I was a little groggy when I woke up this morning, and checked my cell phone for any messages. I had this news alert waiting, and was somewhat stunned.

Pope Francis said “who am I to judge?” gay people as he discussed one of the most divisive issues affecting the Catholic Church Monday.

“I have yet to find anyone who has a business card that says he is gay,” the pontiff said at a press conference on his plane while returning from Brazil, where he talked about a number of subjects.

“They say they exist. If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?” he added.

As much credit as I give to Pope Francis for clearly recognizing the need to chart a new course for the Catholic Church ... he is a visionary no doubt ... what I do take issue with are those parishioners who will suddenly reverse course on the topic. Did it really take their spokesman to say these words to get them to change their minds? And people wonder why non-religious types compare the faithful to a flock of sheep.

You go Francis gurl.

Of all the popes, the only ones who truly I have any regard for are Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul I, and now Pope Francis. Francis in particular because since he has become Pope he has stripped virtually all of the pomp and regality out of what should be a position of great humility and service, and this response fits what he has been doing all along in trying to put the "Christ" back into the church.

I mean with all due respect, who is he to judge gay people? And yes before you all retort that he is the head of the Catholic Church, I am fully aware of his position, and while I welcome all support of the LGBT community, particularly if it puts an end to the widespread homophobia among Catholics (not mentioning any names *cough, Rick Santorum, cough*), I just think that the Catholic Church (and most other religious institutions for that matter) are hypocritical. After all, doesn’t the Bible teach us to “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”, which would rule out the Catholic Church and its entire clergy, because let’s face it; their sins are innumerable, including the failure to weed out paedophiles among their own ranks. They truly are shameful, and Pope Francis would do well to remember that, so when he asked the question “who am I to judge gay people?”, he got one thing right, and that is that he has no right to judge us. Having said that, he is a step up from his awful predecessor, who had a very orthodox stance on homosexuality, good riddance to him.

the Jesuit stance has long been that homosexuality isn't a sin itself (but gay sex is, along with any sex without the intent of procreation). kinda feels like the new Pope is keeping with his Jesuit roots.

After all, doesn’t the Bible teach us to “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”

sorta, but that passage is about forgiveness, not about not judging others (because Jesus follows that up by telling her to stop sinning)

Good post!
Re the last sentence, maybe that is why they got rid of him, the predecessor.

This guy is a breath of fresh air after his predecessor, Emperor Palpatine. He is really moving people and his emphasis to recognize and be close to the poor is a genuine connection. I wish him the best in his tenure as Pope. I hope he uses his power to make a lot of lives better.

This is a good thing, but it's really just lip service.

When he allows and encourages AIDS-ridden African Catholic communities to use condoms, I'll be impressed.

It's a step and I'll give him credit for that. And considering that in Catholicism the Pope is pretty much God's voice on Earth, even lip service is huge from him. At least he realizes that his faith's stance is destroying his church and is trying to do something about it. Or maybe I'm just too idealistic.

Why do you consider that a gay issue?

Ask the evangelicals that tie homosexuality to pedophilia.

To be more serious, this isn't a change of heart on the Catholic Church's part. The still cling to "Always Our Children". You can be gay as long as you abstain.

A lot of evangelicals do this and also believe all homosexuals are effeminate, diseased, sex crazed and mentally ill.

In graduate school after one new colleague found out I was gay, he told everyone to stay away from me because they'll get AIDS if they are in the same room with me. Everyone told him that I don't have HIV or AIDS and told him how one gets HIV. He was kicked out of the University (not for his accusations, but for stealing).

Talking to a Southern Baptist a few years ago he claimed he "knew" all about homosexuality. After telling him if he wanted to know what being gay was like to ask a gay person. He got all red-faced and exclaimed: "I don't have to talk to a gay person. They're gay because of something that happened to them as a child." In other words, there's something "wrong" with being gay.... it's a condition, it's a mental illness.

Yeah, he knows all about homosexuality..... unfortunately too many believe this.

I love how the Vatican's PR machine is spinning this to show how "gracious" and "benevolent" the man is, as if treating queers like human beings shows just how saintly this man must be. The Vatican honestly expects us to be grateful for their stance that they no longer wants us thrown against a wall and shot.

And enslaving women as nuns. Allow them to become priests.
The local priest at the Episcopal Church I've started going to here, is a woman.

He may have also been posting off-topic, posting it instead as an issue about Catholic hypocrisy. (And, that is only somewhat, not entirely, off topic.)

I read the comment as, indeed, a different topic. Rather than the gay topic at hand, my first thought was how the Church has always condemned homosexuals, while giving a free pass to another sin which is so horrible that it's even the Great Third Rail for those who are sent to prison.

Nevertheless - as somebody noted after your post - there are a LOT of people who are still brainwashed to think that gay and paedophilia are EXACTLY the same thing.
