When I was a boy I lived near a lake, I walked my dog along the lake shore one day and came across a washed up dead carp. My dog
rolled and rubbed on that smelly dead fish and seemed to be having a blast. I was not thinking of how the smell would cling to him, I was amazed at why he would do it.

We had several dogs when I was growing up and they'd all do it given half a chance. Sheep shit was a particular favourite.
