(Possible) changes to Idol's new season

Here's a video of Von Smith singing "Your Joy."

He's not quite as over the top in this song as he was during his audition, and I think he shows great control over his vocals here. When controlled, I absolutely love his voice. He sings like Aretha or Celine or something. It's crazy!

sorry for the double post....but wow...I usually can't stand Von....ever since he was on The View a few years ago....but when he's not over doing it he has a really nice voice....hopefully he knows this and won't constantly try to impress people with the screaming and over emoting.

What I don't like, nor understand, is why Ido lets people who have had record deals, and/or connections to the business, be on their show. That defeats the point of undiscovered talent.

Well, it's my belief that if you weren't successful the first time, odds are you won't be this time. lol

I mean think of those who weren't good enough for Idol, but now they're huge ala Jennifer Hudson.

Sometimes people's connections don't get them anywhere. In the case of Joanna Pacitti although she had a record deal and an album out she cannot be considered successful. There are people who get deals in the industry and are just left out in the cold. This does not constitute experience. It constitutes "you're good enough for us to sign but not good enough for us to spend money to promote."

What Idol is meant to do is 'breed' a star. They teach you stage presence, vocal control and how to be a performer all the way through. The "undiscovered talent" part is no longer such a big deal as the "see what we can do with previous talent that couldn't get anywhere."

Keep in mind that we are going on year 8 of the show and the undiscovered talent pool is very shallow. As we have seen with some of the people who have been let through so far.

Well, I'd rather see people who have never had a chance, a record deal, an opportunity to be successful have that chance. It makes me not want to watch the show. And I know I'm not the only one. If people knew that some on the show already had an opportunity to live their dream, and Idol is catering to them, they wouldn't watch. Whether I was successful or not, I'd kill to have a record deal and have the chance to do concerts and share my love with others. But thanks to people who have already had that chance, taking our spots on shows of promised opportunity, like Idol, we get to see these failed careers take a jump start again. And that pisses me off to no end.

Try not to let her past experience sway you from thinking she belongs on Idol. She had experience, was on a label, did some shows, but she didn't get the true "break" she needed. Her label was not really that concerned with helping her be successful and she got left to her own devices a lot.

Fans do not constitute success. You need a label and money and people to believe in you who can promote you and keep things running right. Joanna has auditioned for many different labels and with the state of the music industry these days she was told simply "the only way you can be successful is if you have a television show." So Idol became a necessity for her.

Oh I don't believe this in the slightest. In this day and age you soooo do not need a label to be successful. Yeah sure if you want to be the next Britney you need a label backing...but if you want to be a true artist, which I feel Joanna most likely wants to be she can do it on her own and be very successful. I know many musicians that do it D.I.Y. and tour around the world on their own dime and make it work. That's crap what you're saying about "having a television show" is the only way to be a successful musician. Yeah sure if you're a teeny bopper that is coming off of the Disney Channel maybe...but not real musicians.

I don't knock her at all for giving Idol ago...but if she's saying this is her last shot....I think that's bullshit.

see now I do like Joanna...don't get me wrong. But like last year I didn't have a problem with Carly Smithson being on the show, yeah she had had an album out and a big record deal, but she was dropped cause she only sold like 800 copies of her album or something like that and now she was a bartender who occasionally sang karaoke. She wasn't actively pursuing fame anymore, but thought that idol could be a shot. I feel like Joanna has never stopped trying to be famous so I don't really count her as an "amateur" anymore....I don't know....I still like her and if I did vote for Idol I guess I'd throw her some votes...lol

I remember actually playing 'Let It Slide' on the radio a few times. Didn't last long.

And people are so quick to blame the labels. Um, they obviously believed in her when they signed her. They put out the product, and nobody really bought into it. It's not THEIR fault. They can't force people to like her. What makes anyone think people will like her this time around?

What you are not understanding is that if an artist isn't properly marketed they get forgotten. The premise behind the Idol show in the long run is that 19 Management gets the contracts of the top 5 Idol placers and they decide who to put money into. The #1 winner is their top priority. That is who they focus on.

I know how labels work, and I know how the music industry works. I'm not an idiot. She obviously had great promotion if they even went to YAHOO MUSIC to promote her. It was shipped to radio markets, videos were made and distributed. There's no point in continuing to promote something that nobody is interested in. Bottom line. They did as much promotion as anyone would for an artist, and she didn't catch on.

I agree...I mean again...I like the girl...but you can't say she wasn't promoted....she was definitely promoted. She was on soundtracks....she toured the country with Nick Lachey....I saw her open a radio show for Ashley Parker Angel...she had a video that was on Vh1 and MTV....she was promoted more then a lot of other artists that have been signed and dropped from labels...at least she was able to release her album and tour behind it.

Maybe now she'll have better material...but still I just don't believe that this is her only option to get back into the limelight.

She doesn't have to be a superstar on radio just to satisfy her passion for music. To me, that sounds more like a passion for fame.

Yep, and that's what it call comes down to. She wants attention. She wants everyone to know who she is. Music just wasn't enough for her.

What do you mean "it's cute?" Don't get so bent out of shape, Stacy. It's not some big conspiracy, LoL. The last time I posted a full article from another site, I was warned that we can post partial text, but not the entire article. So that's what I did.

Even so, I don't particularly care how genius it is for the producers to add someone "controversial" to the mix. Allowing a convicted rapist to participate in the competition would be "controversial" as well -- doesn't mean I'd like it.

It's my personal opinion that having people with with albums/music videos/etc. participate in the competition makes it less exciting and that's a big part of why the ratings have dropped in recent seasons. JMO.

I still wish the best for Joanna though. Like I said, I have nothing personal against her.

In a lot of the articles covering this story, they're giving her way too much credit in Britney covering one of "her" songs. Joanna didn't write it, so it's hardly 'her' song. I'm sure Britney covered it just because it was "Joanna's song," at least, that's what the articles lead you to believe.

^^ And incase you were wondering, in saying about the whole Britney thing, it was more a shot to the media for not getting their facts straight on the subject. They don't mind saying she was so important that Britney covered her song, but they didn't point out that Joanna sang the song, but didn't write it. That would be like saying Britney is so great because she covered a TLC song 'Baby One More Time' and not giving the whole truth, which is that TLC passed on the song, and it fell into Britney's posession. lol
I distrust the media so much now, thanks to the election. And this helps.

oh yeah I totally forgot about that "First Year" show...I remember watching it for her.

and tonight an Osmond auditions...geez

Loved Danny Gokey and Anoop tonight!

Lil Rounds version of "I Will Always Love You" was overrated, IMO. Definitely most overrated of the night, even though I loved her audition.

I can't believe Bikini Skank got through. Gag me!

Thank God they finally told Von Smith to tone it down. He has such a great voice, but he abuses his vocals to the point of annoyance. Let's hope he takes their advice, because he can sing beautifully when he doesn't push it so far.

Tomorrow's episode looks like it's gonna be full of drama.

I was thrilled I didn't have to hear Joanna and would have been better off not hearing Von's overdramatic embarrassment of an awful broadway wannabe audition. OK, yeah, none of that went together, but if either of them make it through, I'm SO done with this season!!!
