Post something just for the heck of it

40 years old and only just now got wind of it.

I'll add this.

My roommate turned me on to a real hoot-of-a-song Tuesday afternoon. Comes from 1994, but I don't remember ever hearing it before (and I listened to about ten more of their cuts on YouTube, and all those were good, too...)

The worst thing...is not energy depletion, economic collapse, conventional war, or the expansion of totalitarian governments. As terrible as these catastrophes would be for us, they can be repaired in a few generations. The one process now going on that will take millions of years to correct is loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats. This is the folly our descendants are least likely to forgive us.--E.O. Wilson

What a stupid thing to say...

Those "catastrophes" are totally overcome only after centuries, not a mere "few generations", especially when they are compounded... and for a much shorter time than it ever took to get there. The loss of genetic and species diversity, on the other hand, as terrible as it may seem, is not "terrible" for anyone, nor for the human, nor for the species themselves: as long as there is life, there will be diversity, more or less, never exactly the same you knew at one given point of evolution, and the "folly" of man is acting just like another blind for of nature. "Design" is only a prudish moral distinction to be made on what acts the same as a "fortuitous" geological or astronomical Armageddon.

Really funny how some "naturalists" have a view of human society taken more as a natural fact, as if it were a blind force driven by mere inertia, taking for granted what makes and destroys societies, and then view nature more according to the feeling they keep in their own minds about it.
