The police union fought it, the officers didn't want it, but if one is going to enforce laws those same people should obey the law.

It's well known police officers are users and abusers Of illegal drugs, but never had to have drug testing.

I think this is a step in the right direction. They should be held to a higher standard if choosing to become a police officer.

Do you agree?

Yes.

Do federal government employees have to submit to drug tests?

You are forgetting the POLICE OFFICER have decided that THEY are ABOVE the law...

I'm surprised that this is a new thing -- the mere simple fact that society has entrusted them with GUNS should require WAY MORE than just random drug testing...

It was my assumption that you get drug tested before becoming a police officer.... and some even poly graph you to see when was the last time you used it, and what it was.

But I do think it is a bad assumption to say that all, even most police officers abuse drugs. Might depend on where you live though.

i can't believe they are just getting this now. every pd around here has been doing this for years. it's random, they draw ss#s monthly, if you get picked you go pee in a cup.

^ same way the DoD did it for years.

I've been drug tested in one form or the other most of my life. It's real easy: don't use. And if I do, I make sure I have a prescription ;)

If they drug tested the police, AND people on welfare, the world would be a much safer and happier place!

The right to privacy needs to be weighed against the public safety issue.

Police officers have the power of life and death over everyone they meet. I'd be inclined to think it's a good idea that they aren't high when enforcing the law and carrying a gun.

If the testing is done randomly and fairly, I think it's a good thing.

And yes, legislators and other politicians should also be subject to testing. Or they should be made to share what they've been smoking with the rest of us.:D

I know someone who worked for a trucking company, not as a driver, and he couldn't eat poppy bagels because it would show up on a drug test that he had to take.

So yes, all cops should take random drug tests.

I agree with this.

You couldn't eat enough Poppy Seed Bagels to piss hot. That's an urban legend.

I can't believe they weren't already being tested.

All of media companies I've worked for tested. And we were only producing bad TV. Those guys carry guns, of course you should test them.

Mandatory random drug testing, in my opinion, takes the principle that one is considered innocent until proven guilty, and twists it one-hundred eighty degrees to say that one is guilty until innocence is proven by a clean test. It also clearly violates the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by compelling a person to be a witness against themselves.

I would have thought they would already be tested. Though I don't maybe agree with testing without cause after hiring it is routine for most professions that involve operation of tools & equipment which are hazardous.
The problem is the testing may not stop with a search of the specimen for illegal drugs, and the form one signs to release the sample often states as much.
You may think they are searching for pot, coke, heroin yet if the sample includes say Prozac you might find yourself on the outs quickly with that job.
To much risk perhaps having a employee who could go "postal" with a gun, or a 40 ton tractor trailer. These are dangerous issues and complex.
Yes in the past you could certainly fail a test on poppy seeds, many test are very sensitive. As well many are not.
Depends on the $$$ spent by the employer and you can bet cops will get the high dollar ones.

It's a condition of employment. One's employment isn't a legal proceeding. Thus one's fifth amendment rights aren't infringed upon. One has to keep in mind that the fourth and fifth amendments relate to government's role. If I break into your house to look for evidence on my own and present it to the police, you're rights haven't been violated - aside from the B&E.

How is a random drug test any different than the hours one works? If you don't show up on time, you could be fired. If you don't take or fail a drug test, you could be fired.

Oh, and random drug testing does not confer innocence or guilt. It ensures one complies with company policy.

The US Supreme Court has already ruled that drug testing of this kind is permissible.
