"Q"
Actually saw some of your territory about a million years ago on a couple of
trips from Governors Island to New London. Hate to admit it but about all I
remember is how strange people talked, ate dressed and walked. Not that
it was bad, just weird but for a guy from all the way across the country it
was an experience.
Lefty, If all you saw was from Governor's Island, NY to New London, CT, you didn't see MY territory - you saw "the City". They may be in the same state as us, but that's kind of like comparing LA to Napa. LA and Napa are about 50 miles further than Rochester and Governor's Island are. NY and LA are Major Metropolises; Napa and the Finger Lakes Region, of which Rochester is a part, are both agricultural/Heavy Wine growing regions.
I was going to compare with Stockton, which is about 10 miles closer to LA than Rochester and NYC, but I don't know that Stockton has the agri-business that we do. Two of our outlying counties were just named the 2nd best place in the country for agri-business. Kraft Foods, Barilla Pasta, Fairport has LiDestri Foods, which makes Francesco Rinaldi and Newman's Own sauces. (Cadbury Scweppes/Duffy-Mott), now owned by Snapple - workers are on strike. We are both the second largest wine producer in the country, behind CA, AND the second largest Apple producer, behind WA. Plus lots of Sweet Corn, Peaches, other assorted foodstuffs. Then there's Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, in addition to many smaller companies.

And, you're right, THEY DO talk funny. With microcosms of speech patterns.
I was fairly adept at differentiating among
Lower Hudson Valley, North of the City
Manhattan
Bronx
Brooklyn
Long Island
Also,
New Jersey
Philadelphia
There are decided differences in accent down there.

And, now, I humbly offer my "use this word in a poem" piece:
We'll raise my Quaigh,
and invite Ye to stay,
for our grapes fair and fay,
whether in pies or aged,
in many a way.
Our region is blessed from
Chablis to Pinot,
Riesling to Cabernet,
and also Merlot.
And, if you're Jewish,
Manischevitz, you know.
Plus Sparkling Methode Champenoise
or simply the juice,
whether sparkling or Welch's
there's plenty your thirst to sluice.
And if, while you're here,
you've a hankering for beer,
we've also a brewery of our own,
quite near.
Genesee is her name,
of "Cream Ale" fame?!
She's also now making a "Canadian" brew,
that goes by the name of Labatt Blue.
Lest you think we're done, you're in for a treat,
we also are near a treat, sweet.
For the sap of trees Maple
is oft a staple,
and it's fun to look to the skies
when in February the sap does rise.
So I lift, once again,
my Quaigh to my friends,
and my ear I do bend
to any message you send.
