Here is a lawn ornament of an anatomically correct young man riding a dolphin that I saw walking around my neighborhood. I took the picture because you always see lots of naked girls and young women statues in people's yards, but not many of naked men. You see part of a cat at the edge of the picture, she was very friendly with me and had me pet her.

Cruising was/is an incredibly complicated movie in its making and release.

I also was a young homo at the time and largely just ignored it...in fact didn't watch it until the 90's.

I then found it disturbing at all the levels that the people who hated it did...and yet I kind of appreciate the young man's perspective of a film he didn't fully understand the
context for.

and it brought back thoughts of this movie.

I won't watch it again because I no longer want to be haunted by discomfort trying relive that era.

But Cruising is one of the reasons I am looking forward to the upcoming Pillion release. To see the evolution of the leather biker community and a more nuanced characters involved in the scene years after we have left the era when cruising was actually a necessity for many homo men in order to have sexual contact.

I think that Pacino made a huge mistake in choosing this role. He just simply didn't have the sexual credibility required and didn't seem as though he was invested in the role...more like coasting on a persona from previous filmwork.

Years later, in Toronto, there was a serial killer and the police ignored the pleas from the bar community that guys were just disappearing and it brought back thoughts of this movie.

I won't watch it again because I no longer want to be haunted by discomfort trying relive that era.

I found the movie utterly fascinating. Friedkin did say this was a movie about a community (leather) within a community (gay) that no one who lived it at that time disputed how it was depicted in the movie.

It made an impression on me because gays weren't sissies or weak; they were to be feared. There was a power in that, the power to be a villain instead of the victim for once on screen.

Before "Cruising" was the movie "The Boys in the Band." A group of self-hating fags that were horrific representations of gay men, but no one seemed to have had a problem with THAT depiction of homosexual men in a film being sad jokes to pity made for the straight masses.

What most people didn't know then, and few know even now, was that it was based on a true story.

Body parts of murdered gay leather men were being washed up on the NY shores in the late 70s, early 80s. So the NYPD got the idea to get a police officer who matched the description of the victims to pose as a gay leather man (he was straight), they rented him an apartment in the Meatpacking District, and told him to act as bait in leather bars (he also had the learn the "Hankey Code") to lure out the killer with only his superiors in the Police department knowing about his recruitment into this operation.

They got a lot right. From the little song being sung by the killer, witnesses said the heard in the Police reports, the two Police officers who were forcing blowjobs from leather men in their squad car, to the fact the killer was never caught like in the film. The real officer this was based on, Randy Jurgensen, was a consultant on the film and even had a cameo in it as a detective.
