A bit too bland for my taste and I don't like the wall paper but I'm sure that it has some sort of historical significance.

One word.

Yuk

Agreed. A real snore fest.

Then again my tastes run along a modern-primitive theme whereby all of my furniture is crafted by hand, from natural materials, (ie... 200 year old reclamation teak, stone, leather, wool, etc......), but yet have very clean, modern, lines with an idea towards minimalism.

When I was promoted to running the Singapore / SE Asian office, my budget was $18,000 which I used every dime, and then some, but I think it looks great. I went over budget by only $670.00 so not too bad. I'll dig up a photo when I get a chance and post it.

Michael Smith is capable of beautiful, inspired work. That the Oval Office is neither, undoubtedly says more about his clients and their tastes and goals than it does his talent.
By the way, all of the Oval Office interiors I've seen published from the 50's on have been mediocre to bad. This one is simply the most bland.

I'd love to see a design inspired by these kinds of lines:

Bauhaus_Chair_Breuer.png

Problem is of course, that is a european chair, and it would not be a proper style example for the Head of State in a non-European country. But style also spontaneously and legitimately crosses borders back and forth. Anyone know any American examples from the same period that look a little less stodgy than how they actually decorated, and a little more forward-thinking?

Mmm. that worked better. I'll ask a mod to delete the earlier post..

I thought the colors and such were rather "earthy" and bland. But then I am sure the media would have had a field day were it done in anything but pastels and beige....

It's still an ugly room compared to some of the other world leaders' offices.

It is a nice gesture by President Obama too.

The Audacity of Taupe
Hah! That's brilliant. There was a better picture in the Times Thursday, and I definitely like losing the blue and gold striped chairs. It lacks coherence, but it's a tough room.

I think it's just shocking because it's a warm taupe theme instead of the usual cool light-blues and whites.
