Pennies here are not copper plated zinc because if they were pure copper (like the old ones), the metal would be more valuable than a penny. The government has tried to get rid of pennies, but the Zinc lobby will not permit it. Contrary to popular belief, lobbies are what determine many laws in this country - not the will or the good of the people.

I didn't know that about the Zinc lobby. Didn't even know they existed. Obviously they have a great stake in this.

I meant to say that pennies are NOT copper, but instead are copper plated zinc!
