BOO!!! Mwahahahaha!!!!!
That's not how it went. The DVD ending was the same as the theatrical version. The DVD included bonus material that was 1 of the 2 alternate endings, which most everyone had already seen on YouTube when PA was still in theaters. It was not something new made for the DVD. I don't recall them saying "it was too scary to show in theaters." Actually Steven Spielberg preferred the theatrical ending, which is why that is one they made official. DVDs including alternate endings is not a new concept. Directors often film alternate endings before deciding which one to use.
I remember the commercials that advertised a "new ending too scary to be shown in theaters"! Saw and heard that ad right on the TV.
I know the idea of alternate endings is nothing new (how many different possible endings did Clue: the Movie have?), but the whole "Ooh, its too scary to be shown in theaters" line was just a hoot!
