Drug addiction needs to lose its negative criminalization, so that these people can proudly get help in the open...

He wasn't just talking about celebrities. Also, I'd suggest therapy for people who've no idea why they're using to find the root of the problem after they're clean and get rid of it, if at all possible. For celebrities, I suspect for quite a few of them it would be their careers and all the media attention. Not everyone can handle a spotlight with good mental health. In the end, one spotlight isn't much different from another and money doesn't change its affect.

It's a sad death, but I don't see how it's a tragedy. Heroin destroyed Layne Staley, but other than his musical gift, no one is really calling the way he died "tragic". He chose the drugs. He shut himself off, he refused help even when anyone with two working eyes could see he had a BIG problem.

And, to agree with an earlier post, celebs and celebutantes have a much easier time getting help should they want it - and we love a good "redemption" story, so the stigma of being an addict wouldn't phase someone in the public eye so much as it would an average or below average person, like, say, me.

It was an accident.

The lesson here may not be "don't shoot up on heroin", but "don't shoot up on street heroin because it is of variable quality and your habitual dose may kill you if you get hold of a batch that's better than you're used to."

I get why people get hooked on heroin...only tried it once and it scared me how beautiful of an escape it was (after I threw up)....I remember thinking as I was floating on air that I knew why people "needed" it...

Addiction is a serious disease and should be treated as such. Overcoming addiction is impossible for some people because in order to overcome it there is one essential ingredient...you have to want to. Some people do not want to come back because it is too painful for them...I have a lot of empathy for them. There But For The Grace of God Go I.

They'd probably have used drugs together at some point. Also, according to the BBC article, one of the reasons she ODed is that she was on methadone and her heroin tolerance had gone down.
