Long story short, I was on a chat site (chatropolis.com - it's dirty I'm never going on again) and met a guy and the chat transferred over to yahoo messenger.

After a while of chatting, the guy turned super creepy and threatened me by saying he has time stamps, dates and my IP address of when we talked and I think is threatening to out me.

This guy just talked fucking weird and seemed like a psycho. I feel that he can easily hurt me online by hacking something like facebook or financial sites that my parents use.

I use Rogers service provider and when I called them to change my IP address the said it's static and they can't. They said I would be fine with a firewall.

What do you think I should do? I was roleplaying with this guy but I don't think he knew it was roleplaying after all and started taking me seriously and threatening me to tell people. I didn't do anything illegal. I had to make up some story to get out of that chat and now he expects me to come back.

How the hell do I protect myself? If my family finds out about this I'm dead. I'm feeling anxiety over this, I didn't sleep last night.

ASAP answers please or via PM.

Thank you so much.

Remain calm. Breathe. Block this person on IM.

It is unlikely he'll be able to pinpoint who you are and where you live. With that said, I doubt he can hack anything.

What personal information did you give him? Name? Address? Phone number?

No info at all. Should I not even log on to messenger again to block him?

He expects me back and I kind of have a story set up to make the next time we talk the last but my friend thinks don't bother going back.

My biggest fear is not him hacking my computer and messing my computer but posting our conversation and other people seeing it.

Which messenger are you using?

But, yes, login and block him.

I haven't really tried, but short of someone who really know how to find the info, I think it's rather difficult to get someone's IP whilst chatting.

I wouldn't give this creep another thought.

I don't want to either and I don't think I will. We chatted twice. The first time I just logged off and when I logged on is when I got the threatening message send to me a paragraph long. I chatted to him an hour after that which made him calm down.

The world is full of creepy people. Just use caution in future when chatting with guys. Do block him in Yahoo IM. I had to do that recently and it is very easy. Cheers!

All HE can do with your IP is find the location of your ISP.........which is probably miles and MILES away.
Check it yourself to put yourself at ease: http://network-tools.com/

YOUR IP will be in the window.....just hit go....... ;)

Yeah I definitely learned a life lesson. It doesn't help that I have anxiety attacks over this shit.

Thanks bud but to block him won't I have to log back on and he'll see me? Maybe I shouldn't log back on at all.

Log in and block in quickly. He may briefly see you're online. So what. Just ignore him.

I looked mine up and it was just the building of the ISP that is far from where I live.

You helped me be at ease, thank you.

Is there any other way he can hack my computer with my IP or from the time he talked to me through yahoo messenger and should I change my IP address? Wouldn't he see the exact same thing as before?

By the way.......there are settings in all the IM aps that you can set to log in as invisible....... ;)

Unless you transferred files to him, there's no way he could even have your IP address. In chat mode, you never connect to him directly, just to the yahoo server.

If this is true then I'm fine. I'm over it now. I just went through the fear of being outed which I'm sure everyone here is aware of.

It doesn't matter if he sees you or not...u don't have to interact with him. Just log in, block him and u can wash your hands of him.

That is true but unning a netstat/ -a command will show all the current ip's in use.
If the messaging program is the only one active on the ethernet all the ip's in use will be returned.
I'm not writing this to make you nervous again Kensei as I SERIOUSLY doubt "your guy" would have a clue. And as you have cut off communications with him he doesn't stand a chance anyway and, AGAIN, the end result would be the same.
ONLY the physical location of your ISP would be revealed.
BTW.......tracking down Yahoo IP's is nearly impossible if NOT impossible....... (!)

^ that'll only work when a direct connection is made to the user.

Other than that, all goes through yahoo.

So he could pretty much just see my ISP which is across town?
