Pessimist or Optimist?

Is the glass half empty or half full?

as my honey says...

if you only filled it half way ---it's half full

if you filled it full and took some out ------it's half empty.

I consider myself neither. I'm more of a realist. Unfortunately that tends to lean toward cynicism and pessimism considering the lot in life I'm currently dealing with.

If it started off full, and you drank half of it, it's half empty.
if you only poured it half way, it's half full.

I hate nothing more than the mandatory phoney optimism that seems to be prevalent in American society today, but I chose the "selfloathing eldergay" option because it appealed more to me.

Constructive pessimist. I make sure nothing gets in the way of what needs to happen where possible.

Can you explain by giving examples? Not sure I get the meaning. Mandated by what/whom, phony how, etc.?

The most blatant examle are motivational speakers and televangelists. Then there's the habit of buying things on credit for which Americans are infamous. The 'optimism' is mandated because the desire for mindless wellfeeling is convenient to the wallets of those who preach it. It's phony because it leads them to do things like take out mortgages they can't afford or get loans for worthless college educations that they probably could never pay back...

Optimist definitely.

I don't get along well with pessimists tbh. No offense to any of them, if there's any offense in that statement anyway.

I am a pessimist. I am sorry Kien, it appears that we won't get along :(

I'm totally a glass half-full optimist. I don't like to beat myself down before something negative even happened.

So my choice is being an upper all the time, or a downer all the time?

I choose neither; it's not realistic.

I don't like water so I'm not answering anything

But, one of the chief objections to televangelists is their negative view of the world. They rail against society and solicit donations to help them stay on the air to fight the vices they decry. Would that not be pessimistic?

I didn't mean those. I meant the "pray and you shall recieve" televangelists who barely mention sin at all.

I'm not buying the mantra of late that college educations are worthless. If people are indeed educated, and learned rather than just cramming for tests, then they are better off. They have sharpened their thinking skills, learned to discriminate important facts from drivel, and studied people not like themselves. If they have only gone for vocational training, then I concur that they may have wasted their time, as college is not necessary to be successful in employment.

I didn't say that they were all worthless, although some of them are certainly less than worthless.

The credit observation is accurate, although less so of late than previously.

I'm sure you know your country better than I do, but my NY friend thinks that the credit limit of credit card can be used as a means of social security.

The mortgage barb is not an American distinctive. Europe is drowning in the waves of collapse that resulted when the housing bubble burst. We are a wealthy nation, so our fall may be more entertaining and satisfying to watch, but Europe was hardly parsimonious in the runup to the mortgage crisis.

I think you'll find that there are few nations where so many people with such low income and such low job security could borrow so much.
In the Netherlands, most people with a job aren't even eligible for mortgages, before, during and after the Subprime Mortgage Crisis.

The proper term is "bitter queen": the ones that have given up any hope of finding love and get jealous of anyone that shows affection.

I tend to lean towards pessimism just because I am an accountant and we have to scrutinize. An optimistic accountant, at least professionally, is counter-intuitive. Personally, I am much more optimistic, especially with my BF.

Recently I've been told by a couple of co-workers that I'm the most optomistic person they've ever met. Bwaa haa haa!!! Man if they only knew. I play the game well but really, I've been shit on so much these past few years, I'm just praying for the end of the world.

Day to day, inside I'm an optimal pessimist, but I'm really trying to look at the big picture of my life and I hope for the best. But I'm also a fatalist. I believe that what is meant to be, will be. It's already preordained.
