Paranoid but I want to say it...

Well I went back to the Dr. yesterday. He looked at my throat and saw that there was some white patches on the back of it (mucus) and he did do a throat culture. The one he tested in the office came back negative for strep but the one he sent out to the lab hasn't come back yet. He did however, put me on another antibiotic to hopefully help the sore throat and swollen glands go away. I have always over thought things (if you guys haven't noticed lol) but it just has always been something that has scared me, even though I stuck to low risk activities. Anyway this morning I noticed that I did have small white bumps on various places in my mouth, but mainly high up in the folded areas of my mouth (where the gum meets the lining of the mouth). I'm guessing this is thrush? I looked it up and saw that, yes it occurs in people with HIV, but also in people who have mono, got treated with steroids, and have been and are being treated with antibiotics. Well I do have mono, took steroids for my glands, and have been on 2 antibiotics, but it still just shakes me up. I'm sorry I keep blabbing on and on about this, it just helps to be able to say my thoughts on here, instead of my parents or something. I think I would feel differently if I wasn't being seen by a Dr. and stuff, but since I am, I just like to be able to throw my thoughts out here. Ohh and he took more blood just to double check and make sure everything is still good, but he still reassures me that there isn't anything to worry about. Thanks for listening guys...I truly do appreciate it

I'm sure I will updating this thread again soon enough lol.

What you are describing sounds like candidiasis which is commonly called "thrush". It's a very common side effect of antibiotics.

If it gets more pronounced, your doctor can prescribe a swish and swallow medication for you that will help clear it up.

Candida overgrowth is quite common and it is not diagnostic for HIV infection. For example, diaper rash in children is caused by candida.

You need to find something to take your mind off all of this. You've still got a while until you completely recover from your mono.

Uh, yeah... and I'm not sure why you are on antibiotics in the first place. Mono is a self limited VIRUS that is not killed with antibiotics. I did without them and came through fine. If you really have mono, I'd stop the antibiotics (talk to your doctor first in case there is something I'm missing... but if he says it is for the mono, I'd stop them and maybe look for a new doctor).

I had to google "Mono", I had heard of it before but didn't know the symptoms.

My friends always joke about getting mono. Since we always share a pipe when we smoke weed.

I've never gotten sick, and well from the looks of it I haven't gotten mono either.

I am on antibiotics because he wants to try to help clear up the mucus in the back of my throat...he actually wants me to come back in tomorrow so that he can look at what I have in my mouth and hopefully give me a mouthwash or something because its only been 2 days and it has spread pretty far on one side of my mouth. So I guess we will see what's going on tomorrow. I may look for a second opinion just to make sure that 2 doctors come to the same conclusion, but we will have to see.

I went back to the Dr. and his partner actually saw me. My blood work came back and it appears I have acquired a case of mono hepatitis. So i guess my liver is slightly enlarged? Anyway he put me back on steroids and he thinks I would have been good if I had had a larger dose in the beginning. Anyway I am on them and also medicine for the thrush I have in my mouth. Even though I have only had two doses of the meds I already feel better than I have in a while.

Many years back end of 96, begining of 97 I was very very ill. I was delivering papers and going to school full time. I came down with what I thought was a bad cold in December of 96. I was running constant fever, night sweats, sick, sore throat, no appetite. I went to the Dr. and he said I had the flu and to rest. Well fast forward to New Years Eve- I had a date and I was a lousy date. Still not feeling the best and very tired. My mom came home late that night and took my temp- I was at 105F. I was told to go to the ER by our on call physician at the Dr's office. I remember going in there, they weighed me and I had lost like 15 lbs in about four weeks. They admitted me and kept me for about 24 hours. Still no mono. but they said it was a bad flu virus I had caught. Gave me anti viral steriods. Then like two weeks later I went back to see the dr. I had all the white spots on my throat, could barely swallow, only drank fluids as I couldnt hold down solid food at all and still running high fever. I had lost another 10lbs. My Dr. finally told me that he was admitting me to the hospital for a battery of tests and he specifically asked me if I had unprotected "gay" sex- I told him I was gay but always use protection. He still requested an HIV antibody test. Well long story short was the Epstein Barr test (for mono) came back positive, I had a severely swelled spleen, and had hepatitis brought on by the mono as well. So I was actually sick with it from about the end of the first week of Dec. 1996 thru the end of February of 1997- and it took me until August of that year to regain all of my energy and feel somewhat normal again. To this day I still have issues and get a lot of colds and sometimes the flu- I cannot drain myself or I get sick. If you get the serious infection it can be hell for months. To this day I still have no idea how I got it as I was not kissing a lot of boys, likely was just running my system down with my job, school, and not sleeping much.

At one time, it was believed that the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) that causes mono was acquired from intimate contact. Since it hit teenagers and once upon a time the only body fluid teenagers exchanged was saliva (boy that was a long time ago), it was called the "kissing disease".

The studies are showing that EBV can be acquired through all sorts of less intimate contact and that most people in the US have been exposed at one time or another. What we don't know is why some of us get a mild cold while others get mono will all of the complications that are discussed in this thread.

I still don't think the antibiotics are indicated.

As to the steroids... the evidence is mediocre at best. I also had hepatitis with the mono (that's not uncommon either). Didn't use any steroids. As justndav stated, it can take a long time to get over it. Rest is KEY. If you don't rest, it will just drag on... trust me, I did that.

Check out this article... it's pretty good...

Well I'm resting trust me...it's been a few days now and I feel 90% back to normal. I am still on the steroids though but the Dr. is going to be taking me off them slowly and hopefully my glands won't swell up again. I'm just relaxing but its NOT that relaxing cause I am ready to leave the house lol...but I am going to continue to take it easy until I get my blood checked again to see if the hepatitis is going in the right direction (mono will still appear positive in my blood for months).
