I was raised by my mother and her girlfriend (until they broke up) and for the most part we have the same thoughts. I tend to be a bit more fiscally conservative than her and way more liberal with my social views though.

I was just wondering if you have the same political slant of those that raised you?

My mom is sortof of left-field, sortof middle. She supports the NDP or Green parties whenever a vote is due, unfortunately though, she doesn't really care, as she asks me to do the research for her.

My mom is a Conservative Christian Republican and always has been since I was born, although apparently she used to be more liberal before she had kids (she was intially a registered Democrat). Her biggest issue is definitely abortion and I don't think shell ever vote for a pro-choice candidate if she has a choice.

Dad's views have changed. He was a fiscal liberal and social conservative and a registered Democrat. Ultimately, he always voted for whomever the firefighters union endorsed (he's a retired firefighter), no matter what party, although at the national level it usually was Democrats. Since he retired, he's gotten a lot more conservative and voted for McCain in the last election. He also voted for Bush in 2004, but that was because he considered Kerry a traitor for his anti-war activism after Vietnam. He voted for Clinton both times and Gore in 2000.

As is probably obvious, politics is something that was discussed quite a bit in the house. Clinton's impeachment was a major source of tension. After one debate ended with profanities (and my parents had never cussed in front of me before), it was basically understood that it couldn't be discussed.

My views have evolved, and while initially I agreed with my mom, now, I go seperate ways from both my parents as I've become more libertarian. We'd disagree on issues like legalizing drugs, prostitution, and gambling. The one issue my mom is not a conservative stalwart on is gun control, which she strongly favors, while I'm a big 2nd amend proponnent. Where we are in agreement is in most fiscal issues, (supporting) capital punishment, foreign policy/defense, and especially abortion.

Actually many people think that Shiavo's mother and her husband had a pro-money agenda, and the pro-life crowd, including our late and unlamented fool of a governor, took over for them and ran with it.

It was Jeb - he is a Roman Catholic and jumped on the pro life bandwagon. Made himself, his party, and the people of Florida look like fools.

There was a story going around that the mother's husband confronted Michael Schiavo in the nursing home and demanded a share of the settlement. He said no, and that's when things got ugly. No I don't have a reference, and it doesn't matter at this point.

Everyone in my family are Yellow Dog Dems except one Aunt and her Husband. They're also the only Catholics (Aunt married a Czech,) Their kids split evenly, but none of them are particularly political.

For the most part, I don't think the rest of family would vote Republican for any reason, even though they're pretty damn conservative. No it doesn't make sense, they still see the Repubs as the party of Lincoln, and not in a good way. My Great Grandfather would excuse you from the table if you tried to promote a Republican, And my Grandmother continues that tradition.

This last election was fun to watch, the oldsters were torn because Obama was a black man. Incidentally this election also uncovered that their misogyny ran deeper than their prejudice - Obama was better than Hillary - women you know, don't make strong leaders.

They always vote straight ticket Dem anyway, though they were all predicting doom an gloom because "America will never elect a black man." The only exception was my Great Uncle who Couldn't bring himself to vote for a negro, but couldn't force himself to vote for a Republican either. He didn't vote.

I'm far more liberal than almost all of them, but thanks to the civil war, I generally don't have to have political fights with them. Irony.

My parents have been either Republican or Democrat, as things suited, because here where we live everyone believed in small government, balanced budgets, not messing with other countries which haven't bothered us, upholding the entire Bill of Rights, and other basic and common-sense elements of liberty.

My dad was a Democrat when he died, but he looked at all the regulations that both parties have been giddily piling up on us, and said that the whole thing together was exactly what he went overseas to fight against -- and his buddies who'd been in Europe in WW II agreed with him.

I've pretty much inherited their love of liberty, though I went through a very Republican period. My older brother is probably left of Schumer, Clinton, and co., though, so it's hard to say how much is passed down.

Both my parents were yellow dog democrats as is myself. I have 2 brothers who recently went reppug. 2000 and 2004 for Bush because of taxes. One brother went Repug because he wanted to be sheriff and had to go repug to run against his boss. It screwed him, lollololol. The sheriff lost and gave my brother all the shit jobs he could find. The other brother for taxes found out how Bush screwed up the country.
My mother worked for a Dem County Clerk and was involved in Dem politics for about 30 years before her death. She was in charge of absentee voting the last 25 years.
Dad was upset that Ike beat Stevenson and bitched about it well through LBJ's term.
My brothers must be making a killing for them to want bush's tax cuts.. Thats about it.
Oh, yeah, My mother bitched about having to vote Repug because of my brother running for Sheriff. The only time she had to vote R.

Except for my brother John who is an accountant and an uptight republican prick,that walks around like he has a two by four lodged up his ass,everyone in my family is at least a Democrat.

My mom never gave a shit about politics, but voted Democrat.When she did discuss politics, it was to call Reagan filthy names.My dad and my stepmom are very far left leaning Democrats.

I suspect my brother in law is a closet Republican though..But he's not allowed to voice pro Republican sentiment in the house.

My parents were both Democrats when they stood for honest hard working people. They became Reagan Republicans during the 80's. I'm conservative on fiscal issues and liberal on social issues. My dad is a conservative on both scores.

That comes from having a cabal at the top who think that having recognizable names will get them attention.
They may be an improvement over the ivory-tower all-at-once purists of not long back, who wanted to change everything all at once -- do away with practically all federal laws and regulations overnight, auction off all federal lands (including national parks), bring all U.S. troops overseas home by the weekend, all without considering consequences -- but they're making us look like idiots. There just aren't any Libertarians of national stature, and grafting on ideological freaks like Barr just makes us look like loons.

I'd prefer the Libertarians tried to get None Of The Above as their presidential candidate rather than trying to find people with name recognition who are really libertarians. I recall someone saying that Barr ran like a 60/70 on the World's Smallest Political Quiz, but that makes him just barely libertarian -- kind of on par with running Ralph Nader as the Dem candidate. We need someone at 80/80 or better, who's also pragmatic.

My parents were registered Democrats until Tennessee went to an open party system, and I'm still a registered Democrat. I'm considerably further left than they are.
