People of Lesbos take gay group to court over term 'Lesbian'

By NICHOLAS PAPHITIS, Associated Press Writer Wed Apr 30, 5:04 PM ET

ATHENS, Greece - A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.

Three islanders from Lesbos — home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women — have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.

One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.

"My sister can't say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou. "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said.

The three plaintiffs are seeking to have the group barred from using "lesbian" in its name and filed a lawsuit on April 10. The other two plaintiffs are women.
Also called Mytilene, after its capital, Lesbos is famed as the birthplace of Sappho. The island is a favored holiday destination for gay women, particularly the lyric poet's reputed home town of Eressos.

"This is not an aggressive act against gay women," Lambrou said. "Let them visit Lesbos and get married and whatever they like. We just want (the group) to remove the word lesbian from their title."

He said the plaintiffs targeted the group because it is the only officially registered gay group in Greece to use the word lesbian in its name. The case will be heard in an Athens court on June 10.

Sappho lived from the late 7th to the early 6th century B.C. and is considered one of the greatest poets of antiquity. Many of her poems, written in the first person and intended to be accompanied by music, contain passionate references to love for other women.

Lambrou said the word lesbian has only been linked with gay women in the past few decades. "But we have been Lesbians for thousands of years," said Lambrou, who publishes a small magazine on ancient Greek religion and technology that frequently criticizes the Christian Church.

Very little is known of Sappho's life. According to some ancient accounts, she was an aristocrat who married a rich merchant and had a daughter with him. One tradition says that she killed herself by jumping off a cliff over an unhappy love affair.

Lambrou says Sappho was not gay. "But even if we assume she was, how can 250,000 people of Lesbian descent — including women — be considered homosexual?"

The Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece could not be reached for comment.

Come on Dreu, come back and give us your opinion....curious...and we miss you.

I'm sorry metta, but I have to... ;)

OK, continue with the on-topic discussion :D

I've always thought it was strange that gay women have their own special name, anyway. Why can't they just be gay like us?

The Greek island of Lesbos is more commonly known to Greeks as the island of Mytilini. Although Greeks recognise Lesbos as the alternative name, we prefer to use the name Mytilini.

The instigator of this action (there are three plaintiffs) is Dimitris Lambrou, a self confessed activist on behalf of the Hellenistic period of Greek history (some 2500 years ago), who publishes a periodical (Davlos) for the purpose of advocating his manic devotion to the glories of ancient Greece. He is even a devotee of the ancient Greek deities.

Clearly this is a frivilous suit which hopefully will be dismissed by the Athens Court of First Instance. For the Greek courts are creaking under the strain of too much work to support a nuisance action.

One of the grandees of the Greek gay organisation (The Gay and Lesbian Community of Greece) is a well known lawyer, television personality and high profile journalist, who hopefully will make an appearance in court to defend the right of the Greek gay community to use the word lesbian.

I suspect that Mr Lambou might well be characterised as an eccentric, chasing fame and celebrity status.

The advertising should be positive for the tourist industry of Mytilini/Lesbos, a delightful, green, traditional Greek island that has not been spoilt by the ravages of mass tourism and concrete exploitation. There is even a popular (for the many gay tourists) gay bar in the island's principle town.

"Davlos" magazine can be accessed here:

Reminds me of the time I burst into an uncontrollable fit of the giggles after my Greek prof referred to Alcaeus as a Lesbian farmer. Good times.

It's reassuring/disturbing to know that America isn't the only place people file really stupid and frivolous lawsuits.

High quality ouzo is one of the big exports of Mytilini. Delicious sweet delicacies are also count as another attraction. But beware of accumulating too much weight!!

Are they the same people who tried to sue that director of Alexander, because they mentioned the fact he was a 'littile' gay.

Wasn't he 'a little gay'? I could have sworn he was bi or something, or had homosexual tenancies.

I've always thought it was strange that gay women have their own special name, anyway. Why can't they just be gay like us?

That's what I want to know. It's almost as if, as a combined whole, we're Homosexuals, and we have 'sub-types' as Lesbian and Gay.

Lesbos is a lovely island -- went there four years ago and have wanted to go back ever since.

Mytilene impressed me as a university town, of all things; great internet shop off the main street, nice bedsit with an apricot tree outside, and, best of all, a few miles out of the main port town there is an ancient hot water spa that is great for the skin: and requires same-sex segregation and nudity! Saw some hot locals there, although they obviously sneered at us tourists for looking.

One image in my mind is the very large "Lesbian Hotel" across the port :D

I agree this must be good publicity -- let's hope the activists don't go so far as to ruin its charm (which comes, as a previous poster said, from being outside the main tourist runs).

BTW: what is the name of the gay bar? Went to several along the main strip, and they all seemed possibly to have a gay clientele, but, alas, I'm no longer the late night party animal as seems to be required to enjoy Greek bars to their fullest.
