lately I have been getting painful erections when I wake up. usually I just j/o to get rid of it in the morning so I can go back to sleep without it bothering me, but it hurts too much.

Does it hurt in one place (where?) or along the length of your penis?

How hard do you grip your meat, and would that have any bearing on why it hurts?

The last question would be, how many times a day do you masturbate?

Over doing it can make the penis hurt.
Other types of pain may come from having a tight foreskin.

If none of these, then, a doctor is your best option, in case it is something else more sinister.

it's my entire penis. I guess I grab it kind of hard; my penis doesn't really get that hard anymore. 1-3 times every day, some days I don't masturbate at all.

Do you J/O dry? When I beat it dry, it can hurt sometimes.

I think therein lies the answer. Holding it too hard may have bruised the soft tissue making it sore. Give your boner a rest for a few days and see if it settles down.

If not then see a doctor.

Do you feel any discomfort or pain when you urinate during the day? Any change in the pressure of the flow? And what does "lately" mean? Last few days, weeks, months?
