This just confirms my belief of how stupid and dumb Americans are. HOW STUPID CAN YOU GET AMERICA? I mean even the rest of the world can get it right. According to this new survey of the Global Communities opinion of the U.S. remains poor; however, many around the world have been watching closely the U.S. presidential race and many have a more positive outlook for America and its future leadership particularly for Senator Obama's candidacy. Many around the world have opted for Senator Barack Obama over John McCain in their preference. The U.S. is the only country surveyed in this poll that has expressed to be more confident in John McCain 60% to Obama's 59% while in 12 other countries out of 23 including Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia, the overwhelming majority, by a 2 to 1 margin prefer Senator Obama over John McCain. For example, the French prefer Senator Obama 84% to McCain's 33%. If the rest of the world can get it right why can't America (AMERICANS) get it right?

The poll also showed Hillary Clinton generally rated higher and more favored than John McCain, but lower than Sen. Obama.

I think Winston Churchill said it best, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else." And see that's the problem America the world doesn't have the time or patience to keep waiting and hoping for you to get it right. You've only got one shot at this America. This is your last chance.

Well, I wouldn't say that overall the US prefers John McCain. According to all the other recent polls I've seen, especially the NY Times Poll that was just released, Obama trounces McCain in a General Election matchup and is even outside the margin of error.

It's hysterical, because I am expecting McCain to have more senior moments leading up to the General and is bound to say something else stupid which will make him look even more out of touch.

Well, here's my rant for the day :) It may very well be true that Americans are stupid, but harping on it is counterproductive. I mean, we can go around patting ourselves on the back about how smart we are in not supporting Bush/McCain and go on to lose every election from now to eternity, or we can figure out how to attract Republican voters.

One sure way not to attract Bush/McCain voters is to call them stupid.

I mean, if we Democratic voters are so smart, it shouldn't be too difficult, right?

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

I do not think the OP was just referring to Americans as being stupid just in elections. Statistics do show that the educational system is failing here. Students are being dumbed down compared to other countries especially in math and sciences.

See Jaywalking on Leno? Even simple questions by people on the street can't get answered right.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

Point well taken, WYSIWYG. I guess my mind just went to the election since this is the current events forum.

God, Jaywalking is unbelievable. While I'm watching it, it's hilarious, but afterwards I'm so depressed.... :(

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

Well while I'm an ardent Democrat I kind of think that the entire point of the democracy is that politicians draw their power from the will of the governed not of random observes who have varied motivations in their decisions. And the fact other people want something that a certain group of people does not certainly is never evidence that either group is innately "stupid."

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

I basically agree with the spirit of what you said, falconfan, but I don't think anyone said anybody was innately stupid.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

Americans are both stupid and selfish, and that's a deadly combination.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

The best part is that some are swayed by the fact that other countries dont like John McCain. Amazing. How lemming like the left wants to be. They want to call John McCain "John McSame" but at the same time they wanna be the same as everyone else. Get a visa and hop on a raft.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

Who gives a fuck what OTHER Countries prefer. This is MY Country , not theres. We deside for ourselfs what we hope is best for US.
Let the world court decide what is best for the world and reinforce common laws shared between countries.

I have forgot the the SCOTUSA does favor looking to foreign courts to see how they have ruled , a new trend , to appease to world views of US

It is not a preference poll with absolute choices; the percentages only reflect "a lot or some confidence" in the candidates. Also, it would seem that the Americans have much more information on which to make their preferences.

You and chance win the cigars, sir! Only two of you have gotten it right. Fuck the rest of the world. Pick your leaders and we'll pick ours, thanks!

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

we dont care what the rest of the world thinks!!!

That pretty much sums up what I expected the responses would be to this... and the posts don't disappoint.

I love how the majority of americans really have no clue how the rest of the world works/lives/thinks. Yet those same people are the ones who think they know best how they SHOULD live. It happens so frequently.

Personally, I'm not surprised by the article. I mean, the rest of the world hated GW four years ago when we re-elected him. Americans are so ego-centric. I think part of that is because the country is so big that we really don't play/interact with others enough. Versus Europe has several small countries and they travel a lot more and see other cultures and therefore can better appreciate being part of a larger world. We stick with this (imo ignorant) attitude of "screw the rest of the world, we'll do what we want". I find it disgusting personally.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

I would certainly never suggest that people vote based on what people elsewhere think. That would be foolish.

If everyone in the world thinks you're wrong, that's not a reason to change your mind... but it is a good reason to double check and make damn sure you're right.

Most Americans supported Sarkozy for French President, and Blair for British PM. How do I know? Because the same sorts of polls are taken here! If this is foreign arrogance, then we're arrogant too, since we weigh in on how other countries should vote all the time.

holland, that article is hilarious! I wouldn't expect any less from Berlusconi.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

we dont care what the rest of the world thinks!!!

the world will see we are diferent at last

how do you think about what ire land did today? good for them!!

Maybe we SHOULD care what the rest of the world thinks.

This planet has become almost infinitesimally small, thanks to technology. What happens in Brazil can be in the news in Japan immediately; what happens in China can affect stocks or politics in The U.S., France and Argentina.

The U.S. has to CO-EXIST in this world along with all the other nations, peoples and governments. Is it in the best interests of national security to PISS OFF the entire world? If someday the U.S. needs help from somebody, the entire planet may instead "hate us" and perhaps even band together in a global alliance to destroy the U.S. I feel that it could happen - if, for instance, the U.S. were to nuke Iran, which McCain will almost certainly do.

Holland, WHAT did Ireland do? It's something I completely missed...

[EDIT: I just saw your other thread about them deciding to remain completely sovereign. GOOD on them!!!]

And, oh, WHY do the percentages add up to more than 100%?

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

based on a couple of the posters, my just goofing let other countries be part of our electoral college process seems to be popular

can u imagine tim russert on election nite saying "french polling suggests BO has a 75/25 lead on John McCain .......... i think we can put up the 50 delegates for BO and so on

its not that we dont care what they think - its that their POV is so wildly skewed by the media - ours - and theirs

so i think zinger said something like we should "keep it in mind" - for sure - keep it in mind

bottom line for me is gwb is clearly unpopular - and the knee jerk reaction is NEW and BO is NEW and John McCain on the surface is not NEW - I doubt the average Frenchman/Dane/Pole knows that John McCain is the most bipartisan senator in the U.S. - prob not

is my point

fuck the french

just kidding

but i could give a shit if they want BO to win - just as i have zero to do with their electoral deal, they have none to do with mine

That's France, Denmark, England, Germany and Cuba... thanks.

Whether you support Obama or McCain why should you be concerned about what other countries think? I wouldn't say they "get it right." They have a slough of their own troubles. Frankly, they can piss off. They have no problem taking help and benefits from Americans but want to tell us what to do. It's not one world, people, nor should it be. We fought a war for our independence. It's sad that many would just as soon give it up.

Where have you seen other countries wanting to tell you what to do?? This is an opinion poll...

You might want to learn what an opinion is :

1 a: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter b: approval, esteem2 a: belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge b: a generally held view3 a: a formal expression of judgment or advice by an expert b: the formal expression (as by a judge, court, or referee) of the legal reasons and principles upon which a legal decision is based
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/opinion

See how it is not the same as a request or an order ? Or are you saying people other than Americans have no right to have opinions??

Who gives a fuck what OTHER Countries prefer. This is MY Country , not theres. We deside for ourselfs what we hope is best for US.

Obviously not you... but apparently other people with less myopic view of the world do. Nobody's deciding for you, read again.

Of course we are concerned... while France's economy doesn't impact Americans' lives, US' economy on the contrary has large impact on the rest of the world...
So... fuck you

just kidding

Europe and most of the rest of world just wants the USA to behave as a "responsible world citizen".

One thing the US public underestimates is how bad the USA using torture has been perceived in Europe - though not an issue for most of Asia.

This is one thing that gives Europeans the "gut feeling" that the USA have become the bad guys - more part of the problem than the solution.

In this respect - McCain is far more anti-torture than most democrats - maybe due to his own personal experience of being tortured - but he has fought hard to stop this. But in general this isn't something European public opinion is aware of - so they tend to view McCain as just Bush MK 3

World public opinion can be very fickle - just like the actual US voters - this is only based on sound bites. At least in the case of McCain - he does have a well documented history of doing what he says.

Obamma seems a good speaker - but Republican TV ads against him should be very cheap to make - just feature the words of Clinton in the primary campaign - he might be a real nice guy - but he's got not much real experience.

One things for sure - the congress will be Democrat controlled (especially the Senate as there are so many republican marginal seats up for election this time)

In practice real elections are determined more by who doesn't bother to turn out to vote on the day - rather than what people say to pollsters.

Polls are quite accurate in terms of peoples political affiliations - but very much less so in predicting if they will actually vote. Though at least the polls of European people are more accurate - in that none of them will vote in the USA election.

Re: Poll: U.S. Only Country That Prefers John McCa

Europe and most of the rest of world just wants the USA to behave as a "responsible world citizen".

That's just too much to ask the current Administration.

One thing the US public underestimates is how bad the USA using torture has been perceived in Europe - though not an issue for most of Asia.

Better be careful. You probably remember Bush's speech back in 2001. "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

You might find Bush bringing "freedom and democracy" over to Europe with talk like that.
