Ok, so when I am doing some writing or whatever in Pages, I save it, and it doesn't ask me what I want to save it as. Ok fine. I then want to re-open it, it says the format is not supported!! ? Ok, so I found a way to open files, by going into Pages, and instead of starting a new document, opening an existing one..it works, but its really annoying. Anyone else having problems?

Since you can open the document once you're in pages, I'm going to take a guess that perhaps when you double click on the pages document it may be trying to open it in another program that is telling you it is an unsupported format.

Do this: double click on the document and look in the upper left corner next to the Apple menu to see which application is active when it's telling you it's the wrong format. It may be your Mac is trying to open the document with some other program like text edit.

If that is the case go back to the finder, right click (or control click if you have a one button mouse) on the document, go to Open with, then select Other, then select Pages, and below click the checkbox that says "Always open with" Then all pages files should automatically open with pages again, if that was the problem....

Thanks! I did the open with, an tried to open it with pages, but it wasnt letting me ? It would not even let me try, the icon for pages was opaque..

Hmm...maybe you really did save it in some other format then, but it's odd you can open it from within Pages...if you right click on the file in the Finder and go to Get Info, look under "Kind" and you can see which file type it is.

In any case since you can open the documents in Pages from within pages, you could try resaving them with save as in the Pages format

It says its a pages document.. but is opening with text edit. I tried to change opens with to Pages, but it doesn't let me click it.. oh well. Macs are the greatest after all... Thanks for the help anyways :D

Oh so it is trying to open with textedit

In that case do what I said in my original reply and since you said that Pages is grayed out, just select from the drop down menu beneath called "Enable": "All Applications"

Doing that should let you pick Pages

Although it's pretty weird that it wouldn't let you just with recommended applications enabled

Im so so so so so dumb!!! Thanks so much!!!! YAY! Hopefully it will not do this anymore, with new documents I create...

Yay!

I made the world a better place if only in a small way today.

Now that'll be $200....

JK ;)

Can I piggyback another question about Pages onto this thread? When using pages, spellcheck doesn't allow me to "Add" a word. Add is greyed out and a friend who's a Mac expert couldn't help me. Has anyone got a solution? Cheers

A good habit to get in -- after launching an application, name the document in save as At this point you can tell it where to save it. Do this before you write a single word. Keep saving as your write (command+s)

And do repair your permissions before and after installing updates. It's like saying " I love you Mac" :D It is not intensive and can run in the background.
