Zelda Rubinstein, best known as Tangina Barrons in Poltergeist, passed away early this morning at the age of 76. Zelda's agent tells Fox31 in Denver that she died of natural causes at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles. He went on to say that Zelda was hospitalized two months ago after she suffered a heart attack.

Zelda's breakout role was in Poltergeist in 1982, and she went to star in other films including Sixteen Candles, Frances and Teen Witch. Zelda was also a regular on Picket Fences.

Rest in peace, Zelda.

Cross over, children. All are welcome.

Utterly random fact. Back in the very early 90s, when nobody had internets, I finally managed to get ahold of a few gay magazines that somebody didn't want anymore. They weren't porn magazines (a few butt shots here and there), but I pored over them like they were the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was an utterly different world.

One of the main articles in one of the magazines had to do with Zelda becoming a spokeswoman for gay safe sex. There were pictures of her looking very stern with a dialogue balloon next to each one - "Condoms every time!" and "No fisting!" (I had no idea what that was back then.)

I read a week or so ago that she wasn't doing well. I believe she was taken off life support at that time.

She probably had a wonderful career, but I remember her only from Poltergeist.

Ahh yes....

The was Honcho magazine. I still have a few issues with her in them.

It was rather disconcerting at the time. Trying to rub one out, turning the page and seeing her image staring back at you through your lube-soaked hand... I suppose they're collectors issues, now. I never did have the heart to throw them away. So many young memories.

Oh well. RIP, Zelda. Your house is clean.

Aww, that's too bad. :( She was an adorable little woman. R.I.P. Zelda.

Can't no grave hold her body down! She'll be back. Maybe sooner than you think.

It wasn't Honcho. It may have been an LA-only publication - Edge? Something like that. It was black-n-white, more of an alt-weekly, I think.

Sweet, funny lady.
Loved her in Picket Fences.
God rest her soul.

I remember those ads, too... And that was way back when we were still learning about AIDS and what caused it and how it was spread...

Here's an interview she gave to Advocate.com just last year about her involvement in the safe sex campaign.
