The worst part if that common perversion of taking human relationships as a give-and-take calculation, that you must give in order to receive, that you must invest in order to receive a reward. Then they would have the nerve to speak of "cold and calculating" personalities, preach selflessness...
People ARE not considered friends, they are more like clients whose interest in you you must cultivate... of course, you speak of the abstract friendship, which makes it seem more 'spiritual' and deep...

Then the same people who say that, would have the nerve to speak of others' "cold and calculating" personalities, while they preach of the glory and moral superiority of selflessness etc...
For those of the "give-and-you'll-receive" morals, people ARE not considered friends, they are more like clients whose interest in you you must cultivate... of course, you speak of it under the sham abstract light of friendship, which makes it seem all more 'spiritual' and deep blahblah-blahblahblah...
I guess such tricky morals help the Calvinist-ish Anglos build the world they contrived...
