Potential

Wow, Michael, I had just begun to post to the last chapter when I saw you had posted another portion. I really like how the story is developing. I am sure it will take some time for Alex to begin to trust Paul. But the level of development is excellent.
We are now getting a better glimpse of what Alex is truly like physically. It would be nice to imagine what Paul looks like as well. I eagerly look forward to the continuance of this remarkable story.

Late that night Paul braved the dark alley turning up at Alex’s door, then knocked tentatively unsure how his reception would be. Even in the poor light of Alex’s room the obvious turmoil in Paul’s countenance could not be concealed even from Alex. Paul’s soft brown eyes were trying to tell the story his heart wanted to say. Alex sat down opposite him at his table. The words wouldn’t come.

“Can we talk about us?” ventured Paul.

“Us?” answered Alex “… what about us?”

“I um …” ….. “I … think that … I well …” stumbled Paul.

“What is it man, what are you trying to say?” asked Alex.

His resolve crumbling Paul was unable to say what he really meant, then added “I er did I make a mistake today? … I um … just wanted to be your friend.”

Alex drew a breath, thought for a moment and carefully replied “Friend? We’re different … I can’t be part of all that … your life … you’re a rich boy … I’m, well compared to you I’m nothing…”

“You’re not nothing” Paul spat in desperation. “Look at me … I’m here … pleading … with you to take me as I am.”

Alex stared into the emotional face opposite his own and saw the pain behind the eyes. He did not understand where that pain was coming from but knew enough to be careful of his response. He did like Paul, but today highlighted the gulf between their circumstances. “I’ve been alone so long … I don’t think I make much of a friend ... but yeah … we get on well when we’re here … today was just, well, it made me realise how different we are … but if it’s what you want yeah I’ll try harder.” On that point Alex got them a couple of cokes.

Paul took the small offering as a sign and settled into some forgettable mundane conversation. At the back of his mind was the nagging thought that what he really wanted to hear from Alex was that he wanted Paul too.

BTW your very welcome. You have got me on the edge. Alex is like a turtle in his shell and he just won't come out. He may be a tough cookie to crumble.
Thanks,
Ken

OMG, haven't we all gone through that "lonely and frightening" time that Paul just faced. So unsure of what to say or how far to push the envelope. Michael, this is very true to life and your writing has the ability to bring to life. Even though the chapters are short in length, they pack all that needs to be said. Well done.

Craiger

Michael Thank you, you write very well, so sensitively & with great understanding
of the very different situations that the boys are in
Please keep writing !!

That Paul was in love with Alex was an understatement. He was madly in love. Did Alex have any idea he wondered? Every time Paul came close to revealing his love he became tongue-tied and lost for the correct words, so he continued to bear his love in silence preferring to put up with the exquisite ache inside him rather than risk losing the one he loved. What if Alex rejected him? No, thought Paul, that would be too much to bear and yet Paul was used to getting his own way and was nothing if not persistent. His mind worked overtime conjuring up inventive ways to be with Alex without transgressing too much on his fierce independence. After all he figured it’s better to be with him than miss out altogether.

Hit with a new brainwave in which he could have some time with Alex without infringing on his convictions Paul cajoled Alex into an overnight camping trip to the lake the following weekend. Alex as usual seemed to be hesitant at first then gave in to the insistent badgering.

The two found a great place to camp close to the edge of the lake near a small boat jetty that jutted out into the deep dark waters. Clean, clear air and a breathtaking back drop invigorated the two as they worked to set up their camp. True to form Paul had an arsenal of equipment more akin to a permanent dwelling but at least was able to make light of his “over the top” camp site gadgets uttering infectious comments and numerous chuckles as he worked.

It was warm as the sun rose overhead. Stripped from the waist up and wearing only trunks they came back to their camp having explored the stunning inlet and forest around them. They placed a couple of towels side by side on the soft grass and lay on their backs staring up into the infinite blue above them. The warm sun caressed their young bodies inviting them to lapse into a dreamy doze. Paul’s proximity to the half naked Alex fuelled his longing. He opened his eyelids just wide enough to see Alex’s body to his right. A slight movement and Paul quickly closed his eyes but when Alex’s left arm innocently brushed against his right it set off sparks igniting his whole body. Paul was definitely not asleep. His senses were going into overdrive from the delicious sensation of touching the love of his life. True it was just a forearm arm resting against his own but that was enough to push beyond his controllable limits and surged his body towards a sensory overload.

Despite his eyes firmly closed Paul suddenly noticed the heightened sounds around him, the insects buzzing, the warmth of the sun’s rays on his skin, his regular breathing and his thudding pulse raging around his body. He listened intently and tuned into Alex’s breathing guessing he was asleep. Boldly but guised as a sleeping man he changed positions to get more comfortable. Paul rolled onto his right side closer to Alex than he should have been and much closer than if he was truly controlling his actions. His left hand swept across Alex’s chest resting midway with his left little finger lining the edge of Alex’s right nipple. Paul heard Alex’s short gasp and sensed his friend’s body tense as it froze into position. He could feel the beating of Alex’s heart that combined with his own rhythm to create a mesmerising beat any musician would be proud to create. The feel of Alex’s smooth skin, the strength of his muscle and the heat of his body kept Paul’s senses simmering. Don’t move he kept telling himself … don’t give yourself away … enjoy what you have … but … he couldn’t … and Paul wriggled slightly adjusting his position and slid his hand down across Alex’s abdominals well below his navel. He heard Alex’s sharp intake of breath and felt the fluttering of Alex’s lower tummy beneath his hand as it came to rest with his finger tips a fraction of an inch away from the pubic region. The tension in Paul’s body created a gentle humming in his ears.

If he was asleep then Alex was definitely not asleep now. He had kept very still when Paul had placed a hand on his chest Alex pretended he was unaware and assumed Paul was sleeping. Now that the tips of Paul’s fingers were almost under the top band of his trunks it was difficult to ignore. Adrenalin flooded his veins and the primal instinct to fight or flight reached a crescendo. He sat up abruptly pacing quickly down to the water’s edge and out along the narrow jetty towards its furthest point.

Paul was embarrassed, ashamed and aghast at his transgression. He instantly stood up calling to the retreating figure, imploring him to come back then raced after Alex out towards the jetty. Paul tried to stay calm and reasonable despite the situation he had created “please Alex … I’m so sorry … don’t…” but before he could finish…

Alex turned blindly catching his foot on a boat mooring rope piled on the jetty, he lost his balance and flayed his arms wildly through the air as he twisted head first into the deep water sending white spray spinning through the air. The knotted rope was fast around his ankle and his left foot was pulled taut by the rope above the surface of the water as his head sank deep and his arms thrashed uselessly in sheer panic. Alex could not swim and was desperately fighting to survive.

“Nooooo” screamed a shocked Paul. He sprinted to the end of the jetty, pulled the rope over its mooring cleat and threw himself into the turbulent water. He dived down into the dark water frantically searching everywhere. He felt rather than saw a limb, doubled back and grabbed it firmly heaving Alex towards the surface. Both heads came up simultaneously gasping for air, Alex’s panic forcing him to use all his strength as he climbed on Paul’s back to escape the water’s deep. Paul was pushed under by the weight and barely able to move under Alex’s vice like grip.

Paul kicked hard raising his head once more screaming “Alex … just float … trust me … gulp ... Alex … you need to be calm … trust me” before gulping another mouthfull of water and being forced under again.

Wow! Dangerous situation!! I hope Alex will listen to Paul & calm down before they both get into difficulties.
Excellent. Thanks Michael
More please
Harry

Wow, Michael. The tension in that chapter was immense. Paul has tested the waters, so to speak, not only in his desire for Alex, but also in the attempt to save him. You have again built up their feelings to a crescendo and left us with a real cliffhanger. Good work.

Craiger

Yeah! You left us with an intense cliffhanger. Maybe this will help to break Alex's shell. Can't wait to find out. Excellent writing.

Ken

thanks guys i appreciate the encouragement.. i kinda liked writing that last one ... wonder what is planned next?
are u sure u really want this??????????

By some oversight, I seem to have never responded in this thread before. Which is a pity, because this is a very well-written story and the characterisations of Paul and Alex are well thought out.

So please do continue with this story, whatever way you want to. Just don't leave us hanging on the end of a rope (like Alex!)

I look forward to further instalments. Thank you for an excellent tale and keep up the good work ;)

* * * * * *

Paul deliberately pulled Alex down deeper below the surface, yanked his arm forward then twisted forcing Alex in front of him with his arm twisted high behind his back. He kicked hard to the surface his body behind Alex, his grip firm on the twisted arm and his left hand across Alex’s chest locking him in position to prevent him drowning them both. Alex struggled as Paul held him strongly once again entreating him “Alex it’s ok I’ve got you … relax … just relax … trust me.”

The sun came out from behind a cloud as Alex ceased to struggle.

Sensing the change Paul kept a good hold but relaxed his tense muscles shifting Alex onto his left and commenced to swim side stroke towards the shore. Alex tightened slightly a couple of times but allowed Paul the freedom he required to get them to the edge of the lake safely. It was slow progress but Paul was seriously determined. Once close enough to stand Paul hauled Alex to his feet pulling Alex’s left arm across the back of his head holding onto it with his left and wrapped his own right arm around Alex’s back supporting his chest. The two staggered towards the bank, out of the water and teetered across the grass … barely able to stand, Paul lowered Alex onto the grass where he sat curled over his head lowered between his knees sucking in gasps of air. Paul struggled across to grab a blanket, came back, thumped down next to Alex and pulled the blanket around their shoulders, his own chest heaving. They stayed exactly like that … Paul holding them together … wound up in the blanket … for quite a while.

As their strength returned Alex was the first to break the heavy silence. “Paul I … I’m so sorry” he began.

“It’s ok Alex” countered Paul, “It’s my fault … I shouldn’t have done it … I shouldn’t have … I couldn’t stop myself … I just … I just … damn … I can’t say it.”

A still silence followed this time it was Paul who ventured “It’s no good like this Alex I have to say the truth … I … well, I love you Alex. I’ve loved you from the moment we first met and you saved me.”

Alex didn’t move. Paul’s right arm was still draped around his shoulders holding him, comforting him.

Believing Alex’s silence to be rejection Paul removed his arm and his physical contact from Alex.

The potential loss loomed in Alex’s head “No don’t” he squeaked “don’t move, stay with me” and at that Paul tenderly put his arm around Alex drawing him close and safe in his arms.

They remained like that for another 10 minutes before Alex started to speak. “When my mother died there was no one … it was just me and no one wanted me … I … my father he… he beat me, over and over again and I ran away so many times … I learned to make it on my own.” At first his words were slow and painful, disjointed but beautifully poignant. It was a trickle that became a flood as he reached deep inside pouring out past hurts, despicable atrocities and years of neglect. Paul’s eyes moistened as he held Alex close and absorbed so much of the fear and pain behind those blue eyes. “No one loved me … who would I love anyway?” Alex continued “You deserve more … not me … you, you … you need someone who can … can love.” Paul was almost sobbing by the time Alex had finished. The two of them turned their heads gazing into the depths of each other’s watery eyes as their souls searched for meaning through the windows of their very being.

Michael,

What a tender chapter. So full of emotion from both Alex and Paul. The trust is finally beginning to come to past. Very suiting for the title "Potential". I really do feel a connection with your characters and the emotional roller-coaster they both are witnessing. Well done.

Craiger

hi all... sorry to take so long to write
would it surprise you to know that i have written four different versions of what happens next ... i scrapped the lot and have decided to have this fifth effort instead. Maybe there was a let down after the raw tension and tenderness of the last couple of episodes!!!!! I think that my own insecurity as a writer, never quite sure what people think despite the affirmation i have gratefully received, comes back to haunt me. Maybe when i write about Alex's insecurity I am talking of my own - mind you I am a father with 6 kids in my real life... so what does that tell you???
Enough of the self doubt .... read on and lets get through this together.

* * * * * *

The moon rose on the eastern horizon well before the sun had set in the west. Its full face smiled enigmatically as it rose preparing to cast delicate light on a dancing lake and the pair huddling closely on the grassy bank. Paul was as certain as can be. He was sure he had found the love of his life. He gazed into the deep blue eyes opposite him finding the insecurity he knew would be there. Alex was able to intimidate any bully, he had seen death, he could fight, was street wise and very tough however, beneath all that he was emotionally stripped of all dignity. He saw something else that gave him hope; it was a deep longing for that which had been missing in his life, he yearned for someone to care. Paul realised the extent to which he was the strong one and that he was the one who would reach behind Alex’s mask. He understood why Alex was so frightened and unable to commit, why Alex could not pass the barrier that said he wasn’t good enough! Not good enough for Paul? Not good enough for anyone? Paul also remembered the sensations he felt from Alex’s body when he had touched him. That was real and in his heightened awareness at the time knew the meaning of Alex’s response. Paul drew encouragement from the day’s unexpected turn, however, he was acutely aware that patience was more likely to deliver the outcome he truly desired. Should he go with his primal instinct for instant sexual gratification? Alex was like putty right now and would do anything he asked. Should he wait?

When Alex gazed into Paul’s warm, liquid, brown eyes he saw comfort, he saw love and he saw the unquenchable thirst of desire. Paul had done more for him than anyone since his mother died and today had risked his own life. No one had ever done anything remotely akin to that for him before and Paul’s eyes implored him to trust him, to love him. Surely he owed Paul that much. He knew or thought he knew what Paul wanted! There was little point in delaying the inevitable, it would be a first for him and right now seemed the appropriate time.

Paul broke the silence. “Alex” he said, “things have changed today, between us I mean. Do you trust me and know I won’t hurt you?”

Alex’s customary defences were non existent as his eyes looked innocently into Paul’s own eyes and honestly replied “I do trust you.”

Paul then stood up directly in front of Alex. He drew himself up to his full height of 6’ as his eyes glittered reflecting the evening sun and he slowly moved his hand down to the top band of his trunks where he undid the clasp. Ping, the sound seemed to reverberate across the lake in the magic of the moment. Paul then tugged very lightly on both sides of his trunks as they dropped effortlessly to his ankles. Paul stood there in his green boxer shorts the fabric straining against the power of his erection. “You know what I want and what I will do” Paul whispered. “It’s up to you!”

A sharp intake of breath followed “I’ve never … um … done, well you know, … never been with anyone before” stuttered Alex.

Paul grinned “nor have I he chuckled but I know what to do!” Paul continued flashing his pearly smile.

Alex stood up opposite Paul. His 6’2” frame making him a little taller. He held Paul’s golden gaze with his own piercing blue eyes. Paul reached down to his own green boxer shorts undoing the top button slowly. He held the silky cloth for a few seconds before dropping it to the ground and stepping out of his clothes naked. Alex cast his eyes over Paul’s body. Paul’s skin was tanned and light brown where it should be, his naturally smooth skin was soft over developing muscles as he was starting to fill out towards his man shape. Alex looked down for the first time at Alex’s private parts but had little time to dwell on his thoughts as Paul reached out to place his right hand on Alex’s chest.

Paul used his finger tips to trace the outline of Alex’s muscles. He slowly moved his hands down across the flat six pack to the top of Alex’s trunks. He very slowly undid the knotted cord holding the trunks up and allowed them to free fall to the ground. Alex was completely naked and moved his hands across out of embarrassment to cover himself. Nothing could stop Paul’s intent he held Alex’s arms wide away from his body and feasted on the stunning sight of his friend. What pure beauty he had in front of him. His eyes had darted instantly to Alex’s private parts sending signals of anticipation to his brain. Alex had the body of a Greek statue, he had definition and symmetry, perfection of the body but unlike the classical sculptures this moving statue was very well endowed. Wow he was big, even now it had to be over 7” and it was still close to soft and behind that his balls were hanging nice and low down. His dark bush rose above his long dick on the end of which was an obvious thick head hidden beneath an uncut foreskin.

Paul’s mouth salivated as he stood facing the naked Alex. The two of them stepped towards each other and stood bodies touching and eyes interlocked uniting their destinies and preparing to celebrate their union.

“I’ve never met anyone like you” Paul crooned … “you’re so strong physically and so beautiful, yet you aren’t even aware of it. I trust my heart and it tells me you’re the one I love. Listen to your own heart … tell me what it says.”

It could be a bumpy road but there is a start for love. Very emotional and touching story. Want to read more.
Thanks,
Ken

Michael,
I'm not sure what you wrote in the first drafts of this chapter, but this was wonderful and well written. The trust is there for now and hopefully after whatever encounter is yet to happen. I look forward to knowing what is in Alex's heart.
