Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) attributed Republicans' exit from deficit talks on their refusal to budge on tax cuts and said their intransigence on the issue threatened to derail a deal.

Pelosi and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the ranking member of the Budget Committee, said at a press conference that they were told of Cantor's exit only after they left a morning meeting at the White House on the debt ceiling vote.

"We left the meeting to find that Leader Cantor had walked out of the meetings....because Democrats want to raise taxes," Pelosi said. "Yes, we do want to remove tax subsidies from big oil, we want to remove tax breaks from corporations that send jobs overseas. That list goes on."

what amazes me is that this is the debt ceiling negotiations, not even the budget yet. Do these people know how to legislate anymore?

later down in the article, there is a bit of light on how the inner GOP power struggle is hampering the work.

..... were making significant progress and indicated that the current sticking points were merely beyond his authority to negotiate without Speaker Boehner's participation. Reading between the lines, the suggestion was that he wasn't blowing up the talks at all -- one might even speculate that Republicans were budging from their no-taxes position, but needed Boehner's approval to clear the way forward forward.

That idea seemed dashed, however, as Boehner doubled down on his anti-tax rhetoric on Thursday, redrawing his party's line in the sand.

But Boehner's intransigence fed into a third possible narrative of a behind-the-scenes power struggle in the House GOP, in which Cantor deliberately is tagging in the Speaker to complete the politically unpopular task of conceding tax increases necessary to secure any major deal. Boehner did little to tamp down speculation.....

so if the GOP leadership is treating this like a hot potato, why can't they see they are on the wrong side of the issue.

When you are so committed to a political course, that you do it, knowing it is against your constituents wishes and interests, and that there will be political lashback...

Well why do it at all? It makes no sense. It is once again obstruction of the functioning of government.

It is once again obstruction of the functioning of government.

Just like little kid at the candy store.

But very effective obstructionism/childishness.

The Democrats will cave on this issue and give Republicans everything they want. No matter that this will harm the nation seriously.

Republicans get what they want when they are in power, and they get what they want when they are not in power.

Indeed, the Democrats show no spine in standing up to the Republicians. They will get their way on this in the end.

I think you're right, but I hope you're wrong. Another way of putting it: "Republicans fall in line - Democrats fall down.
Not only is Cantor a son-of-a-bitch, but he want's Boner's job too!

I think the repubs are going to have to agree to remove some tax exemptions and tax loopholes in the code this time guys.

Wait and see
