Please help me with my IP address. I'm being outed.

Other than that, all goes through yahoo.

are you sure of that? usually only offline messages or messages to invisible users go through the service provider. depends on the protocol of course.

but even if he has the IP .. there isn't much that he can do with it.

I'm not 100% sure, but it was my understanding that with the exception of file transfers (http) and webcam (h323) everything routes through Yahoo's servers (including requests for the excluded transfers.)

Altho I agree there seems to be no way you can identify another persons IP address when connected to Yahoo. One chat site I have used in the past shows the IP adddress of of those logging on. However knowing some ones IP adddress does not identify the location of the user except to the ISP. So no real problem.
As far as Yahoo is concerned always log on in the 'invisible to everyone ' mode. Then you can Block any of your Contacts without appearing to be on-line.

Well I tried to change my IP address by unplugging and releasing my ip address through cmd prompt but it didn't work even after leaving everything off all night unplugged and /renewing the this afternoon.

The guy had typo's sometimes. He used caps a lot as if he was yelling at me and he kept hinting at weird things like he was being hunted by law enforcement and the he can't be caught. The second I read that I wanted to get the hell out of there and talked my way into leaving.

I made a yahoo account just to talk to him. I don't ever plan on logging back on or logging into that email again. It was all made up.

I just hope he's not a super hacker and twisted at the same time.

He's not a super hacker.

I've always held the following true:

Those who know, don't talk. Those who talk, don't know.

That is true but unning a netstat/ -a command will show all the current ip's in use.
If the messaging program is the only one active on the ethernet all the ip's in use will be returned.
I'm not writing this to make you nervous again Kensei as I SERIOUSLY doubt "your guy" would have a clue. And as you have cut off communications with him he doesn't stand a chance anyway and, AGAIN, the end result would be the same.
ONLY the physical location of your ISP would be revealed.
BTW.......tracking down Yahoo IP's is nearly impossible if NOT impossible....... (!)

Again though, unless you transfer files or photos, the IPs returned will be the yahoo chat server, not the other peer's.

Only file sharing or photo sharing or webcams etc does a peer to peer connection.

With yahoo peer to peer connections are only used for large data communications.

http://www.astahost.com/info.php/Yahoo33-Protocol-Part-10-Peer-Peer-Transfers_t11490.html

There are other protocols like Skype that use them for all communication.

So he's bullshitting?

Also, I know this seems over the top by now, but if someone is hacking you (which my friend explained takes hours to do) and you shut off your router, would they have to start over again?

If that's the case I'll shut my router off every hour... lol.

^ It is unlikely your router will accept connections of that sort from the WAN.

So he's bullshitting?

Kensei.......ONLY legal agencies can FORCE an ISP to track down records and they need a DAMN good reason to do so.
Your "buddy" would be in DEEP fucking trouble delivering threats or trying to blackmail you via whatever.....
Chill....... ;)

Save records of the chat. They constitute evidence in case he tries again to implement this threat.

He is likely only able to stir up shit and use fear against you. But I keep records of the crazies that have blown through my life.

geez ... the last time that i could scare someone with "i have you ip" was some kid in an irc chat room ~ 1998 or so.

now calm down!

i have your ip, too by the way

Speaking of legal, I remembered that I told him of the time I had a boyfriend when I was in highschool still. I was 19 and he was 17 and it was kind of my first love.

I can't get in trouble for him reporting that can I? How long of a shot is that? >.>

Not to worry.

From what you've said, he has no identifiable information about you. But, on the legal side, you've two things going-on from the get-go: 1) 17 may be legal in your state 2) perhaps the statue of limitations has expired.

It's not legal here but it was years ago.

I've always held the following true:

I agree.

One thing though as regards to the basics of screen shots. Anyone can make screenshots of a chat session as well as use software readily available to make a vid of any thing on their monitor without receiving a file.

So you must remember that all chat can be saved with a screenshot which includes whatever is appearing on the pc's monitor.
This can be saved as all sort of files and plastered anywhere on the web.

Every word you type & picture in a chat regardless of service can be saved to the local hard drive receiving the message.

I wouldn't give this guy the time of day and as soon as you felt a creep factor or just uneasy leave, and just ignore/block/report to site your concerns.

Don't lose any sleep over this creep they are a dime a dozen on the net just be glad its only pixels and not real life. Keep your guard up on what you do online as nothing is protected and secure.
