I really think it's more useful to focus on making a strong, positive, persuasive case for gay marriage than to keep revisting the racial and cultural divides that we already know and acknowledge are present. I still say an ample majority can be won over with time, and a convincing case. I am always willing to engage the evangelical community in discourse because I understand them and I think they are capable of understanding us.

Interesting about Latinos being evenly split in this poll, I wonder if the same numbers would be found if Latinos across the country were polled. I'd definitely be interested to see if the numbers differ between Latinos in Southern California and Latinos in Texas.

of course they are, this article is (verbatim) about the "racial divide on gay marriage." i don't know much about latin religious history, i'm just sharing some of the origins of devout christianity (and hypermasculinity for that matter) in the black community, both of which are driving forces behind homophobia.

i thought i'd give some historical context since these discussions usually just center around people arguing about numbers and statistics.

They were forced into catholicsm just like the black slaves. They kinda had it worse though, if they didn't believe they were simply killed or starved into believing. And then once they believed, death was still a prospect as the europeans began to mass exterminate them.

yes, blacks were allowed to survive and these religious teachings have been marinating in our community ever since. both sides seem intent on demanding that the other take the first step so we remain dormant. if we can ever put the egos away we might make some progress but it doesn't seem likely in the near future.

Well that's unsurprising. I don't see why blacks won't reach across the aisle, black American choirs wouldn't be shit without gay men. I see the divide slowly closing, there are always tensions when two conflicting cultures merge. I'm starting to see a lot of churches (of all colors) accepting gays, even protesting for gay equality. I think we'll see a noticeable shift in our lifetime.

Maybe it's the optimist in me but I believe before the end of this century churches will be no more than indifferent towards us, the idea of a church being overtly anti-gay will be as laughable then as separate fountains are in 2009.
