Read somewhere that it was somewhere like Alice In Wonderland kind of story. Just saw it, and I was surprised to see the violence in the film. Wonder what Alice would think of the movie.

Still, I can understand the praises. The movie is magic.

Wish for a better ending though.

I went to see it with my cousin a couple of weeks ago. When she suggested it, I had never heard anything about it. I did not know the whole movie was going to be in subtitles, so the beginning of the movie I was waiting for it to go to English. LOL...Overall this film is very unique and I have never seen a movie like it!

Alice lives in a very twisted world, too... where everybody want to cut her head off... so much violence... :D

What a great film. Much darker than I was expecting, but all the better for that. It was just so good on so many different levels, it has to win Best Foreign film.

WARNING!! I talk about the film so if you have not seen it skip this post!

I had to see it following all the Oscar buzz and it is well worth watching, probably more than once. The movie is no fairytale as it confronts the very adult themes of war, death, and immortality (or the quest for it). I would love to read an intellectual review of this movie that analyzes the various themes and symbols. For example, what is the significance of the women? There is the mother who is weak, Mercedes who is very strong, and Ofelia who is very smart and is desperately trying to escape the real world. There are no corresponding men. Captain Vidal is strong in the way brutality is seen as strength, but there are no other significant male characters. Indeed there are no male servants. AH, I think one explanation comes to me. Mercedes says Vidal's arrogance/chauvanism made him overlook her as a possible threat.

The theme and symbols concerning time are also important. Vidal has his father's watch and we see him working on it during the movie. Vidal also seeks immortality through his son. Ofelia's fantasy is about reaching immortality. She probably fantasizes so much to escape the horror of the real world, but she also obviously misses her father who has passed (and was probably murdered by Vidal). It is quite troubling that a child concerns herself with her own mortality (a modern example would be Anna Nicole Smith who seemed obsessed with her own death). At the end Ofelia achieves her immortality and she is reunited with her father, but Vidal is denied immortality. His watch will not be passed on to his son and neither will his son even know his father's name. This horrifies Vidal.

Finally, there is the Spanish Civil War. In school I was not taught about this conflict but I have learned that it was quite brutal and Franco survived with assistance from the Catholic church (which I am convinced is an evil institution). In the movie we see the brutality of the dictatorship through Vidal, but we also see that the war has made the rebels brutal as well. In the end, of course, only brutality survives which I think is the message.

saw it finally a little while ago. loved it and everything too bad about the mom and the girl though. but all else was right with this one. There were some freakish looking monsters up in that movie. The one with the eyes that fit into its hands.

Brilliant movie - and holy shit, that banquet scene was one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen in a movie!

So was it all a fantasy? Was it all in her head?

They left it up to the viewer to decide. Del Toro said he believed it was real.

I'm still collecting my thoughts, having just seen it.

B...E...A...Utiful.

That song is going to be stuck in my head forever.

Edit:

How does someone watch that and think this?

Opinions are like arseholes...

Everyone has one...

I just wish some people would clean the crap off of them before they air it for the public to see.

it was completely amazing, totally horrifying, and completely freaky, all in the same bit.

I was freaked out of my mind when that handeye thing(JS's avatar) got up and started doing it's thing. I especially liked the part at the end when she refused to kill the baby, and the ending was beautiful. All in all, a very amazing movie. As a side note, I especially liked the 'increased smile' the maid gave the commanding officer.
