Do you have a favourite meal you always get when you visit the pub.

Pub grub, what do you like ?

My fave is the traditional fish and chips.

If it didn't have bug-eyes, it'd look like a cock.

What's the green stuff?

Faux guacamole.

I'm not a regular at pubs, but the best I can recall having was a Reuben Egg Roll on St. Patrick's Day in Albuquerque with a friend. Normally I am opposed to fusion cuisine, but the combination really worked in this case.

I haven't been to a pup or bar in many years, but back in the day the preferred nibble snacks were Buffalo chicken wings or fried jalapeno cheese sticks...those foods were generally a treat as I didn't eat them often

hmmmmm…...Reuben egg rolls sound doable...I'm thinking drained kraut, diced pastrami/corned beef, some grated swiss, w/a touch of good brown mustard, maybe a pinch of caraway seed...all rolled up in an egg roll wrapper and baked or fried

if fried, they might need to be frozen a little first so the cheese doesn't run out before the wrappers get good and browned ( that's what I do with my fried cheese won tons and pepperoni mozzarella rolls )

I used to make Reuben pizzas w/ homemade rye bread crust; been a few years..

There is a pub in Edinburgh called The Regents, not only do they serve real ale, but their Sunday lunches are really top notch. I believe that it is the only gay bar that serves real ale in Edinburgh

My local "pub" has a restaurant attached to the lounge. If one doesn't desire the pub atmosphere, they have a nice dining room, too!

My food of choice...a mushroom and Swiss cheese burger with french fries!

I went to a couple of gay bars when I was in Edinburgh last year. One was CC Blooms, the other was a more down-market place more or less next door. Don't recall The Regents. Maybe next time.

I usually seem to order some version of chicken and chips.

Tacos don’t seem very appetising; like vomit filled rolls with raw veg.

But tacos aren't rolls. They are either soft tortillas or crunchy, depending upon the style.

And the filling is just about anything, but the popularized version is ground beef with chili seasonings. It's very appealing. The bit of lettuce, onion, peppers and tomato on top are to give a fresh contrast to the heavier and greasy filling.

Vomit is usually milky and loose, nothing like taco filling.

You should get a friend who knows Mexican cuisine to show you a good place. You'll be a convert in no time.

These are the TexMex style (Mexicans don't often eat the crispy shelled variety):

These are more authentic Mexican tacos served on soft tortillas, often filled with pork and often bland until you add peppers:

And then the restaurants go overboard with shrimp or fish, which is grilled and delicious:

I am sorry, you haven’t convinced me; they all look disgusting.

Probably because I am culturally geared towards a totally different kind of food.

/\ They look like the scrapings from dirty dishes. :)

And very messy. I don't eat 'finger food'. Particularly stuff that is sure to fall apart.

And, what is the purpose of scorching the lime wedge? To add visual appeal and carcinogens?

The grilling of lemons and limes has become a chef fad, like hummus, and beets, and kale, and, and, and.

Julia Child said something to the effect of "the only thing I have against grilled vegetables is first they are burnt, and then they are raw."

It is all so easy to disparage that which we want to dislike. After all, no one could look at escargot, or pate, or caviar and say that they looked like food unless one were accustomed to eating fresh road kill.

Foods generally only look appetizing because we've developed an appetite for those foods, hence you have vegans declaring how repulsive a Porterhouse is, Europeans declaring that crickets in Mexico are disgusting, and small children horrified at the look of sausages hanging in a meat market. And, we all love eggs, but watching one delivered between episodes of chicken shit doesn't make it innately appealing.

I'm fine with everyone having different tastes, but the thread was about favorite pub foods, when suddenly, without an antecedent, comes a post about alleged vomit. I think I'd pay to see someone vomit ground beef and chopped tomatoes. I'm sure there are museums that would cherish the modern art if I took a pic.

I just find it peculiar that these sloppy finger foods are so popular where people gather to socialize, and often, 'hook up'.

Now days, people no longer have to go home smelling like an ashtray, instead, they go home with greasy fingers and sauce stained mugs smelling like a dirty deed fryer.

It's not charming. :)

That sounds like a pub called Habanas, then a few feet away is Planet, usually filled with "the young in crowd". I would recommend The Regent to you if you enjoy a really decent real ale. They also "host" a different real ale each month, apart from the ones they always have on tap. A very welcoming pub without the pretentious nonsense you tend to find in the bars frequented by the more "effeminate" crowd and their gaggle of female hangers-on.
