I drove three hours (round trip) late last night to save my Sieberian Huksy. She ate an entire pack of Trident sugar free gum, watermelon. Trident has something called Xylitol that can kill your dog by causing it to have hypoglocemia. When I googled this, the first thing I read was your dog can die if not treated immediately. Luckily, Kodi weighs 60 pounds. The vet mentioned smaller dogs have died in her arms from this drug. I called the dog emergency number and connected with a very helpful operator/vet assistant who was extremely knowledgeable.

I live in a small town and there are no after hours emergency pet care clinics any where near my residence. After speaking to 2 vets, I decided this was life and death and took Kodi to a 24 pet emergency clinic 90 mins. away. They gave her a morphine mix to induce vomiting and wanted to keep her overnight.

I ended up taking her home and feeding her every two hours to make sure her blood sugar did not drop. Kodi is fine now, I think. Thank heavens! I am willing to initiate a movement to get an emergency clinic built in our area.

Beware of this deadly gum!

Glad to hear she is okay.

We are so lucky to have 24 hour centre about 10 minutes away from us....but they are very rare out in the country...I'm sure that was a terrible 90 minute ride for you.

From now on...only give her gum with sugar.

Wow helpful information. Did you tell her you can live with her bad breath?:p

In some situations you can induce vomiting by feeding hydrogen peroxide. Once, one of my dogs walked up from the basement smacking his lips greedily, clogged with green rat poison pellets. I checked with a poison control resource, fed him the peroxide and about 10 minutes later he barfed up the lot. Then, he got a fat dose of charcoal and a month's course of vitamin K.

90 minutes to the emergency room sucks. Mine is only ten minutes away, but the drive is always bad.

Good point Zolt. That's why I was torn. I was told I could pour Hydrogen Peroxide on bread a feed it to Kodi to induce vomiting. But once I heard death was possible, it seemed logical to go for professional help, no matter how far away it was. The awesome vet kept checking her blood sugar levels, which I could not have done at home.

I'm going out for some hydrogen peroxide to have around the house, just in case...

I'm glad your dog is OK!

The thing that worries me about sugarless gum is... what do they replace the sugar with?

What the hell are yall doing to your pets? Not letting a dog eat a piece of gum let alone a whole pack is an obvious no no, you wouldn't let a baby eat an entire pack of gum would you??? the correct answer is no fyi, you wouldn't.

I am glad your dog is Okay, I am assuming that the dog got to the pack of gum and the OP did not feed it to the dog directly. We really have to be mindful of what we leave laying around when it comes to Pets and Children.

Luckily it is easier with our Cat because she turns her head up when it comes to human food. She does not even eat cat treats, just her food and Cat grass.

Which I would like to note when it comes to Cats do not feed them Tuna that isn't intended for Cats. If you feed them too much of it they can get sick, I remember reading it before but I forgot what is in Tuna made for humans that Cats can't have too much of.

People really should stick to food that is intended for the animals, there is a reason these foods exist and we are even luckier now that we live in a world where there are plenty of brands of foods that cater to many dog/cat breeds as well as food allergies, etc.

I don't know about cats, but commercial dog food is almost entirely crap.

^Yes, when you are talking about Pedigree Brands, Iams and a couple of others, that stuff for either cats or dogs is basically fast food. There are Brands that don't have the filler that those brands have and don't have artificial ingredients, coloring and all that.

Let's clear this up--I did not feed any gum to my dog. I left a pack on my counter top in the kitchen and she got into it. I should have been more specific in the OP. Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows they get into things they are not supposed to.

Lesson learned...

Good to know.
There are lots of common household items that are toxic to pets. Baking soda in cat litter will cause your dog's stomach to explode.
Many houseplants are poisonous and can cause vomiting or internal bleeding.

If your dog is a 'bored chewer' or maybe just likes to taste things, it would be best to get him a kennel for times when he is alone.

There's the culprit.

I am glad your dog is doing well. I know exactly how you feel, we had to take Mayson to our Vet in the early hours a few weeks ago.
A scary time.

Good news that your dog is OK. They will eat a lot of things which are bad for them if they get the oppotunity, so a valuable lesson learned as you say. Another good emetic, should this happen again, is mustard. Mix up the powdered variety into something strong and runny and force the dog to swallow as much as possible.

hahahaha

absolutely....I have no idea what goes through a dog's head.

Except...'I could eat that'.

I am amazed that you put everything together and got the necessary answers, when the clock was ticking, in time to save your dog's life. It must have been a super-stressful few hours. The right moves, the right people, with the right skills and answers. Amazing!

Thanks a lot! One vet was pretty adamant that I needed to bring her in, I spent almost an hour debating what to do. As you said very stressful. One friend wasn't convinced that Kodi ate ALL the gum, but there were no traces of it anywhere.

I'm sure my dog would do the same for me...LOL.

Siberian Huskies are such beautiful dogs -- I am so glad that Kodi is OK...

And that you were able to act so well in emergency circumstances...

Thanks for passing along the information -- Never heard of this...

Give her a hug from all of us here...
