Porn as a career

We frequently get asked by members how they can get into the porn industry as a performer, and so I've put together some information to act as a guide for those interested.

My intention is not to say "Great, go for it", nor is it to say "Don't do it". The purpose of the information below is to help you arrive at a decision that is appropriate for your situation.

It's written with the UK in mind - but the basics are the same worldwide!

Firstly you need to consider the following :

• Your images, once out, will be worldwide forever. They cannot be removed by producers at your request if you later change your mind (many producers also sell the rights on to other companies). Once on the web, your images will be there forever!
• Take time to think of the consequences. Performing in porn will not be a life-long career. What do you plan on doing when you leave porn? Will your future career plan be affected by your porn career? If you ever want to work with children or go in to politics then it may well be! Whether you consider this to be fair or not is immaterial - it is simply the way that the larger percentage of society feel about adult performers.
• To be a good professional performer generally (though not always) requires good looks, perseverance and a large dollop of interpersonal skills. Are you good with people, easy going and most of all, reliable (the reliable ones get most of the work)?
• Are you confident and willing to learn and take direction?
• A good porn star will take pride in their appearance and not just rely on being the 'new' face. This means going to the gym, keeping yourself clean, getting your hair done, etc.

If you think you satisfy the above criteria, then let's look at some other things to consider.

Do NOT enter the porn business if...

• You will try and keep it a secret from any adult you dearly care about!
• You're not prepared to be looked at differently (at the least) when you tell people what you do!
• You haven't done your homework about this industry. You should know who the successful companies, producers and directors are. You should research what directors shoot what kind of content and which agents/managers have good reputations.
• You're going to cry when your hear your old high school chums have started referring to you as the blowjob or anal queen.
• You're easily swayed and manipulated - unless you have an agent, manager or loved one that is willing to act as your mouthpiece!
• You don't fully understand the health risks you are about to undertake.
• You just want to try it one time to see if you like it.

If you've got this far, it's time to look at...

Performing in front of an audience

Being naked in front of friends is one thing, but if you have doubts about being naked in front of complete strangers, then you need to overcome them before wasting time by contacting porn companies. Some people are the opposite in so far as they are shy amongst friends, but exhibitionists in front of strangers.

If you're someone with doubts, you could always try modelling for a local college. Many have art courses that require nude models. There are also numerous amateur photographers looking for models - HOWEVER, do NOT sign any Model Release contracts unless you've read them and fully understand the implications. I have a specific release that I use for my models that safeguards their privacy and prevents me from using their images for certain things. If you can't cope with this simple posing work, then there's no point in going any further.

To me, performing in front of a camera is the hardest (no pun intended) and most physically demanding job in the industry. Not only do you have to get it up, get it in and get it off when told to do so, but you often times have to do it under very strenuous circumstances…i.e. in muscle-cramping positions, on very uncomfortable surfaces or even with men that you're not very attracted to. Throw in the latest trend of "Sexual Olympics" / shock videos and you might even find yourself rubbing cocks with a stranger as you both fuck the same ass at the same time! So, if your cock doesn't get hard when the wind blows or if you don't think you could fuck an ugly bloke for an hour with a crowd of complete strangers looking at…then again, you don't need to read on any further!!

The goal is to become a model that is actually requested for by other performers. A reliable guy can make a lot of money - especially in the US - and have a hell of a lot of fun!

While most males (95%) are independent performers. A small percentage of very special males are offered contracts to become exclusive performers for a particular company. This is extremely rare!

What next?

You MUST have a valid passport, and in most cases (although not always), a decent body and a decent sized dick.

Most of the sites you'll contact will have online forms to fill in. You will need a few pictures available to email to the companies you contact. These should be a face shot, upper body shot and full frontal shot at the very least. Remember, these aren't for your passport. These are the images that are 'selling' you to the porn sites you've chosen to contact. They should reflect your personality where possible. I'd recommend getting a friend to take them so that there's no out of focus, mirror reflections etc to spoil these first impressions. Other information to have available should be your height and weight.

With your images prepared, it's time to start contacting sites!

Now, you're going to need to be honest with yourself (so perhaps the second opinion of a good and HONEST friend will help). The choice of sites you contact is based on TWO things, your build/look and what you're prepared to do. ie if you're a skinny blond twink that is very vanilla in your sexual taste, then you don't want to be applying to sites like 'DaddiesEatShit.com' or 'GimpMyRide.com' - unless they are known to use skinny blond vanilla twinks in their scenes. Equally, 'Daddies' and 'Bears' shouldn't waste their time applying to sites like SeanCody, Fratmen or Corbin-Fisher etc.

Find the sites that feature models that are similar in build/looks to you and/or go as far as you're prepared to go sexually.

And that's it!

Two last things though.

Firstly, as a general piece of personal advice - if you have any doubts about doing it, then DON'T! If it was meant to be, you'll eventually decide to do it.

Making porn is the best career I've ever had. And I've had quite a few careers. It's been rewarding in a lot of ways but like any career that puts you out in front of the public and makes you a "star," it's got it's downside as well.

The mechanics of making porn are very different than what you might think. Some people have broken my job down as "pointing a camera at people fucking." It's not really anything like that at all.

Very few men make their living by being porn stars.

Virtually all porn stars, even the huge ones, have real jobs and real careers and porn is a fun side job that gets them money and pays for week-long vacations to Miami or Southern California or New York in the winter.

Most of the top men have real jobs. I've worked with accountants, architects, designers, real estate agents and commercial pilots. One man I've worked with is a mechanical engineer who is currently working on developing next-generation pace makers.

My doctor was a colt model and the guy who sold me my house worked for Falcon.

I've worked with many guys who are students. I once had a guy I worked with tell me that he came from a poor family and they couldn't afford to send him to college and his marks weren't good enough to get him a full scholarship. He told me very frankly that "my body is my only asset and if I can use it to get my degree and enter the workforce debt-free, well I'm ahead of the game.

Even the "career porn stars" like Francois Sagat work very hard. Francois is constantly on a plane to another part of the world to make a public appearance or work for a photographer. when he's not, he runs a blog and Twitter and Facebook page that promotes his work.

Don't get into this for the "wrong" reasons.

Don't do this so people will love you or so you can have people want to be like you. Those things will happen...yes... but I've seen so many people who become porn stars for the love and validation of others and those are the guys who train wreck hard in a matter of months... weeks sometimes... because of their need for validation, they surround themselves with the serial users... they're given drugs and attention and alcohol and adoration and until they're run into the ground. Then those people move on to the next one and the model is left feeling and being worse off than he was before.

Do this for you and because you want to, not so you can hear people say "wow, you're hot."

You can make a lot of money but it's a lot of work.

My base salary at the last two jobs I had was very good. Don't get me wrong. But porn stars generally don't get a base salary and instead are paid by the scene. If you're a good entrepreneur, you can turn that into tens of thousands of dollars by blogging and writing about your work and promoting the studios you work for. But that's not an easy gig.

I maintain my own blog which makes me a lot of money but it's not something I can just do in an hour or two every day. I work a lot. At the time of writing this it's the end of December and since August I have literally had one day off. And that was because I collapsed from exhaustion and was ordered to "take some time off." I took one day and then started working on projects I could do from my bed.

Most porn stars just do their scenes and then go back to their "real lives" until the next shoot. That's fine and probably best when you're young.

Shoots can be long and grueling and physically demanding.

To get a good shot at the penetration or the model's face, I often have to put myself into downright weird positions. But I also have to tell the models to do the same. You will be in awkward positions with a camera and lighting rig between your legs for minutes at a time while you're fucking and if you're the top, you also have to stay hard and keep your balance and make it look "real" or we have to start all over again.

If you're a bottom, you have to be able to take a huge dick and get rammed with it repeatedly. Yes, you can say "I need a break" when you do, but

Shoots can take place in cold warehouses, under a hot desert sun or sometimes in a tiny bedroom with either a huge crew or sometimes just a camera person who does the entire work himself. But either way, you need to be able to stay hard, look like you're attracted to your scene partner (whom you may have just met and aren't into at all) and stay in character.

This isn't having sex.

It's a few minutes of fucking followed by just as long and often longer periods of adjusting lights and camera positions and planning out shoots and you just "hurry up and wait" while the technical side gets done. You have a director shouting directions at you like "move your hand, eyes back... ok now reach up and touch his chest... now come in for a kiss... eye contact... ugh... no, let's go back and do that again..."

Don't think I'm saying the crew isn't' going to be nice to you... quite the opposite.. the tone on set is usually great... everyone smiling and joking around and very fun. People will be very nice to you and the tone is always great. Just know that when you're shooting, you have to get it right or you'll go back and do it again until you do.​

Your work doesn't start and stop at the day of shooting.

You need to keep yourself in shape. You need to look good, stay fit, maintain a good body and not let yourself go. Your body is your asset and while it can get you work, it can only do that if it looks good. Don't show up to the studio hung over, tired, drunk... don't be partying all night and think you can show up the next day to shoot. You'll be red and puffy and tired, you'll look like shit and if they DO shoot you, you probably won't get asked back and yes... studios do share info with each other. I have the casting guys from other studios on my speed dial and if I'm thinking about working with _____ _____, I'll call up my friends at _________ studio and ask what he was like to work with. Those reputations do follow you.​
