Okay. If that helps you sleep better at night...

Copy without permission = ?

Piracy is a war-like act committed by non-state actors against parties of a different nationality.
Piracy is wrong word to use for copyrighted stuff.

I'd like to see proper, unbiased stats on the impact of piracy on the music/movie/games market.

I'm pretty sure there must be some impact, but I don't think it's as big as some people would have us believe. I suspect the bulk of people with tons of pirated stuff only have it because it was free and wouldn't have bought it anyway, so I don't think there are too many lost sales in it.

I personally have loads of pirated audio material, but I'm still buying the same amount of CDs and dvds as I was before file-sharing and disc-copying was do-able at home.

As it is, we still can't buy audio downloads here in .za - iTunes won't accept .za issued credit cards and there are licencing issues for everything except .za artists; likewise Amazon's mp3 store, so we can't yet just purchase a song if we don't want the album, and that's where the piracy creeps in, in my case - hear something you like, go get a few tracks off the album from the internet to listen to and if I like them then I'll buy the album. If I don't, well, bad luck; but I'm not deleting the ones I've downloaded that I do like, though. If that got sorted out, of course, and I could buy what I wanted off the web it would be a non-issue.

I'm inclined to agree with this. I pirate a lot of music with video -> mp3 programs on Youtube. I listen to quite a niche genre though, so if ever there's a tune that I really like, I buy it. I'm always up for supporting upcoming artists, and my favorites too, but it's not like I would go out and buy every song I've ever downloaded were they not available through piracy.

I think it has a bigger affect on movies than music, though. Usually if a movie was coming out and it'd generated an average amount of hype, depending if my friends wanted to go see it, I would. Nowadays if it looks okay, I'll just download it and save myself $15.

I do feel a little guilty when I really think about it, and how much I would hate to work on something and have people easily get it for free, but I guess I'm just a little too selfish :help:

^I still enjoy the movie experience - big screens, surround sound etc. I have only 2 pirated films in my collection; neither were available to buy as a Zone 2 release in .za, so I had to knock them off from a mate's Zone 1 copy and burn a Zone 0 copy so I could watch them.

Still neither are available to this day here.

if you are spending all your money and have none left over and then you copy a movie or song how is there a loss of revenue involved ? if you bought all the music you could budget for and then copied more what money are they missing out on ?
just one angle on the consumer economy , you can only spend what you got ( of course we could all get credit cards and live in constant perpetual debt so that we could consume more than we could afford , but that would just be stupid , right?

Its because alot of people dont think of piracy as stealing. One reason is because its simply not physical.

However much you've illegally downloaded, I challenge you to walk into music/dvd stores and shoplift the exact same amount. Then you'd understand the full gravity of the impact of piracy.
Here in the UK our main chain music/dvd stores have all closed down except for one, and they're closing down stores up and down the country one by one now.

I know that the record companies have been having trouble for years, as well as artists trying to sell their music. I don't DL music because there is nothing worth downloading. All my favorite music is from the 80's and I have all of it on CD.

The porn business is suffering, more so than the movie industry. But much of it is available to stream online anyway, you don't even have to DL it.

and it's true, it's stuff that most people wouldn't buy anyway.

that's not because of piracy, that's because physical media is becoming obsolete. people read news on the internet, they buy music on itunes, and they get movies with netflix.

and your point about shoplifting completely ignores the entire point of this thread ](*,)

I'm a passionate gamer so I have no pirated copies of games. I like supporting game developers for their work in giving me hours upon hours of entertainment. I'm also pretty passionate about film and movies. Occasionally I'll pirate a movie, but only after already seeing it in theater. They're temporary as well since I'll buy the DVD/Blu-Ray release soon as I can.

Music.... is a whole different matter xD

Well I don't think anyone has a problem with buying music off of iTunes or paying for netflix and getting movies that way.

It's the part where you don't pay for things you download that bothers some people.

where are all these starving actors ? oh look , brad pitt looks like he's losing weight !
I saw angelina lining up at a soup kitchen the other day !
I still support artists and actors , I buy CDs and go to the cinema , but there is no need for these people to be filthy rich , whats that ? did someone say " we better keep them loaded or they might go back to their day job !" i dont think so .
Shops may be closing because things are going online , it just means that the method of retail is changing.

Virgin, that was renamed to Zavvi for reasons of madness, went bust because of Woolworths going bust which wasn't to do with piracy. Only other main chain that I remember closing down here is MVC, but that was to do with competing with Virgin Megastore and HMV than piracy, but that also happening a long time ago now, before the music chains were having problems. However while Zavvi is no longer on the streets it is online.

Actually the better analogy, as demonstrated by the picture in the first post, is going round a friends house who has the CD that you want and copying it onto a blank disc. Thats assuming that the person who's put the song on the internet first bought it ...

I pirate music. Bite me.

I don't pirate games though. Used to do movies, but I just don't watch them as much anymore.

send me a copy of your credit card

when I use it to buy something you can decide whether or not its stealing.

i'll never understand this.

the music, movies, book,s etc...that you're "copying" are the product of months, maybe even years work.

but according to many here, that work doesn't deserve reward.

and to top it all off, you claim to be "fans?"

really???
