Charles Krauthammer has written an opinion piece about how Obama star is fading and Palin is rising. It is fascinating.

But Palin is not just a problem for Obama. She is also a symptom of what ails him. Before Palin, Obama was the ultimate celebrity candidate. For no presidential nominee in living memory had the gap between adulation and achievement been so great. Which is why McCain's Paris Hilton ads struck such a nerve. Obama's meteoric rise was based not on issues — there was not a dime's worth of difference between him and Hillary on issues — but on narrative, on eloquence, on charisma.

The unease at the Denver convention, the feeling of buyer's remorse, was the Democrats' realization that the arc of Obama's celebrity had peaked

— and had now entered a period of its steepest decline. That Palin could so instantly steal the celebrity spotlight is a reflection of that decline.

One star fades, another is born. The very next morning McCain picks Sarah Palin and a new celebrity is launched. And in the celebrity game, novelty is trump. With her narrative, her persona, her charisma carrying the McCain campaign to places it has never been and by all logic has no right to be, she's pulling an Obama.

But her job is easier. She only has to remain airborne for seven more weeks. Obama maintained altitude for an astonishing four years. In politics, as in all games, however, it's the finish that counts.

in light of her recent interview with charles gibson where she could not answer basic questions any VP would need to know, i think it was a bad decision to pick palin.

she is now their linchpin and if her star comes crashing down under greater scrutiny, she will drag the whole mccain campaign with her.

it seems the republican strategy of hyping national security has backfired, with their VP candidate's foreign policy experience is "living next to russia".

^ Easy to write in hypotheticals. We'll see what happens.

She hardly seemed presidential in her TV interview, but then bumbling Bush never seems presidential either and he was elected twice.

Ultimately, people vote for the top of the ticket. McCain looks and sounds very tired.

i wasnt trying to be hypothetical, i corrected "When" to "if". it still gets my point across. i think people are being set up for a big dissapointment, she is the next quayle.

Sorry, your previous post and mine crossed. I was replying to the Original Poster.

I hope you're right. As you say, her TV interviews suggests she might continue to trip herself up.

On the other hand, her "base" is so nuts they'd probably continue to think she's wonderful unless she had an abortion or lesbian affair.

Look at all the guys here who support her, even though she doesn't want them to have the same healthcare and other benefits as straights.

Wow,a noted rabid conservative columnist is saying that Democrats have ''buyers remorse'' after the convention.Who knew? I sure didn't get that impression.

Krauthammer is just towing the party line..

Another thing, after Caribou Barbie didn't do too hot on her interview last night.

We'll see who's star is fading..

Hopefully, the Gibson interview will be the Turning Point.

She's become quite the celebrity but only today's flavor of the month. No substance there and people will see it. For now, people are curious. Obama has nothing to worry about except from people that want to make her a dealbreaker in their zealousness to keep the rethugs in.

Im bumping this thread because its become quite clear that if McCain loses it will be because of Sarah Palin and her smear tactics being rejected by voters.

I hate to say that I am enjoying watching Sarah Palin being dismantled by the media and taking McCains hatemongering campaign down with her.

Her "base" is no more nuts than the fools who continue to support the Messiah, in spite of all the evidence showing what a sham candidate he truly is.

As someone one famously said, 'it all depends upon whose Ox is being gored.'

She's definitely becoming more of a labor of love thing, emphasis on labor. Aren't her approval ratings slipping? It's funny to read the OP in today's context.

"Slipping"?

Well, she doesn't have far to go to match Hillary's negative ratings with voters -- not bad, for the brief time she's been visible!

I know it sounds crazy but yes, slipping. Once upon a time there were lots of people who liked this lady. There still are, but not so many. Personally I think she'd have a great career doing voiceovers.

No... see, when someone says "I'm slipping", I understand a short movement that won't take a whole lot to recover from. What Palin is doing is what I think of when someone screams, "Oh, shiiiiiiiiiiiit!" and the voice is getting dimmer by the moment.

For a woman who 90% of Americans had never heard of until seven weeks ago, Sarah Palin's meteoric fall has been impressive.

One reason why I don't want her to become vice president is because I want to see if she can actually win re-election as governor of Alaska.

At this rate, we're more likely to see her on the next season of the Surreal Life.

Kudos to evanrick for bumping this thread up. What a difference a month makes! Nowadays the most fascinating thing about Palin is reading that the RNC spent $150,000 on her clothes and accessories http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14805.html or how she believes the VP job is to be in charge of the Senate. http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/21/palin-vp-senate/ .

Sadly, it looks like Tina Fey has stolen Palin's fading spotlight.

if you can't buy your clothes and the government buys them for you is that socialism?
