Hey Everyone! I'm new here and I'm hoping you can help me out with a problem I'm having. My partner snores and it's driving me crazy!! It's coming to the point where I'm not able to sleep at night. I've talked to him about it and he's even talked to our doctor. We're both in our late 20's, normal body sizes, etc.. We've asked twice for a sleep study and the doctor's response is "lose 10 lbs". Well, he has and it's still continuing. I'm actually thinking it's hereditary because he's told me other family members are very loud snorers.

So, my question to all of you is this: How can we make the snoring stop? We've tried the breatheright strips on the nose, nasal spray (afrin), and a netti pot. Nothing seems to be working. I've now resorted to a fan for white noise and leaving the TV on at night. It worked for a little bit.. but, now it's not.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'll try anything!!! Thanks =)

Find another doctor, a sleep specialist would be best, and get a sleep study. Also if he drinks alcohol at night cut that out as it may help -may not. If the sleep study is normal then ENT doctors do have other methods to help just plain old snoring.

Time to see an ENT. Chances are that if he's lost the weight and the snoring persists, he's got an obstructive sleep apnea issue. He can continue to lose weight and that may help but usually persistent snoring is a combination of anatomical features- short neck, excess tissue around the neck and low tone in the muscles of the throat.

The short term solution will probably be CPAP which won't make it easier for you to sleep. The ENT can talk to the two of you about long term solutions.

They advertise on TV a mouth piece which allegedly stops snoring by moving the jaw forward. Google snoring and you will probably find it. I wear a mouthpiece for my teeth and it is easy to get used to.

^ those are supposed to work very good for certain types of snoring people. it depends on the cause of the snoring.

My partner use to have this trouble ..went to all kinds of doctors and still no way to get his snoring under control..Then one night our bedroom seemed really hot so I lower the thermostatt 70 and turned on a small fan directly on us...His snoring went from really loud to just above a whisper..I keep our home at 65 drgrees now and I can finally sleep..Not sure if this will help you but it worked for us>

My partner is a sleep specialist. Snoring of any sort is not healthy and it can cause so many health issues that it must be taken seriously; however, a lot of us don't give it a second thought. I don't want to get into all the details here, but I must insist that you see a proper doctor that can prescribe a sleep study, this type of test has become so mainstream that it can easily be done in the comfort of your own home with portable equipment that is very accurate. Because I have been around the field of sleep for over 25 years now (mostly through osmosis) once a person starts snoring there is very little that can be done to put a stop to it without the help of a professional, though losing weight is a good idea, the problem may not be your weight at all, there are some fit and skinny people that can snore like a bear and there are many other factors to consider. Sleep disorders can cause heart problems, high blood pressure, respiratory damage, brain damage, weight gain, etc... For you and for everyone else that has a snoring or sleep disorder out there, get the proper treatment and diagnosis from a qualified professional, your life might just depend on it. Best of luck.

Medical treatment is the best advice. But if you want to look at the mouthpiece, look ar trypuresleep.com.

Until proper medical advice can be given IRL, try getting him to sleep on his side.

I snore occasionally and found that sleeping on my side stops it. The main things that make me snore however are being seriously over-tired, alcohol and sleeping medication (such as restavit). The sleeping meds or pain meds usually give me sleep apnea if I stay on my back. Sleeping on my side removes a lot of these side effects, though I do not sleep as easy.

You probably won't like this solution but I think you should stop trying to solve his snoring problem and start to find a way to solve your sleeping problem. It probably depends a bit on how often you can't sleep, but the obvious approaches are to have a good set of ear plugs handy or to remove yourself to another room for sleeping.
