I've been reading on here for a while now, trying to muster up the courage to post one myself. So here's to hoping some of you like this story I'm working on.
My first time posting something I've written. Hope it's not too bad.
Passenger Seat
Chapter 1
It's another boring Thursday. I guess the rain is making it a little less than boring though. Or it could be that I'm staring out the window and day dreaming that's making this more tolerable. To be honest, I have a love-hate relationship with the rain.
Love the smell, and cold air it brings with it, but hate that it often enough cancels practice. Looks like today's practice will be cancelled
with this, and I've been needing to grip a bat all week. A tap on my shoulder startled me out of the nice sleepless dream of outside.
"Looks like practice is going to be cancelled again. This shit sucks. Fuckin' hate the rain dude."
That's Nathan for you, always finds a way to state the obvious to make you feel worse, and tops it of with that foul mouth of his.
"Yeah..looks that way." I replied.
"Someone needs to tell Ms. Sunshine it's a shitty day. I got nowhere near enough sleep to deal with her happy go lucky bullshit." stated Nathan.
He was ofcourse talking about Ms.Trenner. Our first period English teacher. She's just always way too happy and optimistic for most kids.
Which sort of makes sense, in a way. I guess stereotypicaly speaking, most kids in highschool hate just about everything, and want everything else.
Doesn't really bother me though, I'm a pretty stable highschool senior.
"Everyone break up into groups of 4, we'll be starting a new project which your group will be presenting in two weeks. Your goal will be to write a poem that describes one major aspect in your life so far." ordered Ms.Trenner..or Sunshine.
I turned my desk around to face Nathan since he sat right behind me at the back of the class. It wen't without saying that me and him would be a group, for three reasons that I could think of. He always yelled at other kids, no one in this class likes him, plus, theres a shortage of people in this class so me and him always made a two man group for any projects. By the time class ended the rain had gotten worse. It didn't rain here often, but when it did, this was usually the outcome. I have to admit though, walking in the rain calmed all my nerves. I always seemed to get to my next classes late when it rained. Always walked so much slower in the rain.
Third period was probably one of my favorites. Woodshop, it was easily one of the most interactive of my classes. Combine the smell of rain and sawdust, and I'm in heaven.
"Alright, let's get you guys to break off into two-man groups. You're going to collaborate on some designs." said Mr. Kalner. Apparently this was the week for projects. So it was me and Nathan again.
As I was trying to explain our plan for the project to Nathan, I could hear the classroom door open. Normally I don't pay much attention to things, but it couldn't be helped when I noticed the class grow silent. As I looked up even Nathan was caught in a quiet stare, which by the way, is near impossible to accomplish. I turned to my left to see what caught his eye behind me.
I could over hear some of the conversation between Mr. Kalner and the two kids who stood there.
"Oh ok new. So Just take a seat anywhere. Oh..well..we have a project starting right now. so..uhmm..Sit...hmm..where to put you?..Oh ok back there with the two with the varsity baseball jackets on." said Mr Kalner as he walked over to us.
Everything sorta seemed to slow down as I stared at the two new kids walking this way. A boy and a girl. The girl had long light brown hair with natural curls and waves sprinkled throughout, dark eyeshadow and thick liner decorated her light brown eyes, light red lipstick softened her lips. A chain with a small lock dangled around her neck. A tight leather jacket complete with buckles, that jingled with everystep, hugged her slender frame. A large studded belt gripped at her low rise black jeans that topped at the lower end of her hips revealing a bird tattoo on the left hip. Her tight fitting jeans tucked into boots that went up to the bottom of her knee. A natural Joan Jett heartbreaker if you ask me.
The boy had short black hair that I could barely see as his red sweater's hood covered most of it. He wore almost an identical leather jacket over his hoodie. He grabbed at a similar belt that held his pants up as they were starting to fall with his stride revealing a tad bit of bright red underwear. His black jeans were slightly less tight fitting than the girls, but not by much. Red chucks seemingly glowed along with the other hints of red that were peppered across his dark black attire. I looked back up to slowly lock with his caramel eyes. I immediatley turned back to Nathan who was still in awe.
"Looks like we get the new kids." I said to him.
"Yeah, but thats okay..that one is fuckin amazingly hot."he replied.
Which was a bit strange for Nathan. A lot of girls have tried to get with him and he's always just been un interested. I've heard him talk about certain girls before, but not very often. So it's kind of a big deal for him to be attracted to one.
"Kevin, Nathan. I'm going to put these two in your group. Let them observe when you use the saws, till I get new permission slips ready for them." Kalner said.
The two pulled up desks and tossed their folders on the desks as they sat down. Nathan and I stared at their folders as if we were studying animals.
Seeing these decorated folders took me back a bit. All these band names littered across them and quotes or lyrics across the other way.
"Hey, I'm Nathan and this is Kevin." said Nathan as he broke the silence and stuck his hand out for a shake.
The girl smirked and reciprocated. "I'm Zoey." she replied as she shook Nathan's hand and did a slight wave to me.
The boy just had his eyes closed and his head back with his arms folded.
I leaned in and stuck my hand out to him "Hey, welcome to Apollo High." but nothing, no reciprication like the girl, not even a glance at me. I have to admit
this was irritating, I didn't mind rude people, kind of use to it with Nathan, but I couldn't stand being ignored.
I guess it was noticable since Zoey said "Sorry, he's probably just trying to get some more sleep since we we're out late lastnight."
She nudged him in the arm and he slowly opened his eyes and realized everyone in our circle was staring at him. He sat up straight and reached into his hood with both hands pulling out earphones. Guess that explains why he 'ingored' me.
"Sorry, I'm Madison." he said as he extended a hand to mine to shake it. I became lost in thought as they touched. His hands were rough yet delicate, it was strange, just by a simple touch I felt as though I knew him. Rough on the palms and knuckles, but soft everywhere else.
The rest of the period was a blast once they showed up. Never a dull moment. Between the chuckles of Madison and I as we watched Nathan obviously trying to flirt with Zoey, and as she would shoot him down everytime, but even though she would show a distain for his efforts she always had a small smirk across her red lips. That smirk is something I soon realized Zoey and Madison shared. Madison's voice was soft. It had a soft rasp and innocence to it. Yet somehow, not so innocent. Their voices were similar. He was the male version of her, and she was the female version of him.
"Twins?! Oh cool, whats that like?" blurted Nathan.
Madison and Zoey had one eyebrow raised as they stared at him together.
"It's amazing, we can feel eachother's feelings and talk to eachother without even saying anything sometimes." exclaimed Zoey.
Nathan's eyes grew wide "Woah. Seriously?".
"No." stated Zoey.
Their conversations all ended that way, Nathan would ask some silly question and Zoey would entertain the thought with sarcasm, which Nathan obviously couldn't pick up on.
Just as I was about to have more one to one conversations with Madison, the bell rang.
"What's your next class?" asked Nathan to Zoey.
She pulled a crumpled paper out of her tight pockets "Looks like it's P.E.. Coach Gaines"
"Oh really?! I have Gaines right now too." Maybe Nathan should try to be slightly more discreet with his excitement.
"Greeaaat." replied Zoey. Poor girl, by the end of the day she's going to end up killing him.
After packing my bag I turned to ask Madison the same question Nathan asked his sister, but as I did, I found nothing. He was already leaving the class.
I packed quickly to catch up to him.
"Madison!" I shouted out, but no response.
"Hey!" I attempted again. Same outcome though. Then that shiny lightbulb lit up like in cartoons. The earphones.
I jogged up to him and nudged him in the shoulder and sure enough I was right, he pulled em out and turned to me, looking slightly up since now, with us standing, I could see he was shorter than me. If I had to guess I'd say he's probably about 5'6''.. At 5'9'' I had to slightly look down to him.
"What's up?" he asked.
"Was just going to help out the new kid ya know?..What's your next class?" I asked.
He opened his folder to pull out his transcript.
"Maddy!" a voice shouted.
Up came Zoey. She handed him a lighter "I know you'll probably throw a fit if I forgot to give it back. Do you have your cell on?"
He smiled and put the lighter in his jacket pocket and did a simple nod to let her know he did.
She walked away ever so calmly. I turned to see what his next class was and he too was already walking away.
I saw him walking the opposite way I needed to go and if I spent all my time getting him to class I'd obviously be late myself. I sat in the locker room thinking of the two new kids the whole time. Where were they from? What's their lastname? Who are their parents? Who's the older twin? And are they single?..That last question stuck with me almost all period. Not because I really dwelled on that one, more because it opened more questions. Why was I even thinking about that? Why were these two new kids so..interesting, so appealing, so..intoxicating?
Annoying whistle lets us know that it's time to head outside to fourth period P.E. I only needed two semesters of P.E. which i've already completed, but I decided to choose it as an elective this year
so I can stay in shape for baseball. As soon as we got stretched out, my coach got his class to start running laps. We ran around the football field which was at the back of the school by the back parking lot. I wasn't the only one on the baseball team to choose this an an elective.
There was me, Matt, Jason and Rory. We pretty much all looked exactly alike, aside from hair color and slightly different builds. Around the same height and basic build, except for Rory. He was the biggest out of us. He likes to claim he's 220lbs of pure muscle. Realistically he's probably 195 and mostly muscle.
"Anyone else smell cigarette smoke?" asked Matt during our jog.
We all looked around while running and out of the corner of my eye I saw Madison walking in from the parking lot to the field.
He had that calm 'I dont give a fuck' walk going and a lit cigarette he was passing from his hand to his mouth.
"Who the hell is that guy?" questioned Rory.
"He's the new kid. He's in my third." I stated, and to be honest. I think a part of me was proud that I knew that much and could say it. I seperated from my group to run to him. As I crossed the wet grass it sent chills up my legs. I'm not sure if it was from getting to talk to him again or from the cold water left behind from the morning rain hitting the back of my bare legs. I don't know if it was because the sun was out now or because I was more awake than earlier, or even because his hood was off, but he looked so different now. He seemed more aware and far more interactive than earlier. He licked his dry lips and pulled his cigarette up to them as I got up to him.
"Did you get lost or something?" I asked.
He turned his head and blew out a slow billowing cloud of smoke. I honestly don't like cigarettes. Hate the way they smell, but for some reason, the way he blew it out made it look appetizing. Barely even moving his lips to form that "O" shape made it seem so effortless for him. The way the sun glistened off his freshly licked lips. Or maybe it was because he had soft facial features, or maybe even the way that his eyes lit up in the sunlight, making them a very light golden brown.
Turning back to me he said "Something like that." and there was that smirk. The one his sister had, the one that drove Nathan crazy.
"Well just don't let my coach catch you, he just quit smoking a week ago, he's been wanting one so bad he'd probably rip your clothes off looking for one." I laughed as I said.
He raised one eyebrow as he inhaled another puff.
"That sounded kinda creepy didn't it?" I asked while awkwardly laughing. "My mind was somewhere else I think."
He turned and blew out again. He slightly leaned in and with an eyebrow still raised he said "Did you like where your mind was?"
"What?.. uh. I uh.." was all I could muster out.
He lowered his eyebrow and did that smirk. "Don't worry, just messing with you." He tossed his cigarette and started to walk past me.
I have to admit that what he said still had me in shock. I stood there for a few seconds trying to collect myself.
"Catch ya later Red." he said as he walked backwards looking at me.
"Red?" I whispered to myself. Oh right..'cause of my red hair.
