^Kinda "bipolitical"?

Cute, but no.
There's a fallacy in the linear, left-right mapping of the political spectrum -- the reality is that people's political positions lie on at least a full plane. The vertical axis is liberty-authority, and both major parties lie well below the midpoint, heavily into authoritarian territory.
I sit at the other end of that, emphasizing liberty of the individual above all else.

I despise both sides of that dichotomy, because neither one is what it claims to be. "Liberal" used to mean putting individual liberty first; "conservative" used to mean holding fast to what's good. Now, they're just positions for telling people what to do and how to live.
In classical terms, I'm both liberal and conservative.
In today's terms, I'm neither.

^What he said.

How can I be a conservative if I want to legalize drugs and prostitution?

How can I be liberal if I support small government and capitalism?

According to some of the liberals here, your either one or the other,or a coward in denial. If your going by the prevailing attitude here,I'm a card carrying conservative apologist and flunky. But if I were among a group of conservatives,I'd be the most liberal in the room.I have never been supportive of movement conservatism, but some conservative principles like smaller government, lower taxation, emphasis on responsibilities as well as rights appeal to me.I am pro-life and feel that it doesn't serve progressive thinking in our day and time to defend abortion rights except in the most difficult, extreme cases. But I am pro-gay rights, believe in some measure of gun control,do not think a reasonable concern for respecting our borders need turn into an anti-immigrant(especially Hispanic)xenophobic demagoguery.I am a firm believer in the First Amendment and think we should do precious little in whittling away our basic civil liberties to give us security,as that tears the heart out of what America is suopposed to be built upon.I think Flag Amendments and barriers to trade and contact with Cubans undermine rather than serve their cause.I don't think America is served by religious rightists trying to promote an authoritarian Christian America which if realized will bear no resemblance to what our forefathers ever dreamed of.

In other words, there are a lot of us here who are not definable by simple conservative or liberal.Political thinking isn't always black or white, there is ample grey in the mix for many,if not most.

But you have to pick. . . which is it? (*8*)

Edit: And by the way, folks: You don't even need to tell us how you feel. You can just vote anonymously!

-sigh- I think I'll just go back to bed.

I consider myself a moderate with more liberal than conservative leanings.
So put me in the liberal column for polling purposes.

I consider myself a thinking humanist but I'm stuck in a black or white world. I know I project liberalism to the black and white people here, but what my POV is actually is always for the humanistic approach to life and politics. The golden rule has always been the way I think when I deal with other people.

I can't vote. I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I don't quite fit.

Sounds pretty liberal to me.

If that's liberal, what the heck is Hillary?

Oh, I remember -- she's an authoritarian: she supports the ruinous and destructive "War on Drugs", opposes the right of a woman to do what she wants with her own body, delights in large government, and can't stand capitalism.

Alright, I'm calling bullshit if you pro-Rodhamites sit back silently as he makes this shit up while I exhaustively proved how she was pro-Iraq invasion and you vehemently denied/spun that reality away despite the video of her own words.

His first question does allude to a better point---what is liberalism or conservatism? One could easily argue that they are not static, absolute terms and could even perceive shifts in what they mean during the Dubya administrations.

None of it is "made-up":

She supports the "War on Drugs", she just wants to change it.
She doesn't approve of prostitution.
She has voted for just about all of the Bush proposals to enlarge government and spend more money (including the Iran adventure).
And she has called capitalism a failed system.

^If you are waiting for someone to argue that Clinton really approves of prostitution, wants to legalize drugs, is opposed to children's health care and is opposed to capitalism, you will wait for a long time.

By the way, "expanding government" translates to "helping poor (black) people" in reactionary speak.

When someone says, "With the Katrina disaster in New Orleans, the levee was dynamited in the middle of the night so that the floodwaters would go into the poor neighborhoods and not the rich ones." That means "My judgment is impaired and I know you shouldnt take me serious"
