Portugal's president to ratify same-sex marriage law

Portugal's President Anibal Cavaco Silva says he will sign a law legalising same-sex marriage passed by parliament earlier this year.

The law had been fiercely opposed by conservatives in the Catholic country.

The ratification will make Portugal the sixth country in Europe to allow same-sex marriage after Belgium, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The announcement comes days after Pope Benedict, on a visit to Portugal, told pilgrims they should oppose the law.

Portugal's Constitutional Court validated the bill last month.

You see, having lived in both countries for some time, I can attest to the rivalry those two countries have.... well more like Portugal seeing Spain as the big sister, and feeling jealous of her.... and Spain seeing Portugal as the little sister and feeling condescending towards her....

No they don't. They were the first nation in the World to allow civil partnerships for gay people in 1989, but have fallen way back in regards gay marriage.... with no change planned in the foreseeable future.

I think next are Iceland and Slovenia (with the Czech Republic, Finland close).

Oh honey, I'm majorly CRAZY....

But yeah, a good % of them guys (and even girls) are hot, but most of them are just normal everyday people.

By strange I don't mean any negative thing about them, just different from my perspective.

For example, for being countries who for centuries and centuries they fought (even when it meant the ultimate collapse of their empires) tooth and nail for the Catholic Church... nowadays most Churches sit around empty and closed.

I think that they have come around in understanding what it means giving rights to all their citizens.

I still can't believe Portugal and Spain have legalized same-sax marriage but that Germany hasn't. Our "registered partnerships" are jokes. Then again, it's not really a hot political theme out here though, even amongst gays. It still leaves me speechless though.

Iceland, Slovenia, Nepal, Luxumberg, and Argentina are all likely candidates for 2010. Albania will probably be soon too (the only reason it didn't pass this year was that a large majority of the legislatures were on strike due to alleged election fraud). Finland, Germany, and possibly Uruguay are likely candidates for 2011.

I think it's so strange Albania is close to legalizing gay marriage...I am from Bosnia and I know most people in that area are very homophobic.
