Political cartoon racist?

"racism will always exist because the blacks refuse to accept the fact that the whites agree salvery was wrong"

I feel it's just the opposite guy...Whites have to remind Black folks that they are Black and they need to fall in line...Whites arent as vocal today so they use methods like Newspaper Cartoons...One white racist does not represent all white Americans but it proves that racism is still alive and will probably never fade away...I'm not saying it's one races fault..I am saying that Whites & Blacks are use to "The Norm"..Fight first and then walk away madder than ever...I wonder how whites and Blacks will deal with this country when the Hispanics become the Majority?

"many ethice groups through out the world have forgiven the past. it is too bad the blacks do not."

Blacks don't like being lumped together. I can't speak for the Entire black community and how they feel and neither can you...I don't know every Black person in America. Do you know every white person in America? Do you represent them?

Neither one of us can speak for the Jewish community. Jews feel that they are owed the reparations our American Government gives them for the survivors of the holocaust..Perhaps all Jews don't feel the American tax-payer should have to pay for something we did not cause...Jews have moved on from the past but I'm sure they're cashing those Reparation checks that we're getting taxed for..

"blacks to me seem like the most racist group these days."

Once again that is your opinion. You are not black and you don't live with Black people. I'm certain Blacks have not burned a cross in your front yard or tar-feathered one of your family members...

I am Black and my Family is Black and i LOVED how Black Americans stood united in the election of President Obama...If Blacks hated each other they would have believed that a Black man winning the Highest office in the World would have been a "Joke" and not voted...

Blacks of all skin-tones stood in voting lines debating, laughing, talking, Loving each other and being REAL Americans and doing their duty by voting...So Blacks are the MOST united group today because a Dream and Promise came to light..

In spite of your personal opinions about Black folks, we're good people and we want the best out of life like any other human being...

The cartoon isn't racist. It's merely a part of the conservative's on-going interest in provoking the act of murder.

They don't understand a lot of things. Ergo, in the interest of their narrow understandings which didn't include intelligent, forceful negotiation, they murdered a lot of south-east asians; a lot of Iraqis; and now, because they don't understand the coagulated sewer-state that Bush left the economy in, they want to murder the President. Why? Because they can't get past their own self-imposed stupidity. So they're stuck at 'What's wrong with shooting the President? He's only a dark-skinned primate gone amok.'

The Republicans want enough of you at 'short-attention-span' economics. Well, frankly, a lotta days, I'm short-attention-span, too. Here's Economics 201: If the economy of the real world that you happen to be living in is dead, it takes something like a major over-haul to turn it into a living economy again.
The Republicans think there will be an Economics 101-type of failure of Obama's efforts. That way, people will vote for them in 2012. Since an economic system includes many factors that simulate pure chance, there is a big chance they will be right; or look right. That will not mean that they will actually be right.
Economics is about more than numbers; more than GNP growth and so on.
Economics is also about jerking the rug of security out from under people so they get mad and shoot your neighbors out of frustration.

The Cold War Era generated enough bad karma to do us in and if we don't generate enough good karma to balance it, it will do us in.

Go ahead, bat for your team. We're not individuals anymore anyway. We accept our manifesto, read the script and regurgitate. It beats the hell out of thinking for ourselves, now doesn't it.

.

what does this even mean....i guess its nice to be vague and try to come off as profound....i didnt write out of more definitive answer because i've already written it in this thread....you weren't there first to state your position (henry was) and i already responded (the same way i would have to yours)...you assume way to much about me...

do i think the cartoonist is racist...i really dont think so

do i think the cartoon is/was intentionally racist....not at all

but to brush connotations under the table as if there is nothing there and paint everything in black in white is whats is wrong with a lot of opinions in this thread imo

its kinda hard to take anyone's opinion seriously after they equate you speaking out..... to sharpton or jackson (who have been clowns for awhile now)...they are not the collective voice of the black race....they are exploitation at its finest...at least we agree on one thing

That's pretty racist.

We all have a right to free speech, so long as the cartoon it meets that standard, racists have a right to print their racism.

Anyway wouldn't you rather know who they are.

i have never thought of myself as being a racist and that is sad i appear that way. i guess i am just getting tired of all of it. the US reacted to hurricane katrina wrong. that is called racism. dont make fun of the president. that is racism. many events between those two. just tired of it.

whites are not as vocal about racism because we they do not believe every other race is out to get them. and where i do live the majority of my community is black. i do believe racism does exist, but when it is use wrong to create more racism, i become frustrated. when hispanics become the majority minoity group, you tell me how the black population feels. as i said before, the black community is more racist against the hispanics, the asians, and amongst the skin color of their own group. i see it on a daily basis. i guess it is where you live. maybe someday. but why bring this up, right?

"whites are not as vocal about racism because we they do not believe every other race is out to get them."

...LOL.Give me a Break..So what are you going to say next "White people arent racist at all"?.....Whites don't feel they have to be or need to be vocal about racism and how it affects other races because they're not on the receiving end of racism/discrimination..That's a fact.

"the black community is more racist against the hispanics, the asians, and amongst the skin color of their own group. i see it on a daily basis. i guess it is where you live."

That's your opinion. You come across as ignorant..I don't care if you KNOW every Black person in your neighborhood and ALL the black people on your job, that doesnt mean Blacks across America Hate Asians, Hispanics and Whites..You really have a lot of anger & bitterness towards Black people..Let it go dude..

"when hispanics become the majority minoity group, you tell me how the black population feels."

Uhhm dude where have you been?...LOL...Hispanics ARE the Largest Minority group...It's SAD that you arent aware of that..

If you think Faux News' ("We distort. You deride.") coverage of Obama's candidacy wasn't racist, you probably won't accept anything short of an actual lynching as being so.

That's essentially what these discussions come down to. Some people are willing to examine the situation from a reasonable, unbiased perspective, others will insist that racism isn't involved unless there's a Klansman, a noose, chains, a whip, and a black family being sold on the auction block.

A lot of people are stingy with that word, they only use it in historical context, their lack of education makes it particularly impossible for them to understand modern racism which is as intricate and nuanced as any societal construct.

I don't know who said that making fun of the president was racism, but portraying him as a monkey - that has a lot of historic baggage, just like the watermelon pic. People who say it isn't racist, well maybe they're clueless and maybe they're looking the other way, but it's still racism.

What you did was lump all black people into one giant, malignant super persona.

That's racial stereotyping of monumental (grin) proportions. There is plenty of racism still out there, everything from institutional racism to the KKK, and none of it is the the fault of black people.

There are plenty of racist black people out there too - but you can't just call all black people racist any more than you can call all white people racist.

^Innocuous? Sure, if you wipe all context and reasonable interpretation, it could be construed as innocuous.

I agree, and thankfully, the mayor with the watermelons is going to quit on monday. It's too bad that Murdock didn't fire the cartoonist.

*sigh* There is no double standard here. For centuries, essentialist arguments about the inherent inferiority of black people have relied on what's now known as the "Negro-ape metaphor" in order to justify the inherent superiority of the white race. There is a long historical precedent for the argument that depictions of black people as apes is racist in intent.

I accept your point as accurate. Just so everyone knows though, it is possible to grow up in north america and reach your mid-thirties and never have heard about any of that. I had no idea about that history.

That's essentially what these discussions come down to. Some people are willing to examine the situation from a reasonable, unbiased perspective, others will insist that racism isn't involved unless there's a Klansman, a noose, chains, a whip, and a black family being sold on the auction block.

This point follows on the last one I quoted. Not everyone is aware of the historical context, because it hasn't been part of their education. If anyone has tried to use comparisons to chimpanzees as an obvious racist reference, it would have gone over the heads of many people who don't know the history. That is a good start at least, because it shows that racists cannot count on everyone being "in on the joke."

You're absolutely right. We shouldn't lump people together and none of us speaks for all of us. And if we all were supposed to have the same opinion it would be kind of creepy anyway. But then why do you do it here:

Whites have to remind Black folks that they are Black and they need to fall in line...
Whites arent as vocal today so they use methods like Newspaper Cartoons...
Jews feel that they are owed the reparations our American Government gives them for the survivors of the holocaust
Jews have moved on from the past but I'm sure they're cashing those Reparation checks that we're getting taxed for
i LOVED how Black Americans stood united in the election of President Obama.
Whites were afraid of change when Blacks were freed..
Whites were afraid of change during the Civil Rights movement..
Whites were afraid of Change when a Black man's chances of becoming President were highly possible...

I wasn't afraid of shit, as the saying goes. I could hardly wait for Obama. And last time we had "White Meeting Night" I never voted for cartoons or lynchings. At least you admitted this:

One white racist does not represent all white Americans but it proves that racism is still alive and will probably never fade away.

I'm sorry you're so pessimistic. Racism might not die, but it is certainly fading away. If we're going to get anywhere, white people need to be in on the solution, even if just because there are so many of us. But it isn't our job because we're white, or because a bunch of dead people who did bad things to a different bunch of dead people were also white. It is our job because it is your job too, to make sure we can all have an equal chance in life, and live as neighbours, friends & family.

No, it can be interpreted as racist. There's a difference.
People want to be offended, so they are and some people need them to be.

Some people want to offend others, and in the case of this cartoon, I think it was an intentional choice to offend people by drawing a cartoon with racist intent - though I would never have guessed that without LilBit's explanation and a bit of follow-up reading to confirm it.

and now comics are not protected. jackie mason is now considered a racist because of a joke he made about the president. i have heard many ethnic jokes done by comics to quite a deverse crowd and it is all done with humor. bad taste? yes, but still funny in that ''i can't believe they said that'' kind of way. are we being to sensitive these days and looking for trivial comments that are meant not to offend, but be satire?

Not that funny a cartoon.

But don't any of you see the reference to that old saw--"a dozen chimpanzees, given time, could write War and Peace"?

Isn't the cartoonist trying to say that the Stimulus Bill was written by, not the White House, but a dozen chimps (aka Congress).
