I'm surprised that I don't see a thread about the last election in the US. Im wondering what the opinions are about what is going to happen to us in the future. Rick and I have a house in Florida and a summer house in NY. I'm not sure our marriage is going to survive in Florida as the state and country have move so far right. I'm thinking we need to get out asap. Am I Being paranoid? I've heard the statements from the new king and know our governors history toward gays. What do the fellas and fellettes think?

My partner's partner is making me get a passport on the off chance but so far we're staying right where we are, which is Philly. I'd be more worried if I were in the boonies here.

This will be a CE&P thread, where there actually is ongoing discussion about the potential threat to Obergefell and other chilling implications of the Project 2025 agenda which has now been openly cited as the transition plan.

You should read that.

Hawaii just enshrined homo marriage in their constitution. Why would this be even necessary in 2024 under federal protection? It should tell you something.

California is holding emergency sessions in anticipation of the battering ram that TrumpCo. will use against the state under Project 2025.

If you haven't been paying attention to the real right wing Dominionist agenda that Trump is championing, you might want to look at some contingency plans.

If the US is lucky, Trump will die early in his term and Vance is too unlikeable and witless to enact or enforce a lot of the agenda to deconstruct the federal government and unleash the type of chaos that Trump is capable of.

Much of the worst social legislation will serve as a smokescreen for the work to create an autocracy openly controlled by oligarchs. Some of the most hurtful will likely be held until after the 2026 midterms.

All LGBT and particularly T people should prepare themselves to be used very badly by the right wing politicians.

Yeah. I’m thinking we at the very least head the NY house. They have a democratic governor who will hopefully sign on to what California, Illinois and Hawaii have done. This is going to be a shit show.

Sorry about not looking in the political thread. I always come to hot topics.

I should note that while Project 2025 does not directly call for the overturn of Obergefell, it does talk about homo marriage being treated as lesser than 'traditional' marriage.

The reason that the executive agenda does not have to tackle Obergefell is because TrumpCo. will have a completely compliant SC conservative Catholic majority to do the work. We all know that cases will rocket through the courts of TrumpCo. appointed far right wing federal judges and that the Roberts court will have to hear a case at some point.

It is worth noting that Project 2025 advocates “deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (‘SOGI’), diversity, equity, and inclusion (‘DEI’), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term that has been used to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists.”

This could erase LGBTQ people from federal protections entirely, basically writing us all out of existence.

Also good to remember that Project 2025 is targeting porn...but it is a good bet that it is targeting really only gay porn sites in the US.

It leads the US back into a host of First Amendment cases and likely a small group of Dominionists to define 'porn'.
And it isn't just banning it. it is criminalizing it, including targetting teachers, librarians and anyonbe else distributing material deemed 'pornography'.

Am I Being paranoid?
No, you are far beyond that.

Virtually every country where a left-wing government introduced same-sex marriage has since had right-wing governments that didn't remove any rights for lesbians and gays, or for women in general. You can look from Belgium to Argentina, from Sweden to South Africa and from Australia to Spain.

In other countries it was even right-wing governments that introduced gay marriage after the left had dragged their feet. All the American right has done so far is make abortion the remit of the states rather than the federal government - in line with what RBG herself believed. You'll be fine.

Bullshit.

Again, just made up stuff.

If we want a really good example of the retraction of LGBTQ rights, look to the Kremlin. That is what America's far right is modelling their thinking on.

The only thing standing in the way of some of this is Peter Thiel...JD Vance's owner. But even Thiel can hardly be trusted not to sell out the homos.

I keep saying, it will be porn sites first. When they get away with it, anything with a gay outreach will be next. That will include sites like Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG, GLAAD etc, which will be called something like "promoting an immoral lifestyle" and thus is "porn". Wait and see. I hope I'm wrong, but these people want to stamp everything "gay".

oh, good to know.

Probably a safe bet.

You can always pop down to Key West for a visit if things get too cold in NY.

South Africa doesn't fit in there at all.

It was all bullshit.

Neither does Sweden, Belgium, Argentina, Australia or Spain.

There is a world of difference between a Conservative government being elected in any liberal democracy and a hard swing to far right wing autocracies.

For real examples...look to countries like Turkey where LGBTQ citizens have seen protections and rights eroded over the last decade.

In 2013, ILGA-Europe ranked Turkey 39th out of 49 countries regarding the protection of LGBTQ rights, but in 2024, it fell to the 47th position, followed only by Azerbaijan and Russia.

To be honest, the post rings incredibly false...more like something that would come from a Kremlin troll farm.

If you want a look into a possible future...you can always look at Orban's (Kremlin's) Hungary.

While pro-russian reactionary right wing regimes have tried to introduce repressive LGBTQ laws, they are sharply constained by the laws of the EU.

Even then however, there are concerns.

The US will have no such constraints or guardrails. If Trump, who loves Orban decides to push for a federal repressive regime in order to pander to the christo-fascists, there is no federation that will stop that. Look at how inneffective the UN is in this area.

we're both anxious and disappointed. Not sure if we should/can leave the US.. we have friends in Italy and Sicily but we can't just go live there.....

No. You shouldn't have to leave the country. I suspect that even Congress and the SC would have a hard time enacting a totally anti-lgbtq agenda...it may be states' rights that saves the republic as long as key states are held by liberals.

But people will need to be more watchful and considerate about which states they want to live in, and spend money in if the US returns things like equal marriage etc. to the states.

The US will probably end up looking a lot more like the US of the Nixon era...but unfortunately without the demographic strength of the generation that pushed back hard and helped win so many critical rights for blacks, women and homosexuals.

I predict that the US will become a nation of 'go along to get along'...or 'don't ask, don't tell'...versus an all out assault.

Hot Topics isn't really hot any longer. It's closely watched to keep it down to old ladies on the front porch gossipping.
