him out and let normal bacteria grow back. so, keep searching and make sure diagnosis adds up to make sense or cures you(*8*)

Episode on Discovery Health the other night showed a lady with a similar problem. Apparently her gall bladder was releasing to much bile into her system.

Go see a different doctor. I ended up having Ulcerated Colitis. It sucked for a long time.

To the OP, if your doctor doesn't want to do anything about your problem you need to see another doctor and ideally with this sort of problem if it is ongoing I'd say you'll need to see a specialist.

You may need an endoscopy and/or gastroscopy to find out exactly what the problem is. I suffered uncomfortable stomach pain for some time before an endoscopy identified a congenital problem - the stomach pain was completely releived by taking a tablet a day to reduce stomach acid secretion.

Lately I also suffer from urgent diarrhea. A gastroscopy found nothing wrong so the specialist said to just take immodium. I take 4-6 tablets every day which prevents diarrhea on most days. I wasn't told or haven't read anything about Immodium not being safe for long-term use - I assumed the general warning to not take it for more than a few days etc was due to the potentially dangerous conditions that diarrhea can be a symptom of.
