So this small town Southern boy is hitting the Big Apple. Hopefully

I'm a finalist for an internship in NYC starting in January, which means of course I'll be moving up there. I have no clue about New York, at all. So what's the best places in the city to do stuff. Hell, even to live without an astronomical rent? I figured I'd come here, because if I do get the chance at moving, I wanna let the full me come out like I've never been able to do. So any suggestions on anything would be great, I'm open to anything :)

Rent's a good question - exactly how much does it cost to live somewhere half decent there?

it's very expensive to live somewhere I would consider half way decent but there are lot's of "up and coming" areas that people seem to like--I wouldn't live there, but many people seem to like it. My friend is renting a very small one bedroom (400 sq ft) and is paying 2400---and he considers it a deal. Do research on Craigs List and you can get an idea of neighborhood prices. Or PM me Ariesstar89 you need any more info.

[-X "seem to." You make it sound like people are deluding themselves and crying themselves to sleep because they can't live in the city. :p

To the op: I would check out listings Astoria, Williamsburg, Park Slope, Fort Greene on Craigslist first. Those all have tons of bars, access to trains at process that aren't ridiculously as pricey as most of Manhattan.

If you like the prices you see with those listings, check 'em out. If think you can afford more and you want to take on "The City," we can start recommending more neighborhoods in Manhattan. If you want to pay less, I can direct you to some awesome "up and coming" neighborhoods where you can get a good deal of restaurants and bars without it being as expensive as the aforementioned areas.

I think an important factor here also is interest. What are your interests? Every neighborhood in NYC is its own world. Some people think "Manhattan!!!!!!" and act like the whole borough is gold, but while one neighborhood might be rich in art and culture, another can be dreadfully boring in those areas, but maybe better in others. That's stands for most of the boroughs actually. I think NY is best done when you live in a neighborhood (not just a borough, but a neighborhood) that completely fits your tastes.

^well that's what I mean by seem to enjoy---it fits there taste--but many other's live where they can afford---and many have to delude themselves into liking it because they want to be in NYC----because I can't tell you how many times acquaintances have said to me--"I live in "such a such place"--it's okay but I'd rather live in "fill in the blank". It's just the way it is in expensive cities. That is not to say Brooklyn, etc.. isn't fab ----but it's not Manhattan:D (lol--just had to add that) But I like my location because I drive out of the city a lot---live two blocks from West Side Highway--- and where I go I can't imagine adding a half hour of time on my trip by living in some other neighborhood---like Brooklyn.:p

my condolences to you

NYC?

You must be one of those leather boys... into punishment and whatnot.

When you talk about rentals, I'm guessing you're talking per month (not per week like we quote over here)?

Hmm, well internships don't usually pay much, some of them even pay literally nothing. I don't know how those people get by in New York. Maybe their parents are supporting them? In any case I think you need to be pretty objective about the money before you decide whether to take it.

Hey, I'm from Alabama as well, but living in New York now. Shoot me a PM if you want to talk.

I just find it funny when people choose a neighborhood because it's in "MANHATTAN!" and it happens to be a neighborhood where there's nothing to do, but they're "close to" everything. I'd rather be in a neighborhood that has everything, regardless of the borough.

Couldn't agree more.

So many newcomers think New York is just Manhattan and will either break their (parent's) bank trying to pay for rent in an area that's close to "everything" or wind up waaay up in a not so safe area like Washington Heights or Inwood- just because they want a Manhattan address.

I'd look into roommates and subletting on Craigslist. I was able to find an amazing sublet in one of the best areas of Queens. I'd also check out Hoboken in Jersey as that's a cool, relatively gay friendly area with a lot's of young people.

Though, as Naughty said Brooklyn has the best, all around neighborhoods for young newcomers that are still somewhat affordable. You should walk around different neighborhoods in the city that interest you and see if they are a good fit.

Hope that helps.

Brooklyn and Queens suck. I would never move from Manhattan to there.

Honestly, I would check out the bronx(I live here) A lot of people are fleeing from mahattan to the bronx.

I'm in the Bronx right now! I go to college and work here. I wouldn't really want to live in most areas of the Bronx though. There are some nice ones, however.
