I don't have much empathy for bigots who judge entire populations in a single stroke. But neither for idealists who refuse to see some cultures and religions are far behind on others. So I love to hear them debate. I agree with both, just not at the same time.

This statue is in the Louvre and Wiki says it has been partly restored but I can't figure what they've done with the eye sockets.

I've seen other statues where the sculptor has omitted the eyes and had empty eye sockets.

Probably glass, although with marble I'm more accustomed to seeing blank eyes with no articulation but which would have been painted. With bronze, the eyes are always added in another material.

On second thought, I assume that the statue was restored and perhaps altered in the 17th century and at that time the smooth blank eyes were cut in the manner of the period, with articulated retinas. Later restorers thought the eyes incompatible with the original, and cut them out.
