Did he charge extra for it?

If he did it only to help him stay in character, that's his to deal with, and for no one else to know or care about, really. Hardly worth a mention, and likely quite common.

In a radio station, it might be beneficial for the interviewers, but over the phone? Who'd know?

That's more than churlish. Being a successful performance artist is hardly something to "deal with" as the successful performer.

And, suggesting someone shouldn't mention a celebrity's quirks or distinctive traits is seemingly boorish on a forum. Lots of famous people have done things that others find odd and noteworthy at the same time. If you didn't find it interesting, what is the point of scolding someone for having found it interesting and posting it. Did it waste your time?

The backstage goings on of performers has long been popular among fans, dating back for centruries. The same easily holds true for broadcasters, including radio and online bloggers.

By definition, successful performers have something that makes them capture the attention of a large number of fans.

For my own part, I would surmise Humphries respected the character, and vivified her as a form of respect, a way to avoid a cynical pretense of an actor playing a woman. Dame Edna was far more than some voice on a mike. I say that because, when I write fiction, I see characters doing things that I didn't anticipate, and I find that fascinating. They are just characters, but they begin to interact and react like they were alive.

You would surmise?

I never asked anyone for guesses. I asked for a clarification, and have yet to receive one.

Simply saying that someone HAD to do something is vague. So, I asked the poster directly.

And, I'll ask him again, was being in full costume for phone interviews demanded in a contract, or did the performer only claim to FEEL that it was necessary? -for whatever reason.

In the United States, using disinterested to mean uninterested has become quite common, I'm afraid. And everyone understands what's meant, so fighting against it is probably futile.

Also note that an "American possum" - which is actually an opossum - is a different animal to an Australian possum, which is not an opossum.
