Power Outages?

Is losing power common?

It is where I live
Out in the backwoods
Usually an hour at a time, once or twice a week, hopefully through the night
We've only had the one, over 36hours, for which the supplier paid everyone compensation of $200.00 for freezer food losses - and general inconvenience.
No lighting, no television, no CD, you can't even read by candlelight.
No water - as it comes from the tanks via electric pump.
This also means one toilet flush - till the electricity's flowing again.

We always say if this happened in a major city, the Energy Minister's head would be rolling, along with a few deserving others.

Is it because strong winds or other bad weather knock down power lines?
The weather in Victoria is a bit crazy, after all.

How many power outages, over 2 hours, have you dealt with?

Is losing power common?

I suppose every 3 or 4 months we lose power for a couple of hours. I five hour outage would be unusual. Our major outages are due to wind storms and ice storms on the rural power poles that feed our City. And if it is muddy or icy/snow drifts it takes a while for crews to get to the damage. But our city is prepared. We have a fully operational power plant that sits idle year around because it is cheaper for the City to purchase power from large power plants than to produce our own using mostly diesel. Therefore during a city-wide outage our plant can be started up in about 30 minutes.
