Re: The Political Cartoon Thread – 2014

I think I'd like to start this year with Rick Perry.

I'll give applause to anyone who knows who drew this cartoon and why.

Hint: the author was a famous and beloved American inventor.

Benjamin Franklin. He was representing the colonies in London, and this was warning Parliament they were alienating the colonies.

Re: The Political Cartoon Thread – 2014

I must confess I don't recall the specific issue, though.

Since it was drawn right before the Revoltution, I assume it was meant to refer to all the issues the colonists had with the British at the time. It was supposed to be a warning that England was going to lose its colonies if it didn't change how it was treating them.

While I doubt it had any impact on negotiations with the British it is my opinion that Franklin's cartoon failed to deliver his point. With it's over the top gore it's begging to be ignored. I know why Franklin thought he could do it though. His first cartoon was very well received in both the colonies and England:

Now props if anyone knows what Franklin was trying to accomplish when he drew this awesome piece of American history.

I recognize it but can't place the context. OTOH, it speaks directly to "If we do not hang together, we shall all assuredly hang separately".

It was for the French-Indian War. Franklin was trying to get the colonies to support the British against the French and their Indian allies.
